Before the rains came to spoil play for the day, Victor Hanescu managed a huge upset, taking out hometown favorite Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets.
Wawrinka came out of the blocks tight. His form had been ominous all week. Stephane Bohli, a little known Swiss wildcard nearly upset him in the second round and his quarterfinal match against Guillermo Canas could easily have gone the other way as well. Unlike Wawrinka’s other two opponents, Hanescu was ready and waiting to take advantage of the poor form.
Hanescu served crisply in the first set. He fired six aces and won all but four of the points on his first serve. He converted the single opportunity he had on Wawrinka’s serve and that break was enough to secure the first set 6-3.
Wawrinka played the big points better in the second set. He saved the two break points Hanescu had against him and converted his only break chance. The hometown crowd had some hope for another three set victory from their countryman. Hanescu had different plans. Wawrinka was dreadful on serve in the third set. He gave Hanescu eight looks on his serve, two of which the Romanian was able to take advantage of. Hanescu’s final opponent will be either Guillermo Garcia-Lopez or Igor Andreev, whose match was suspended due to rain.
