The 2007 title holder from the BCR Open Romania, Gilles Simon battled to get past Spanish clay courter Albert Montanes on Wednesday.
France’s Simon needed just two sets to win comfortably over Montanes. The Frenchman is having the summer of his career. He kicked off the hard court season taking the title in Indianapolis where he beat Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov. He went on to advance to the semifinals at the Masters event in Toronto, losing to Nicolas Keifer. Simon comes back on the dirt in Romania to defend his title.
Montanes had difficulty on his own serve. He was broken a single time in each set, but Simon had ten chances in the match. Simon saved all three break points on his own serve. Montanes never really had a chance in this match; he trailed almost the entire way. Simon smacked eight aces in the one hour and thirty-three minute match.
Simon will play fellow frenchman Florent Serra in the quarterfinals.
