Del Potro looked to go on another tournament tear on Friday, as he took on top seed David Ferrer in an exciting quarterfinal.
Long touted as the future of Argentine tennis, Juan Martin Del Potro has finally taken up the mantle. On Friday, he had another impressive win, this time over David Ferrer of Spain. The first set was an all-out drubbing. Ferrer was clearly off his game. He started off the match ominously. After going up 40-0, Del Potro managed to break his serve. After that point, the Argentine was forced to do nothing more than place the ball in play to win a point. Ferrer was so prone to error, that the simplest forehand was dumped into the net.
In true Ferrer fashion, the Spaniard was not ready to throw up his hands in defeat. He stayed with Del Potro until 3-4 in the second set, when the Argentine finally broke his serve. Showing the grit that he is well known for, Ferrer broke back with Del Potro serving for the match at 5-3. As it turns out, Ferrer was simply delaying the inevitable. Another break of serve late in the set gave Del Potro the victory, and left Ferrer, once again, with no hard court title in 2008.
Del Potro will clash with the red-hot Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the semifinals.
Continued fantastic play from Del Potro makes him a pleasure to watch on hard courts. Also, Ferrer's fight in the second set was good to see.
The error filled first set was a painful display from Ferrer.
