  • Wimbledon final picks: Nadal vs. Djokovic

    2011-07-02 21:43:07

It's No. 1 vs. No. 1 for the Wimbledon title; Rafael Nadal (current No. 1 player in the world) vs. Novak Djokovic (Monday's No. 1 player in the world regardless of the final's outcome). Will Djokovic beat the Spaniard for a fifth consecutive time this season and capture his first title at the All-England Club? Or will Nadal triumph for the third time in London and stay within striking distance of regaining the No. 1 ranking in 2011? The Tennistalk experts have spoken and please join in the fun in the comments section!

    (1) Rafael Nadal vs. (2) Novak Djokovic

Ricky: Something will have to give when Nadal and Djokovic collide on Sunday in a highly-anticipated Wimbledon final that features the best rivalry of tennis' current era. Djokovic has owned Nadal this season, going 4-0 in finals between the two players including two straight-set victories on clay. The Serb, however, is not at his very best on grass and this will be his first title match at the All-England Club. Nadal, on the other hand, is contesting his fifth Wimbledon final and is bidding for his third winner's trophy. The Spaniard has not lost a match at this event since 2007 (he had a DNP due to injury in 2009) and he is once again playing ridiculous tennis this time around. Expect this one to live up to the hype. Nadal 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

Cheryl: Current No. 1 against future No. 1. Short of another Nadal-Federer final or hometown hero Andy Murray winning, it's everything the organizers could hope for. Djokovic has the advantage of having defeated Nadal in their last four meetings...two of which came on Nadal's beloved clay. The difference is that this is grass AND it's a major. Nadal is a better grass-court player than Djokovic and he's been in better form over the past two weeks. The question mark in this match is whether Djokovic is still in Nadal's head or not. If the Spaniard can manage his demons, he'll win a third Wimbledon title. Nadal 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4.

mriidula: Being a Djokovic fan all the way from 2007 is finally paying off; 2011 has literally been a year of thrills. However, after watching his post-match celebration on Friday (on repeat!), one can’t help but wonder if he's already reached an emotional high, what with finally snatching the No. 1 ranking and making it to the final of his dream tournament. And let’s not forget whom Djokovic is going to be playing. It’ll take something special to beat Nadal at Wimbledon. I'll be rooting for Nole throughout, but Nadal is clearly the favorite. Nadal 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Nadal posted on his Facebook to pick how many sets will be the match, and win T-sbirt and signed cap. How cool is that?

majorbaeb , 7/2/11 10:01 PM

Nole has surprised me 4 times this year. I don't think he's satisfied with reaching #1 in the rankings. Look for the HC, clay and grass Rafa-sweep and the GS flood gates to open for Nole here. Nole in 4.

numero , 7/2/11 10:05 PM

over/under on total games is 41.5

RickyDimon , 7/2/11 10:07 PM

This should be quick... 32 games...

atg , 7/2/11 10:37 PM

Nadal in 4.

forehandblitzer , 7/2/11 11:04 PM

Rafa in 4......................VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!

Monalysa , 7/2/11 11:42 PM

rafael nadal in 4 sets.

Vaaamos

vrael , 7/3/11 12:21 AM

good preview mriidula, you have successfully factored out the bias from your prediction which many people cant manage to do :) best of luck to you man but I too think my man shall prevail in 4 tough sets

vamosrafa , 7/3/11 2:45 AM

Novak in 4: 7-5, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(6)

Marko , 7/3/11 2:57 AM

Rafa in 3.

6-4,7-6,6-4

atul1985 , 7/3/11 3:54 AM

Numero..onle u and me predict Novak's win:)

Marko , 7/3/11 4:13 AM

numero picked Nole to win? That seals it. Rafa for the title. :D

JK, numero. ;)

cherylmurray , 7/3/11 4:19 AM

Imagine disorder and chaos in rafa's head if he lose tomorrow 5th time in a row to the same guy...in finals..first time in GS...that would be the first man other than Roger who beat Rafa in the GS final..Novak for history:)

Marko , 7/3/11 4:30 AM

Lol Cheryl I usually don't make predictions either. Have a feeling this time though. :)

numero , 7/3/11 4:38 AM

Numero, u have a right feeling:)Cheers from Nis, Serbia:)

Marko , 7/3/11 4:43 AM

The differentiator tomorrrow I think will be Nadal's 1st service percentage. Both have strong baseline games and ability to move around the court. But Rafa could do himself a great service by having good service...no pun intended. People here are saying Nadal is better than Nole on grass but I'm not so sure about that.

