  • Roddick's mastery of Robredo continues

Andy Roddick eases past Tommy Roredo on Wednesday night in the second round of the Masters Series Madrid. Next up for Roddick is Gael Monfils.

Andy Roddick made sure on Wednesday night in Madrid that his ninth encounter with Tommy Robredo would be no different than the previous eight. Roddick crushed Robredo 6-3, 6-4 in just one hour and eight minutes to book his place in the third round, where he will meet in-form Gael Monfils. Roddick improves to a perfect 9-0 against Robredo and owns him on every surface (3-0 on hard courts, 2-0 on both clay and grass, and 2-0 on indoor carpet).

Such a bleak head-to-head history seemed to weigh on Robredo right from the start. The Spaniard got broken in is opening service game to fall behind 2-0 in the first set and he never recovered. Roddick lost only five service points in four games as he raced to a 6-3 win the opening frame of play.

Set two saw a similarly dismal start for Robredo. He dropped serve in the opening game and that all but finished him. Roddick had to fend off one break point, but seven aces and a 77-percent service percentage helped his efforts in the second set. That one break proved to be enough for the American and he cruised into round three with ease.

Roddick finished with 13 aces and a mere one-double fault, while dictating play with his serve and forehand and mixing in slow stuff off the backhand wing. Robredo had no answer for any of it.

The No. 8 seed will have to be in the same form--or even better--against Monfils on Thursday. The Frenchman has taken out Fabio Fognini and Fernando Gonzalez already this week, so he should be going into his fourth career clash with Roddick. Monfils has won two of those previous matches, but both victories came on clay.
