  • World Tour Finals expert picks

    2011-11-19 23:43:37

The last tournament of the year is here and expert picks are back to commemorate the occasion. Who will advance to the semifinals and who will emerge victorious in London? The Tennistalk panel weighs in.

    Semifinals

Ricky "Don't lose that number" Dimon: Federer d. Djokovic 7-6(4), 6-2 and Murray d. Nadal 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2 - Federer and Murray are the no-brainer selections to reach the semifinals out of their respective groups. Djokovic obviously won't be a part of the semifinals if he is not close to 100 percent, but more than a week off will do him some good. Even though Nadal would have preferred David Ferrer instead of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Group B, he should have just enough to scrape through round-robin play. Look for an in-form Federer to have too much for Djokovic while Murray gets a golden chance to avenge last year's epic semifinal defeat against Nadal.

Cheryl "Judy" Murray: Federer d. Berdych 6-3, 7-5 and Murray d. Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 - Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't pick against Djokovic, but recent history suggests that Nole is not completely fit and against this crowd, a bum shoulder is not a good thing. Federer is in better form this year than he was last year, when he won. In fact, this is the best I've seen him play in a long while. Murray has a habit of losing to Nadal in the big moments, but I've got a feeling the Scot is due.

    Final

Ricky: Federer d. Murray 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 - Murray's heartbreak came in the semis in 2010, and this time it will come in the final. Federer had not won a single title since the first week of the season prior to this month, and now he has won two in a row. He looks ready to win a third, although a similarly in-form Murray will have something to say about that. The pressure on the Scot will once again be immense, so Federer--who is 2-0 lifetime against Murray at this event--has the slight edge.

Cheryl: Federer d. Murray 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(3) - This match could be a great one. Murray and Federer have been the in-form players this fall. I give the edge to Fed because Murray's serve isn't the weapon that Federer's is...and the Swiss is serving well enough to put a dent in the Murray return game. The crowd will be divided on this one. Murray is the hometown boy and a London resident, but Federer is immensely popular in the UK and he will have his own large contingent of fans.

Yaay! Expert picks!
My instinct says a Rafa vs Nole final, but it would be safe to go with the experts and choose Fed FTW.

smr , 11/20/11 12:29 AM

Well I'll stick with my original predictions even though Fish says there's no way he's giving up his spot and I have a feeling Nole unfortunately may play through this shoulder injury and perhaps even make it worse. So since I still have doubts about Nole's shoulder :

Semifinals

Federer over Berdych 7-5, 6-3 and Murray over Tsonga 6-3,6-7(4),6-3

Final

Federer over Murray 6-3,7-5

numero , 11/20/11 1:18 AM

Nadal-Djokovic final: Nadal in two, 7-5 6-2

willmw101 , 11/20/11 12:38 PM

semi

Fed /Berdych 6-3 7-5
Murray Tsonga 6-4 5-7 6-7

final
Fed-Tsonga 6-3 5-7 7-6

But I have got advantage after seeing the state of Nadal.

Sienna , 11/21/11 9:40 AM

Sienna, Yes definitely an advantage predicting after seeing coker fish almost pull it out.
Semis:
Federer/Djokovic 6-4 6-4 (yes djokovic will scrape through)
Murray/Tsonga 6-2 7-6(4) (tsonga has the habbit of playing very poor first sets)

Final:
Federer/Murray 7-5 6-4

bleck , 11/21/11 10:14 AM

I meant choker not "coker" lol

bleck , 11/21/11 10:16 AM

Interesting that you have a Murray-Fed final here and people are picking Fed to win it. Given the comments Federer (as he always somehow seems to find them) had on Murray's Asian swing, I think the Scot might feel the need for some vindication.

samprallica , 11/21/11 10:26 AM

Fed/Muzza final with Muzza taking the whole enchilada..............

rafaisthebest , 11/21/11 10:36 AM

ROFL at all the murray predictions

willmw101 , 11/21/11 6:03 PM

hindsight is 20-20 willmw101

moammar over osama

7-5 6-7 7-6

Sosueme , 11/21/11 6:20 PM

It's not over until the fat lady sings. I remember Federer losing his first match one year and ended up winning the trophy.

nadline , 11/21/11 6:24 PM

You drive me nuts more than occasionally & I know we shall fight in the future..
But,
You are quite the sweetie sometimes Nadline :-)

Sosueme , 11/21/11 6:38 PM

@Nadline

lol!!

was it consolation for murray fans!!

mani4Tennis , 11/21/11 7:36 PM

No good nadline, still *sobbing* but nice try...

deuce , 11/21/11 9:07 PM

deuce,

I read on a Rafa fan forum that Andy has said that he will make a decision about possible withdrawal tomorrow. So he hasn't pulled out yet, unless there is other information out there.

