Fabrice Santoro comes back from a set down to defeat Robby Ginepri in the second round of the AEGON International on Tuesday. Santoro will meet Ivan Ljubicic in the quarterfinals.
"The Magician" is not done yet.
Fabrice Santoro booked his place in another ATP quarterfinal on Tuesday, defeating Robby Ginepri 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the second round of the AEGONA International. Santoro needed one hour and 55 minutes to set up a quarterfinal showdown with Ivan Ljubicic.
However, it was Ginepri who struck first. The 114th-ranked American secured his second break of the afternoon with Santoro serving to stay in the opening frame of play at 4-5. Five aces to none for Santoro helped Ginepri take a one-set advantage.
Despite the setback, Santoro turned the tide in set two. The 35-year-old Frenchman capitalized on just one of five break-point opportunities, but he saved both of the break points he faced in order to consolidate his lead. A clutch service hold by Santoro at 5-4 leveled the match and forced a decisive third.
From there the veteran never looked back. Ginepri was utterly hopeless in the third, failing to fire a single ace while losing every single one of the nine points in which he had to toss in a second serve. Santoro broke three times in the final set, the third of which finished off Ginepri in style.
A rock-solid display of all-court tennis allowed Santoro to survive a poor serving day in which he made 48 percent of his first serves and did not record one ace. He compensated for it by winning an amazing 27 of 40 second-serve return points.
