Japanese favorite Kei Nishikori took on Frenchman Richard Gasquet for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals of his home country’s tournament.
Richard Gasquet took just under an hour to dispatch of Kei Nishikori in a show of complete dominance over the crowd favorite. Nishikori never had a glimpse on Gasquet’s serve; the Frenchman faced no break points throught the fifty-five minute rout. Gasquet had control of every aspect of the match. He won a shocking half of his return points and nearly 80% of the points on his own serve, and he broke Nishikori four times on his way to victory.
Gasquet will play the number 12 seed Rainer Schuettler in the quarterfinals.
In other Tokyo news, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced to withdraw from his match against Viktor Troicki of Serbia. The young Frenchman was up a set on Troicki when he pulled out of the match due to an abdominal strain. The Australian Open finalist has suffered from injury for most of the season, missing both the French Open and Wimbledon. Troicki moves onto the quarterfinals, where he will play American Andy Roddick.
Gasquet was absolutely brilliant. He lived up to every bit of the expectation that has been heaped on his shoulders in his young career.
Nishikori was totally outgunned.
