Russia's Igor Andreev battled Marin Cilic for a spot in the semifinal in Gstaad.
Croat Marin Cilic made a match of things through the first set tiebreaker. Igor Andreev, from Russia, is the better clay court player of the two, but Cilic made him sweat in the first set.
Cilic perhaps even played a bit better in the first. He got two chances to break Andreev’s serve, but was denied. The Croat served a tidy seven aces and breezed through his own service games. Andreev didn’t have a single break chance in the first. The problems for Cilic started in the tiebreaker. He went up a mini-break for 3-1, but he could not hold on. Andreev went on to win six of the next seven points and took the set.
The Croat’s level dropped off a bit after losing the first. Andreev saved another couple break points, but this time he managed to make a dent on his opponent’s serve. Cilic’s first serve percentage dipped below 50% and the Russian was able to take advantage of one of the three break point chances he had. Andreev will play surprise opponent Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