Mentally, I think Nole is more confident than Rafa. Rafa also has some hidden injuries in which he's taking pain killers.

jngannex , 7/3/11 5:08 AM

@jnhannex
Totally agree...Just remember what ppl said before Rome final...90% ppl,me too, thought that Rafa will win for sure....I think Rafa already has mental block when he plays against Nole..

Marko , 7/3/11 5:14 AM

@Marko - Rafa will not lose tomorrow, so no chance of any disorder. Nole's head will be in disorder after losing to Rafa, as he will realise that Rafa is a completely different beast in Grand Slams.

atul1985 , 7/3/11 5:16 AM

We will see, atul...9 hrs to go!!!:)

Marko , 7/3/11 5:27 AM

learned my lesson from the semis, i'm never gonna pick rafa to lose the 1st set again...:-)

rafa 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2

VAMOS!

phoenix , 7/3/11 5:50 AM

Rafa's backhand is the key...

My prediction is Rafa in 4- 6/4, 3/6, 7/6, 6/4.

jaskarans , 7/3/11 7:11 AM

Agree with the above, Rafa is different in slams, astonishing ability to raise his level.
I shall enjoy this one and hope it's good one :)
Rafa in 4.

deuce , 7/3/11 7:24 AM

Marko, after knowing Rafa had fever in Rome, I don't think many people thought Rafa would beat Nole in the final in Rome. In fact the reverse was true, that people were sceptical that Rafa would win, especially after what happened in Madrid. It was in Miami that if I remember correctly that I predicted Rafa would win the Miami final, after seeing how he had beaten Berdych and Fed. Little did I know then that Rafa's fitness was not as good as Nole's as Nole outlasted Rafa in that long hot afternoon!

luckystar , 7/3/11 8:47 AM

Mental block or not, don't expect it to be the stumbling block for Rafa. Rafa has shown that he can deal with mental blocks, as demonstrated from the way he handled and beat Delpo, twice this year. Rafa knows by now what to expect from Nole, and he certainly won't take Nole lightly. It all boils down to who can play the game better on the day.

luckystar , 7/3/11 8:55 AM

I am not good at predicting and most likely will never get to be guest picker, but here goes.

It's Rafa in four.

7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5

Nativenewyorker , 7/3/11 8:56 AM

Nole in 4 or 5, he just moves better and neutralises Rafa like no other opponent can. Plus he looks confident enough - getting the no.1 ranking might have been the confidence boost he needed yet again.

samprallica , 7/3/11 9:15 AM

numero picked Nole to win? That seals it. Rafa for the title. :D - cherylmurray , 7/3/11 4:19 AM

cheryl, don't forget that ricky picked rafa to win which worries me. ;-)

phoenix , 7/3/11 9:27 AM

Ricky predicted Rafa for Wimby semis too over Murray too

nothing matters who picks whom..all depends what is done on court..

I think Rafa in 4.. AS I said yesterday this match will not be won by skill, it will be won more on intangibles- hunger, desire, belief

Its depends on what overpowers the other - Nole wanting to fulfill his childhood dream and gettng the hunger on court OR Rafa out to avenge his 4 losses and capturing the 3rd Wimby crown and making a statement that even though he lost the No 1, He is the MAN

sanju , 7/3/11 9:50 AM

Oh but phoenix, whatever Ricky says now the jinx is nullified by the fact that he picked Federer over Murray in the final to start with.

nadline , 7/3/11 10:19 AM

that's quite a relief, thanks for reminding me nadline. ;-)

phoenix , 7/3/11 10:24 AM

People here are saying Nadal is better than Nole on grass but I'm not so sure about that.

jngannex , 7/3/11 5:08 AM

How many grass titles has Nole got?

nadline , 7/3/11 10:26 AM

Who would win??? and tennis will get out of it..

