    Nikolay Davydenko breezed through his second round match, but Juan Carlos Ferrero was take to 3 sets before prevailing.

    Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Pablo Cuevas 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

    Last year’s finalist Juan Carlos Ferrero had an early round scare against Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas on Wednesday. Cuevas was able to weather Ferrero’s 83% first serve percentage in the opening set to secure a pair of service breaks. The Spaniard was able to earn one back, but Cuevas still took the set.

    The world No. 22 managed to right the ship in the second set. He still faced 5 break points as Cuevas continued to find his range on the Ferrero serve, but he was able to hold off all but one. Fortunately for the Spaniard and his supporters, Cuevas’s serve fell off a bit in the second set and Ferrero was able to send the match to a third.

    Cuevas earned himself another 4 break point chances in the third set, but Ferrero continued to be tough mentally, and he held off each of them. The No. 4 seed will meet the promising you Ukranian Alexandr Dolgopolov in the quarterfinals.

    Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko kicked off his Umag campaign in the most promising way possible. His opponent, Stephane Robert, had nothing in his arsenal to hurt Davydenko with. The Russian took just 53 minutes to move into the quarterfinals. He did not face a single break point in the straight-set victory, while securing 4 breaks of Robert’s serve.

    Davydenko will take on Juan Ignacio Chela in the quarterfinals.
