  • Approach Shots: Nadal back in action, Del Potro returns

    2010-09-26 23:15:00

“Approach Shots” is Ricky’s weekly look at what’s ahead (or “approaching”) on the ATP Tour. Every Sunday he previews all the tournaments scheduled for the upcoming week.

    He’s baaaaaaaaaack!

No, not Rafael Nadal. Although Nadal is back this week, playing for the first time since winning his first U.S. Open title earlier this month.

The man in question, of course, is 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro. Finally recovered (or so it seems) from wrist surgery, Del Potro will take the court this week for the first time since the Australian Open.

Del Potro is joined by Nadal for what is a highly-anticipated—to say the least—Thailand Open in Bangkok. In fact, it even overshadows the Malaysian Open, which actually boasts a considerably stronger field from top to bottom. Four of the top nine players in the world are on hand in Kuala Lumpur.

    PTT Thailand Open

    Where: Bangkok, Thailand
    Surface: Hard
    Prize Money: $551,000
    Points: 250

    Top Seed: Rafael Nadal
    Defending Champion:
    Gilles Simon (not playing)

Draw Analysis: As luck would have it, Nadal and Del Potro are in the same quarter of the draw. While that’s bad news for the tournament, and for its two marquee players, it is good news for those fans clamoring for a Nadal-Delpo showdown. Nadal has to win just one match and Del Potro two in order for it to happen in the quarterfinals.

It’s hard to imagine anyone paying particularly close attention to any other section of the bracket, but nonetheless…. Ernests Gulbis, the No. 4 seed, is the clear favorite in a soft second quarter. Having Michael Berrer as his nearest seeded opponent is good news for Gulbis, although that good news may end in the semis against either Nadal or Del Potro.

The bottom half is far more wide open, with No. 2 seed Fernando Verdasco and No. 3 Jurgen Melzer receiving the first-round byes (like Nadal and Gulbis in the top half). Melzer’s first real test could come in the quarterfinals against 2009 runner-up Viktor Troicki. Verdasco could open against Metz finalist Mischa Zverev before a potential quarterfinal clash against Thiemo De Bakker.

First-Round Upset Alert: Guillermo Garcia-Lopez over (8) Michael Berrer. How Michael Berrer is seeded at such a good tournament is one of tennis’ great mysteries. Actually, it’s because he got off to a torrid start this season and racked up a decent amount of points. Berrer is in far worse form at the moment and Garcia-Lopez has been playing impressive tennis ever since the beginning March. The unseeded Spaniard should advance without too much trouble.

Hot: Rafael Nadal, Fernando Verdasco, Jurgen Melzer, Mischa Zverev

Cold: Juan Martin Del Potro, Rainer Schuettler, Marco Chiudinelli, Danai Udomchoke, Benjamin Becker

Semifinal Predictions: Rafael Nadal over Ernests Gulbis and Jurgen Melzer over Fernando Verdasco

    Final Prediction: Nadal over Melzer

    Malaysian Open

    Where: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
    Surface: Indoor Hard
    Prize Money: $850,000
    Points: 250

    Top Seed: Robin Soderling
    Defending Champion
    : Nikolay Davydenko

Draw Analysis: 250-point tournaments don’t get much better than this.

Someone will have to consult the history books, but has any 250-pointer ever boasted four of the top nine players in the world in its field? That is just the case this week, as Robin Soderling, Nikolay Davydenko, Tomas Berdych, and Mikhail Youzhny are the top four seeds in Kuala Lumpur.

Of those four, Berdych and Youzhny have the most difficult draws. Berdych’s first opponent is likely to come in the form of Denis Istomin, who is in the midst of a breakout year on the ATP Tour. The seventh-ranked Czech could then run into No. 5 seed David Ferrer.

Youzhny could open against Alexandr Dolgopolov, who—like Istomin—is really making a name for himself in 2010. The ninth-ranked Russian is on a collision course for the quarterfinals with No. 6 seed Marcos Baghdatis. A tough third section of the draw also includes Kei Nishikori, whom Baghdatis is going up against in the first round.

Other potential quarterfinal matchups include Soderling vs. eighth-seeded Andrey Golubev and Davydenko vs. seventh-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky. In addition to Baghdatis vs. Nishikori, first-round matchups to watch include Ferrer vs. Bernard Tomic, Golubev vs. Yen-Hsun Lu, and Istomin vs. Marsel Ilhan.

First-Round Upset Alert: Yen-Hsun Lu over (8) Andrey Golubev. While Golubev has no need to apologize for where he is ranked (No. 39 as of Sunday), almost half of his points (500 of 1080) come from Hamburg alone. The Kazakh is not at that same level right now and Lu is having one of his best years, which includes a stunning appearance in the Wimbledon quarterfinals. Chinese Taipei’s top player should enjoy strong crowd support and he has a good chance of winning this one.

