  • Seeds march on as Djokvoic and Ferrer advance in Melbourne

    1/21/12 3:22 PM | Cheryl Murray
Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer are one step closer to a quarterfinal showdown with straight set victories on Saturday at the Australian Open.

    Novak Djokovic (1) def. Nicolas Mahut 6-0, 6-1, 6-1

A hobbled Nicolas Mahut offered no resistance to top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic in their third round match. Mahut, who lost the now-famous 70-68 Wimbledon fifth set to John Isner, had black strapping on his knee. The Frenchman was obviously hindered by an injury from the first point of the match, with the knee problem severely compromising his movement.

Djokovic spent just 74 minutes on the court in preparation for a round of 16 showdown with the Aussie veteran Lleyton Hewitt, who is healthy for the first time in many months.

    David Ferrer (5) def. Juan Ignacio Chela (27) 7-5, 6-2, 6-1

For exactly a half a set, Juan Ignacio Chela was in control of this match. The Argentine veteran actually took a 4-0 lead in the opening set. Ferrer proceeded to win seven of the next games to secure the first set. The loss of such a commanding lead undid Chela. The Spaniard went on to break Chela five more times in the match. Chela failed to hold serve a single time in the third set; the single game he won came on a break of Ferrer's serve.

The Spaniard will take on Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the round of 16.

I don't think he'll beat Djokovic, but Ferrer rarely goes down without a fight.

Uh, that's not a nice Mahut picture :)).

The one of Delpo that pops up on match reports isn't exactly flattering either. :D

Well Almagro is giving Berdy a battle. This one is as close as it gets. Almagro is playing surprisingly well, much better than I would have thought. Berdy did a nice job of winning that second set tb, but now they are battling in a tight third set.

No kidding, Rafa would rather see Almagro! I expected Berdy to win more easily. But I am not complaining that it's a long match.
