  • Rotterdam - Robredo advances, Tipsarevic ousted

Spain’s Tommy Robredo defeated Dutch hope Robin Haase in two tight sets. Janko Tipsarevic did not fare as well against Germany’s Florian Mayer.

Tommy Robredo def. Robin Haase 7-6(4), 6-4

Inconsistency was once again the enemy of Robin Haase. The world No. 361 had a 4-2 lead on Tommy Robredo in their first round match in Rotterdam. Errors crept into Haase’s game and he gave the break back to the Spaniard. Haase also found himself up a mini-break in the first-set tiebreak, but Robredo was able to take advantage of the Dutchman’s increasingly erratic form to take the opening set.

Robredo was able to take advantage in the second set with a single service break. The Spaniard moves into the second round, where he will take on Germany’s Florian Mayer.

Florian Mayer def. Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-6(6)

Tipsarevic’s woes continued on Monday in Rotterdam with a first round loss to Mayer. Tipsarevic is ranked 37th in the world, considerably higher than ther German’s No. 63, but it was the German who played the important points better. Tipsarevic was particularly dismal on break point conversions; he broke just once in 10 tries during the match.

Mayer nabbed the first set with relative ease. He faced no break points, and he secured an early break from Tipsarevic to put the Serb in an early hole. Mayer was forced to stave off three break points in the second to force a tiebreak, but Tipsarevic was just able to squeak out the set at 8-6 in the breaker. While the Serb had a massive seven break-point chances in the third set, he was only able to convert one of them. Unfortunately for Tipsarevic, Mayer was able to secure a break of his own.

The nearly three hour match was decided in another tiebreaker, which Mayer was able to win at 8-6.
