Ivo Karlovic was being compared to past grand slam champions by tennis pundits this evening. A little bit carried away perhaps as the big Croatian is yet to go deep into the second in any of the big four but that’s just how impressive today’s quarter-final performance was
Karlovic blew away the challenge of Germany’s Mikhail Zverev 6-3, 6-1 to make his first semi-final of 2008 and after 3 very emphatic straight sets wins, he looks the favourite for the title at the moment.
Karlovic broke to lead 4-2 in the first and from then on it was just one-way traffic. In all fairness to Zverev it’s tough to know what to do when your opponent is hitting an average of nearly 2 aces per service game (15 in total) and making 79% first serves. At one stage, the young German could only look on in near disbelief as Karlovic fired 3 consecutive bullets, all over 210 km/h. He did well to force 4 break points but wasn’t really given a chance on any
Aside from the serving, unusually, it was Karlovic’s defensive play which also stood out today. He’s spent a huge amount of time working on his movement in the past couple of years and his court coverage really frustrated Zverev today, limiting the damage he could do with his big leftie forehand. The German was barely able to win any points off his second serve, once they’d got into the rallies
Karlovic dropped just 3 points off his first serve
Zverev's second serve was targeted and really exposed today

Did you know that... Guillermo Vilas won 46 consecutive matches during 1977.
