No. 11 seed Juan Martin Del Potro rolled on in Melbourne with a straight-set victory over Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro, who spent the 2011 season working his way back from wrist surgery, seems to be back on form. The Argentine outplayed Philipp Kohlschreiber in every aspect of the game.
Del Potro’s big forehand is returning to the devastating form that saw him to the US Open title in 2009, when he beat both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer en route to the crown. Kohlschreiber was left without options as the Argentine blasted away from the baseline.
Kohlschreiber didn’t play badly. The German struck just one more unforced error than winner, but Del Potro played surgical tennis with just 14 errors to 31 winners.
The win sets up a mouth-watering quarterfinal showdown with Roger Federer.
