Kei Nishikori advanced to the final eight in Melbourne, having held on to upset 6th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in five sets. The 22-year-old moves on to face two-time runner-up Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.
World No. 26 Kei Nishikori is through to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open following his 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. After splitting the first two sets, Nishikori took a critical 3-1 in the final set. With the fourth-round success, the 22-year-old became the first Japanese player to reach the last eight in the Open Era.
"This is first quarterfinal for me," said Nishikori, who will break into the top 20 by virtue of his effort. "My best result was 2008 US Open round of 16. That was a couple of years ago. And I played well end of last year, and now it's like this. So I feel I'm stepping up.
"It was tough because he was still playing well in the fifth. I was having trouble with making returns. I started getting nervous. I was tired, too. It was tough to finish. But still I was playing aggressive on important points. I was making good serves. So that helped me to get the games."
Nishikori completed the match with 37 winners and six breaks of serve.
He will take on world No. 4 Andy Murray for a place in the semifinals. The Scot passed into the quarterfinals after opponent Mikhail Kukushkin retired.
