Feliciano Lopez takes out John Isner in five sets on Friday in Melbourne. Lopez is joined in the fourth round by Tomas Berdych, a straight-set winner over Kevin Anderson.
(18) Feliciano Lopez d. (16) John Isner 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-7(0), 6-1
Isner played his second five-setter in as many matches, but this time he came out on the losing end to Lopez after three hours and 26 minutes in round three of the Australian Open on Friday. Lopez played a stellar all-court match and was the better player in every department except serve, but as usual Isner's serve kept him in it. The 6'9'' American fired 30 aces and just three double-faults while putting in 73 percent of his first serves to Lopez's 56 percent.
Playing solid from the back of the court, Lopez won the first set with two breaks and the third with one break. The 18th-seeded Spaniard lost the second and fourth primarily due to mental lapses. He dropped serve for the only time all day while serving for the second at 5-4 and he disappeared in the fourth-set tiebreaker without winning a single point. Lopez, though, righted the ship with a forehand pass to break for 3-1 in the fifth and from there it was one-way traffic. Next up for the world No. 19 is countryman and world No. 2 Rafael Nadal.
(7) Tomas Berdych d. (30) Kevin Anderson 7-6(5), 7-6(1), 6-1
Berdych booked his spot in the fourth round after taking out Anderson in two hours and 47 minutes on Friday. The Czech struck 14 aces and although he double-faulted six times, he saved all four of the break points he faced to never drop serve. Anderson did well to make it competitive throughout much of the first two sets, both of which lasted more than an hour. The 6'8'' South African thwarted all eight of his opponent's break chances in the two frames, forcing a pair of tiebreakers.
Anderson's upset bid, though, ended with the beginning of the second-set 'breaker. Berdych dominated the decider seven points to one and from there it was all but over. The world No. 7 seized two breaks in the third and never came close to giving either one back despite serving at 31 percent in the final set. Berdych is through to a clash against Nicolas Almagro, who ousted Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets.
