Nicolas Almagro defeated David Nalbandian in convincing fashion to take his second title in three tournaments.
Will the real David Nalbandian please stand up? The sometimes genius from Argentina has been on a clay court tear with a win in Buenos Aires last week, and had a path to the finals in Acapulco marked by a string of straight set wins. In Saturday night's final, however, the vicious ground strokes and booming serve of the past fortnight were replaced with tentativeness and a complete inability to get any kind of bead on his opponent's serve.
Nicolas Almagro has been on something of a tear himself. He grabbed the title in Costa Do Sauipe, and made the quarterfinals of Buenos Aires, where he was forced to withdraw with a groin injury against Juan Ignacio Chela. The Spaniard did not make his way through the draw as easily as Nalbandian, but he did not show any signs of fatigue in the match.
The first set was The Almagro Show. Nalbandian was totally outgunned; he was outplayed in just about every facet of the game. Almagro hit more second serves than he did first serves and he still only conceded thirteen points for the set. Almagro never had a break point against his serve and was 2 for 3 on breake opportunities on the Nalbandian serve. Twenty-five minutes after the set began, it was over.
The Argentine settled in a bit more in the second set. Almagro was still firing away on the first serve, but Nalbandian was able to make some inroads on second serves. Neither man managed to break, and as the tie break rolled around, hope began to rise for a possible third set. That hope would prove to be unfounded. Nalbandian went on a mental walkabout again in the tiebreak, and double faulted on Almagro's first match point.
Nicolas Almagro was on fire and he played fantastic clay court tennis.
David Nalbandian's poor play made the match one-sided for the most part.
