Germany's Nicolas Kiefer heads back to clay after some good results on the grass in Halle.
Germany’s Nicolas Kiefer has been on fire recently. A semifinal result in Halle and a quarterfinal in Hamburg marked a complete turn-around from a somewhat disappointing start to the season.
Qualifier Gianluca Naso from Italy offered little resistance in this first round encounter. Kiefer had his serve broken in the first set, but broke Naso twice. Neither man looked particularly sharp serving, but Kiefer was efficient enough to take the set 6-3.
Kiefer played much better in the second set, though his first serve percentage dropped to 42%. Fortunately for the German, he was equally as tough on his second serve as his first. The Italian got no chances on Kiefer’s serve in the set, but was broken twice himself. Naso spends most of his time playing in Challenger and Futures events. As expected, this match was a learning experience for the Italian. Kiefer will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
