  • Murray, Tsonga cruise into fourth round

    1/22/12 3:46 AM | Ricky Dimon
Andy Murray and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga roll into the fourth round of the Australian Open on Saturday. They defeat Michael Llodra and Frederico Gil, respectively.

    (4) Andy Murray d. Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-2, 6-0

Murray continued to cruise at the Australian Open as he crushed Llodra in one one hour and 49 minutes during third-round action on Saturday night. The world No. 4 turned in a brilliant performance, cracking 48 winners against a mere 11 unforced errors. Llodra actually played well for two sets but got nothing to show for it.

"He play so well from the return," said the Frenchman. "The passing shot today was amazing. I couldn't do anything."

Next up for Murray is unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin, a surprise five-set winner over Gael Monfils.

    (6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-2, 6-2

Tsonga preceded Murray into the fourth round by stomping on Gil earlier in the day. The sixth-ranked Frenchman needed only one hour and 31 minutes to advance and set up a clash against Kei Nishikori.

Gil never managed to break the Tsonga serve, although the Portuguese underdog did have six break chances. The first man from his country to reach the third round of a major, Gil gave as much as he could but simply did not have any firepower with which to hurt Tsonga. He struck only 13 winners to his opponent's 35.

"Today I played well and didn't spend a lot of time on court, and it's good for the rest of the tournament," Tsonga explained. "Anyway, I'm confident."
