Dmitry Tursunov defeats Frank Dancevic to win the AEGON International title on Saturday afternoon. Tursunov captures his sixth ATP winner's trophy with the straight-set victory.
Dmitry Tursunov won the AEGON International on Saturday afternoon, dispatching qualifier Frank Dancevic 6-3, 7-6(5) in one hour and 22 minutes. It was a rematch of Dancevic's only previous ATP final, in which Tursunov also prevailed in straight sets (Indianapolis 2007).
Tursunov was never troubled on serve, and he secured the only break of the day with Dancevic serving at 3-4 in the first set. A loose game by the underdog Canadian gave Tursunov a chance to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-3, and he did in routine fashion.
Neither man could seize a break throughout a second set that was dominated by serves, although Dancevic had to save two break points to stay competitive. Tursunov suffered an ankle injury late in the match, but bounced back strong in the ensuing tiebreaker. The second-seeded Russian took a 6-4 lead and capitalized on his second championship point to finish it off.
Tursunov wrapped up the proceedings with 12 aces (nine in the second set) and never faced a break point in 11 service games. This is the world No. 27's sixth career ATP title.
"It's a great feeling," said Tursunov. "I suffered a bit in the second set, but now I feel great. Last season I didn't play as many matches ahead of Wimbledon.
Tursunov had been sidelined for two months earlier this season with a different ankle problem. "It is a completely different thing; it feels more like a tendon," he explained after surviving Dancevic. "I am definitely going to try to come out, unless I am going to be on crutches," Tursunov said of his prospects for Wimbledon. "Even then I will try to come out."
