Mikhail Youzhny joins James Blake and Ivo Karlovic among the final eight at the AEGON Championships in London, following his dismissal of third-seed Gilles Simon Thursday evening.
(14) Mikhail Youzhny def. (3) Gilles Simon 6-1, 2-6, 6-2
Mikhail Youznhy is through to his first Queen's Club quarterfinal after knocking out third seed Gilles Simon in the round of 16, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. After splitting the first two sets, the Russian took full advantage of an ailing Simon in the third. Youznhy built a 4-0, double-break lead in the final set, aided by the strength and accuracy of his backhand passing shots. The Russian, who completed the third set without giving up a service break, closed at 6-2 in an hour and 32 minutes of play. The former World No. 8 continues to blaze the comeback trail, reaching the quarterfinals in three out of his last four tournaments.
Youzhny will face James Blake on Friday. The sixth seed defeated compatriot Sam Querrey early Thursday, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
(6) James Blake def. Sam Querrey 6-4, 4-6, 6-3
James Blake advances to last eight following his 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 defeat of countryman Sam Querrey on Thursday. The 29-year old secures a quarterfinal-round berth for the second year in a row, despite a missed opportunity for a double-break lead and a blown 3-0 advantage in the second set. The sixth seed recovered nicely in set three, hitting three aces and winning 20 of 26 points on serve behind one break of the Querrey serve. With the round of 16 victory, Blake extends his lead to 5-1 in the head-to-head series.
(9) Ivo Karlovic def. (Q) Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-4
Ivo Karlovic clocked 19 aces during his 73-minute round of 16 battle with Nicolas Mahut Thursday afternoon. The Croat makes quarterfinal appearance No. 4 at Queen’s Club after taking out the 2007 runner-up and French qualifier in straight sets. Karlovic, striking an astonishing 80 aces so far this week, benefitted from a struggling Mahut, who donated a break of serve in the opening game of both the first and second set.
Karlovic meets Andy Roddick in the quarterfinal Friday afternoon. Roddick came through his round of 16 match, besting fellow four-time title winner Lleyton Hewitt, 7-6, 7-6.