If nadal wins djoker will be no.1 and nadal will still remain the favourite for slams..

If djoker wins we can see the pressure intesnsify at the top, djoker's win will give him more confident for future, but being no.1 means u r the favourite in each tournament u go, and u need to win most of them..

being no.1 comes with the pressure of retaining it for as long as you can..

it could be either way..

Djoker will return the ball as much as nadal can..

Djoker in 4 or nadal in 5..

champ00289 , 7/3/11 11:07 AM

Nadal 7-6 6-3 7-6.I agree with mriidula about Djoko reaching his emotional top. He's probaly still on cloud 9 after that tough semis win,but he'll make it competitive and I can already see Novak smiling in trophy ceremony giving Nadal all the credit in his runner up speech.

Ice , 7/3/11 12:42 PM

Borg has just picked Rafa for the first time ever that I've heard. Don't know whether to be pleased or not.

nadline , 7/3/11 2:12 PM

40 minutes to go...VAMOS!!!

phoenix , 7/3/11 2:19 PM

Nadal 6-4 6-4 6-3 :)

vmk1 , 7/3/11 2:26 PM

Patrick McEnroe has picked Rafa to win.

numero , 7/3/11 2:26 PM

What's up with these Rafa detractors picking Rafa all of a sudden? Either they are fed up of being on the wrong side or they are trying to jinx him.

Vamos Rafa!

nadline , 7/3/11 2:30 PM

its just because the guy at the other end of the net is not Federer..

champ00289 , 7/3/11 2:35 PM

No, it's because they are feeling guilty, about accusing Rafa of gamesmanship, so they're now trying to make up for it. Who cares anyway about their predictions, sometimes we do better then them in predicting the outcome.

luckystar , 7/3/11 2:46 PM

björn borg was the only famous commentator to support nadal when he won his first wimbledon title. everyone else was picking federer

croc , 7/3/11 2:52 PM

Well, I think that whoever wins the first set will win the match. You have to establish from the beginning who's the boss. I hope it'll be Novak. Nadal has 0% chance to win in 3 sets. Everything else is possible. I think it's gonna be Nole in 4 sets. Vamos - tamos all the way!

uroshu , 7/3/11 2:54 PM

croc, Borg would have picked Rafa then because Rafa had not threatened his record whilst Federer was threatening his Wimby record. Today I don't know why he is picking Rafa.

Vamos Rafa!

nadline , 7/3/11 3:11 PM

Rafa all the way!

Play better and bite the trophy champ!

Vamosss !!!

Raindrops , 7/3/11 3:13 PM

VAMOS!!!

phoenix , 7/3/11 3:40 PM

Two down, one to go...Vamos Nole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

uroshu , 7/3/11 4:31 PM

What did I tell you guys? Nole is making new tennis history and you can simply forget all the previous statistics. We've got a new No 1 and a new great champ! Go, Nole go!

uroshu , 7/3/11 6:40 PM

Nole - THE NEW KING OF TENNIS!! Ricky - LOOK AT MY PREDICTION - I was the most close!!!!!Only number of games missed:)And the right prediction of sets winning - first two to Novak, third to Rafa, fourth to Novak:)Does it mean I have the right to predict US Open in 2 months:)))Big cheerss from Serbia:)

Marko , 7/3/11 6:52 PM

It feels good to be right! Nole in 4!

numero , 7/3/11 6:52 PM

@Marko, nice prediction.... I was thinking on something quickier, 7-5, 6-4, 6-4... almost close to number of games.... didn't expect that 3rd, but amazed with ease Novak was playing 1st 2 sets.

atg , 7/3/11 7:17 PM

Marko - yep!

