16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer was utterly dominant in his quarterfinal showdown against Juan Martin Del Potro.
The Juan Martin Del Potro that was so impressive in his run to the 2009 US Open title was nowhere to be found in the Australian Open quarterfinals.
Roger Federer had a few shaky points at important moments in both the first and second sets, but his overall form far exceeded Del Potro's.
Federer went up a break early in the first set, but Del Potro found his way back to 4-4. This was just a blip on the radar, however. Federer calmly went about the business of securing a second break to take the lead.
The second set looked routine for Federer. The Swiss got an early break and left Del Potro looking a step slow. But an ill-timed double-fault from the world No. 3 while serving for the set gave Del Potro a pair of break points to get back on serve. A fantastic serve and a botched drop-shot erased the opportunity and Federer hit a backhand winner for the two-set lead.
Del Potro continued to look a bit slow in the third set. The Argentine was out-served and out-hit as Federer made his way to a straight-set victory.
Federer's win sets up the dream semifinal against Rafael Nadal.

Great performance from the G.O.A.T.

Yep. I can't tell if I over-estimated DelPo or under-estimated Rog. Maybe a bit of both. I didn't think DelPo would win, but I thought he'd at least get a set.
With the way Roger and Rafa are playing right now, we should be in for a real treat.

Gotta hand it to fed, still poetry in motion.

I'm a bit disappointed with the way Delpo played. Unlike Berdych, he couldn't serve his big serves to get himself out of troubles or to get his opponents into troubles. I've said before and during this AO, that we've to look out for Tsonga, Berdych and Delpo, they may be the ones troubling the top four. As expected, Delpo and Berdych reached the final but Tsonga fell by the way side. Berdych was the least we talked about among the three yet he performed the best among the three. I believe had he faced Fed today, he would be a sterner test than Delpo.

Of course I meant Berdych and Delpo reached the QF and not the final.

Federer was great today from the back of the court and particularly with his forehand, although he threw in some sublime backhands into the mix as well. Whats positive from his point of view is that the backhand shank hasn't creeped into his play although that may ave to do with the lack of spin on Del Potro's performance.
As for Del Potro, this was probably one of the mentally weakest performances I've seen from him. He might not have beaten Fed in this form, but he should have used the play to the Federer backhand a lot more, and not just tried to hammer everything.

I have to admit - Federer was in fine quality today. It's quite amazing how he can still perform like this going into his 30s. In the end his quick movement and ability to strike the ball early- was too much for Delpo - who I expected to put up a stronger performance.
At least we now have the dream semi final that in truth the world wanted to see. I expect though that Rafa will be too much for Roger too handle and will probably see the Swiss lose in four sets.

Anyone else feel that we're in for a disappointment? I mean in terms of quality of tennis. "Fedal" is not what it used to be. Lately it seems that either one is injured or not in form.
That said, I hope I'm wrong and we see quality tennis. :)

Oh, and please change the Delpo picture...that is some horrible hair... ;)