Don't give up and please don't cry anymore! :)

Nativenewyorker , 11/21/11 9:11 PM

NNY, if he can't beat Ferrer he can't beat anyone else, best to withdraw and heal. Another blooming disappointment for poor Andy, just when he was getting some confidence about his form.
Must go now, have run out of tissues, must go down to chemist and buy some more.."sniff- sob-sniffle--sob* may be some time *sniff sniff*

deuce , 11/21/11 9:33 PM

Oh dear, deuce, don't be sad. Whatever happens now, there's still tomorrow. If it is not Murray's time now, it will be in the future. Stay positive, that's something Rafa fans did during his 2009 and are still doing now.

luckystar , 11/22/11 12:27 AM

Yes, as lucky said no one knows better than Rafa fans what it means to deal with heartbreaking injuries. I feel for all of the great Murray fans on this site. If he can possibly play, he will. If not there is a new year ahead and good things waiting for him.

Maybe it's best to let deuce cry it out. I have been there. Kisses and hugs being sent to her! :)

Nativenewyorker , 11/22/11 2:14 AM

I think ferrer cud win the whole thing...Murray almost gone, Rafa/Nole looking very scrappy...Fed not that great either

ok, now pls dont bash me for backing ferrer:-)

atul1985 , 11/22/11 5:51 AM

NNY and lucky, thank you. All shops in town have now run out of tissues so have had to stop crying. Andy's groin strain could easily become a tear, so hope he pulls out. As I said elsewhere, if he can't beat Ferrer he can't beat anyone so no point playing anyway.
The difference between Rafa 2009 and Andy now, is that Rafa had already achieved so much before then, slam wise,so that must have been consoling.

deuce , 11/22/11 7:50 AM

Aaaghhh................now u made me cry too, deucy....

rafaisthebest , 11/22/11 9:57 AM

deuce,

Please try to hang in there. I know how much you and other Murray fans were looking forward to seeing him play here. I really feel for you. It's times like this that make one realize that there are simply no words.

Just know that Andy will be back next year will spirit and a renewed commitment to do his best. This cannot wipe out the great tennis he played and his wins in the Asian swing.

I will be thinking of you! :)

Nativenewyorker , 11/22/11 10:14 AM

deuce, 11/22/11 7:50 AM
I sniffled a bit too because I really thought he was in with a chance this year :-(((
I hope he doesn't decide to play with a groin injury just to be heroic and not let the public down.

atul1985, 11/22/11 5:51 AM
I share your thoughts that Daveed is capable of fighting through to the final and even doing a Davydenko if he gets there. I just wish he didn't have the tendancy to rush things so much when the finishing line is in sight.

ed251137 , 11/22/11 11:20 AM

ed, I too really hope Andy isn't pressurised into playing. Remember what happened when John Lloyd did just that and made Andy play Davis Cup? I think he was out for two months after. He can't afford that. I heard a tournament spokesperson on the radio this morning and was not impressed at all. No doubt the thumbscrews will be out. :(

deuce , 11/22/11 12:36 PM

One of the fed fans was intimating yesterday that Andy was doing a `Davydenko`also. I didn't know what he meant until i realised that the russian was involved or accused of match rigging or something, this character put 2 & 2 together to make 5 and reasoned that this is what Muzz was up to. Wow.
Some people eh?
I would also hope for Daveed to do a Davy in the right way ie win it next week.
All of the top 4 have been there for the taking, alright Murray is injured & I've no doubt he would have won otherwise, but you can only play the cards you've been dealt, so it would be nice if an underdog (or terrier) won it again.

Sosueme , 11/22/11 12:54 PM

Ferrer has no chance. He'll likely lose his next 2 matches.

bleck , 11/22/11 1:16 PM

No, he probably doesn't.

Sosueme , 11/22/11 1:19 PM

Have a lot of respect for Ferrer and his never say die attitude. Hope he does well in this tournament. Getting to be No 5 in the world is quite an achievement in itself.

Shame about Andy though.

schatz , 11/22/11 1:21 PM

I take back my tongue in cheek remark @ 11.20AM. I dont think anybody is capable of stopping Roger in his present mood. He's got his eye on that Masters Cup record.

ed251137 , 11/22/11 11:04 PM

Right now, the most likely scenario is a Federer-Djokovic final. I'd love to see how that pans out.

samprallica , 11/23/11 7:16 AM

I like how my picks look now. Except for Murray, who pulled out due to injury, I picked all the semifinalists. I think Berdych is a slight favorite over Tsonga and Roger to take the whole thing still.

numero , 11/25/11 11:30 PM

I voted for Fed in the TT poll before the tournament even began...I just knew he would be most ready, most rested and most in form physically and emotionally...the rest of the top 4 looked wasted prior to this tournament and I knew they would not go too far...However, I sure did not see Andy's injury coming and that was really disappointing...I somehow knew Rafa would not win the thing but kind off expected, rather hoped, he would do better than what he did...well, good for the Fed's fans...enjoy while it lasts...

natashao , 11/26/11 1:34 PM

ricky,
As always your pick is flawed, others please eat crowmeat.
