Mardy Fish handles Ryan Harrison in straight sets on Saturday in Atlanta. Fish is through to a second consecutive final in the event against friend and fellow American John Isner.
The Atlanta Tennis Championships has a final rematch on its hands, as Mardy Fish rolled over fellow American Ryan Harrison 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday night. Fish needed just one hour and 18 minutes to set up another showdown against John Isner.
Playing in his first ATP semifinal, Harrison never looked comfortable against his heavily-favored compatriot. The 19-year-old dropped serve at 1-1 and could not get back on level teams even though his opponent served at a mere 36 percent in the first set. Fish fought off the only break point he faced, added another break at 4-2, then served out the opening frame of play in routine fashion.
Harrison picked up his game slightly in the second, but it was nowhere near enough to overcome Fish. The world No. 9 seized an immediate break for a 1-0 advantage and that was all he needed. Although Harrison did well to hold the rest of his service games, Fish remained relentless on his own serve. Atlanta's top seed and defending champion lost only five points in his last five service games and wrapped up the proceedings with ease at 5-4.
"It's important to know that he is doing the right things," Fish said of Harrison. "He's still very young. It's a mid-20s to late-20s type game now. But it's also important (for him) to know that he's a long ways away, as well. You can't be satisfied."
Fish put in only 48 percent of his first deliveries, but he won more than 70 percent of both his first and second-serve points. Harrison finished with three aces and two double-faults while managing to save only three of the six break points he faced.
Last season's title match went to a third-set tiebreaker, with Fish prevailing 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) in two hours and 45 minutes. Fish leads the overall head-to-head series 2-1; two have gone the distance to third-set tiebreakers and their other showdown ended 7-5 in the third.
