Third round action heated up for American Andy Roddick. He took on Jurgen Melzer of Austria. Roddick is looking to back up his tournament win in Beijing with another deep run in Tokyo.
The number two seed took just over an hour to send Jurgen Melzer home from Tokyo. The first set was quite competitive. Roddick, who has made a habit of relying heavily on his first serve to win him matches, struck 15 aces in the first set. He had a single break point against him in the set, but staved it off. Melzer was similarly tough on his own serve in the first. He hit roughly half the number of aces as Roddick (8), but the Austrian also had just a single break point against him, which he did not allow Roddick to convert.
The tiebreak was dominated by Roddick and his booming first serve. Melzer won just two points in the breaker before conceding the set.
Roddick picked up his return game in the second set, breaking Melzer twice and holding off two break points on his own serve. The American will play Viktor Troicki in the quarters. Troicki advanced on a walk-over when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was forced to withdraw from their third round match due to an abdominal injury.
Melzer made a match of it in the first set, keeping up with Roddick and his serve game for game.
Roddick continues to serve his way out of trouble. One gets the impression that if his serve went off, the American would be in trouble.
