Frequent opponents Mathieu and Cilic battle for the sixth time for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Given their history with each other, expectations were high that the Marin Cilic - Paul-Henri Mathieu match would go the distance. This second round match was their sixth meeting in 2008, and not a single of the previous five were straight set affairs. This one, however, was as straight forward as it could be.
The story of the match was Mathieu’s serve and his inability to execute it properly. He served at 40% for the match and gave Cilic ten break point chances. The big Croat converted just two of them (one in each set), but that was all he needed to do to seal up the win.
All three of Mathieu’s unconverted break points on Cilic’s serve came in the first set. He never got a look in the second set. Cilic has now won the last three of their six meetings, though it is his first win on the red clay. Their most recent encounter before this was at Wimbledon where Cilic prevailed in a tight four set encounter.
Cilic will play the tough Russian clay-courter Igor Andreev in the quarterfinals.
