Juan Carlos Ferrero upsets Ivo Karlovic in the first round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Monday afternoon. He overcomes 17 Karlovic aces to win in straight sets.
Not even indoor hard courts could give Ivo Karlovic a big enough advantage against Juan Carlos Ferrero. In their only previous encounter, Ferrero eased past Karlovic on clay, but this time the surface was more advantageous for his opponent. It made no difference. Ferrero knocked out Karlovic 6-4, 7-6(4) in the first round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Monday.
Ferrero made an early statement with his always-stellar return game, seizing a quick break of serve in the first set. In any match involving Karlovic, one break is a commanding lead and the Spaniard made it hold up. He saved a break point at 3-2 and another at 5-4 before closing out the opening frame of play.
Set two was more along the lines of a typical Karlovic showdown. The 6'10'' Croat fired 10 aces and took care of all six of his service games despite facing two break points. Ferrero, however, handled his own serve with even greater ease. He won all 23 first-serve points in the second set and did not face a single break point en route to a tiebreaker. Ferrero, known as “The Mosquito,” pounced on the No. 4 seed for a quick 3-0 lead in the decider and that advantage proved to be insurmountable. He closed out the proceedings on his own serve, taking the 'breaker in routine fashion, seven points to four.
Ferrero will face either Ivan Ljubicic or Jurgen Melzer in the second round.
Great all-around display from Ferrero, especially considering he has not played much tennis recently.
Karlovic has to put in more than 66 percent of his first serves when he is losing more than half of his second-serve points.
