    World No. 6 David Ferrer made a successful star to his Abierto Mexicano title defense, having upended wildcard Santiago Gonzalez in straight sets. The Spaniard is joined in the round of 16 by Carlos Berlocq, who downed 3rd seed Gilles Simon.

    Top seed David Ferrer is through to the round of 16 after taking out hometown wildcard Santiago Gonzalez. The two-time defending champion led 3-1 in both the first and second sets. Ferrer completed the 6-1, 6-2, 65-minute effort with four of seven break points converted.

    He is scheduled to meet Lukasz Kubot in the second round.

    Carlos Berlocq def. (3) Gilles Simon 7-6(5), 6-3

    World No. 44 Carlos Berlocq advanced to the second round, following his straight-sets ousting of 3rd seed Gilles Simon. The Argentine converted five of 11 break points through to a 7-6(5), 6-3 victory in two hours and 31 minutes. Simon struggled with his second serve, having won just 9 of 25 points.

    Berlocq will take on Potito Starace for a place in the quarterfinals. The Italian defeated qualifier Alessandro Giannessi in the first round, 6-2, 7-5.