RickyDimon , 7/4/11 6:26 PM

Thnx, Ricky:)

Marko , 7/4/11 10:21 PM

Can we put an end to a blog that was written in 2009?

numero , 7/10/11 4:28 AM

>>>>

numero , 7/10/11 6:02 AM

Why número, when there are people who wish to post on that thread? I don't see why we need to stop people from posting where they want to post as long as the posts are not offensive.

luckystar , 7/10/11 10:30 AM

Can we put an end to a blog that was written in 2009?

numero , 7/10/11 4:28 AM

numero, are you trying to censure TT? TT is a free forum, it's not a dictatorship and if people want to keep a thread going, you don't have a right to ask for it to be closed. You are just jealous that it's a Rafa thread.

nadline , 7/10/11 10:45 AM

Numero, your hatred, bitterness and jealousy is really eating you up inside that you are becoming ridiculous and laughable! It's time for you to seriosuly seek professional help.

jean , 7/10/11 10:52 AM

I agree with the nadelettes on this issue. This blog actually has great potential in the months to come. How is Rafa doing in Ibiza?

I remember a few weeks ago Cheryl making indirect claims towards Borg using partydrugs in Studio 45 (was it?) back in the 80's! I was wondering why she allowed herself to make such claims or statements. Ibiza is well known for it's share of partydrug users.
I am sure Rafa won't have anything with the stuff that Cheryl pointed out with Borg's stays or whereabouts in that specific club.

Sienna , 7/10/11 12:58 PM

I think sienna better worry about Fed, for nobody knows what he's doing away from tennis, hiding somewhere that nobody knows. At least we know where Rafa is and sienna is spying on him.

luckystar , 7/10/11 1:15 PM

Sienna, Rafa comes from the Balearic Islands which includes Ibiza he was born and bred on those Islands so your cheap jibe is just what it is - a cheap jibe. He's been holidaying in Ibiza every year after Wimbledon, so wash your mouth out. You are not suggesting that he should emigrate to the 'coffee shops' in Holland are you?

Actually, Rafans, if you don't mind me saying so, the best treatment for Sienna is to ignore her. If no one responds to her posts, she'll soon get frustrated and stop making ridiculous comments.

nadline , 7/10/11 2:15 PM

Yes noted nadline. Sienna is one bitter Fed fan so let sienna stay as bitter as can be. It looks like sienna's bitter days are going to continue....

luckystar , 7/10/11 2:28 PM

I'm not sure what you are on about? I actually said Rafa would have nothing to do withthat. But to saythat it is relaxing? Well I.m sure hewillvisita party or two.He is humanafterall. So he is allowed to have fun, but never I impliedheuses drugs. Come on with all the testing these guys do? And they cannot all be so lucky like Gasguet's.
In fact I just pointed out it wasCheryl herself who implied that Borg was using those partydrugs in visiting Studio 45. I thought that was a bit ofthe mark. but you gals go ahead and have fun.
Hypocrites and prejudists fule of hate towards Federer. I read both youre false statements made again and again whenever federer is involved or even not involved. Always trying to bring him down. Pathetic.

Sienna , 7/10/11 3:57 PM

Hmmmm

numero , 7/10/11 5:50 PM

What's all this about the Raffington being as bald as a coot?
It's not very tennis related is it?
I don't see it anyway, it looks fine.
Is it hidden behind the bandana or something?
Wasn't his hair always like this, and if not, would he fail the ATP drug testing if he got started on a course of minoxidil?
Questions, Questions.......

Sosueme , 7/10/11 5:58 PM

Good evening everyone......I haven't been here for a while, I've noticed nothing has been changed so far over here, special regards for Mr. Ricky, I do have a question for him, WHO CROWNED THE WIMBLEDON? I THINK NOVAK, AM I RIGHT.....LOL......
WHO'S THE NUMBER ONE? OH YEAH. NOVAK DJOKOVIC.......HEHEHE.....

gordana , 7/13/11 9:53 PM

Maybe the bald or balding guys get the ribbing here.:)

numero , 7/15/11 9:36 PM

I see that things have not been dull here during the time I have taken my sabbatical.

It's hard even trying to catch up!
