In front of a hostile mostly French crowd backing Gasquet, and on his least favorite surface, Querrey was able to hold his nerve and get the victory.
Americans are notorious for being atrocious on clay, but Sam Querrey is looking to reverse the stereotype. He was the only American in the draw here, with guys like Roddick, Blake, Fish, and company choosing to stay at home. But not Sam. He has got the guts to come over to this unfamiliar surface, try his best, and see what he can do. And as it turns out, he's not a bad clay courter.
The main staple of the Querrey game is his serve. Being 198 cm, that is a given. The first set was all Gasquet. He was reading the Querrey serve well and moving the big guy around the court. Gasquet took care of his own service as well, moving it around the service box, losing just 3 points.
In the second, both men played fine tennis, with Querrey getting out of some 15-30 jams with big serves and smart play. No break points at all until the 4 all game with Querrey serving. The American buckled down and saved 7 total break points to hold serve. Sometime he hit a bit serve, sometimes he was able to win it with great point construction and defense, but he held for 5-4. After that, Gasquet basically handed Querrey the set with an abysmal service game, broken at love.
In the 3rd, Gasquet kept going, but Querrey really upped his level. He did not face a break point and only lost 5 points on his serve. He was able to easily hold with a big serve to start the point and take advantage, then proceeding to win the point with smart tactical play. Sometimes he would move Gasquet further and further back and end with a drop shot even. at 3-4, Gasquet played another poor service game to get broken. Brainless shots and horrible shot selection heavily contributed to this. Sam was able to serve it out easily at 5-3.
Querrey has picked up some good wins this week and is looking more and more like a clay court player with each match. He might even have a shot against Djokovic, with all the insane results that have happened this year on tour.
Fantastic week from Querrey
Wretched service games to get broken by Gasquet in the 2nd and 3rd sets. He will need to corral his immense talent at some point in his career

Did you know that... Ivo Karlovic and Joachim Johansson shares the record of most aces (51) in a match.
