Victor Hanescu put in an impressive showing against the serve of Ivo karlovic on Thursday in Gstaad.
Tiebreaks are nothing new in an Ivo Karlovic match. At 208 cm tall, Karlovic serves from the trees and most often his opponents are unable to get so much as a racquet on the ball on his serve. Likewise, Karlovic is not exactly known for his returning skills. His groundstrokes are stiff and far more often than not, returns end up in the middle of the net.
Clay tends to complicate things for the towering Croat, taking some of the edge off his biggest weapon. He did not seem to have difficulty on Thursday, however. He smacked 28 aces to Hanescu’s 9 and had three match points. His mentality, it seems, was more responsible for the loss than his first serve percentage.
Not surprisingly, there were no breaks of serve in the match. Hanescu is 198 cm himself, and a big server. He is not the ace machine that Karlovic is, but he is significantly better off the ground than the Croat. This match marks the first time that Hanescu managed to save match points and actually win the match. Since there were few rallies, Hanescu should not be overly tired for his quarterfinal match against French qualifier Jeremy Chardy.