Hot: Robin Soderling, Mikhail Youzhny, David Ferrer, Marcos Baghdatis, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Kevin Anderson, Kei Nishikori

    Cold: Michael Russell, Igor Kunitsyn

Semifinal Predictions: Robin Soderling over Tomas Berdych and Mikhail Youzhny over Sergiy Stakhovsky

    Final Prediction: Soderling over Youzhny

I think we are all curious to see how that wrist has healed. Good luck JMDP on your return.

Don't place too much hope on Delpo, he'll not be match fit. As Rafa only starts play on 30 Sept, I'm now more interested in the KL Open, so many interesting match-ups: Berdych vs Istomin; Youzhny vs Dolgo boy; Baggy vs Nishikori; Davy vs Stakovsky; Ferrer vs Tomic. Do not know whether there is any streaming available, as not shown over tv here.

I think in the Queen's club tournament this year, Rafa, Nole, Murray, Roddick, four of the top ten guys had shown up. Of course that was a warm up tournament for Wimbledon, so its understandable that so many top ten players showed up. This KL tournament is interesting, why did it attract so many top ten players, when some of them have to play next week in either Beijing or Tokyo, and followed that with Shanghai, ie playing for consecutive three weeks!

luckystar , 9/27/10 10:16 AM

luckystar, I don't want to entertain the thought of "scared to rafa" but maybe the organizers of KL have approached these players earlier, while the organizers of Bangkok were joined together travelling to Spain to persuade Nadal to play in Thailand. The treatment they given to Nadal during his arrival in Bangkok speaks volume. For that, Rafa should win the tournament lolz lolz lolz.

Ok thanks Augustina.

luckystar , 9/27/10 1:50 PM

Your right luckystar we probabaly won't see Delpo back in form before next year.
last night I watched a qualifying match from Thailand on fromsport ... you could try there also.

smr , 9/27/10 3:41 PM

OK smr will try both and see which is better. I watched this young guy from India, Bambri last night playing against one Malaysian guy and Bambri won the match. Bambri is one of those up and coming young players right? Among that group consisting Ryan Harrison, Grigor Dmitrov, Bernard Tomic, and one young Serbian player Filip something? (sorry can't remember his name). I think a few more American like Devin Britton, Chase Buchanan, too? Oh yes one more 17 year old from Spain, Carlos Beluda.

Will be interesting to watch this group of young players and see who is likely to be the next Fed or the next Rafa. I think it is very difficult to find another Rafa. Rafa appeared some 20+ years after Borg, whom many people compared Rafa against. Fed is sometimes compared to Sampras and also Laver. So the hunt for a new Fed and new Rafa is on...

luckystar , 9/28/10 5:11 AM

i would say davydenko is cold. i hope he will heat up again like last fall, but can't see it coming.

very interesting tournaments this week!

croc , 9/28/10 10:39 AM

luckystar I like to watch the newbies too. I'll keep an eye out for Bambri. I'm happy that young Canadian Milos Raonic won his match last night in Kuala Lumpur.

smr , 9/28/10 1:00 PM

Hi smr, I heard about Raonic too, I think I saw one of his matches at some other tournament, quite impressive. It seems that this KL tournament is quite an interesting one, is there a match to be played between Ferrer and Tomic too? So many young players in this tournament, good to look out for them and see how they play. This is the first time I saw a Bambri match, the last time I saw him was in that exhibition with Harrison, Sampras and Agassi at Macau.

I think Tomic is one up and coming young player, he was impressive against Cilic at this year's AO. Tomic's style is really very similar to Murray's. So far I have watched those young players that I mentioned above played their matches, only missed out Filip and Carlos Beluda.

One 21 year old player to look out for - Dolgopolov - very interesting player, very special style of play. He is still in the tournament so hopefully can get to see his match.

luckystar , 9/28/10 1:25 PM

Yeah luckystar,

I kinda like Dolgopolov..........i see a lot of prospects there!!!!

Monalysa , 9/28/10 3:56 PM

Awww Milos Raonic won and is now in his first atp quarter-finals. Granted he beat the lowest ranked main entrant to the tournament and a very tired Stakhovsky but we all need a bit of luck. :)

smr , 9/29/10 2:40 PM

I am sure Nadal is there to handle Potro. On the other side I wish Yuki Bhambri puts up a decent fight against Ferrer in his second round match. Yuki just won his first ATP World tour match. Migrating to the senior level. Read more - www.tennisjunction.in

mohitsatraj , 9/29/10 8:32 PM

motraj - Del Potro is already out; lost to Rochus

RickyDimon , 9/30/10 3:19 AM

Happy for Raonic and Bhambri, too bad Dolgo boy didn't make it. Too bad also De Bakker didn't make it in Bangkok, lost in three tight sets. So sad that Davy get knocked out so soon, he has so many points to defend from now on and he is not ready to defend them, poor Davy.

luckystar , 9/30/10 4:59 AM

luckystar-davydneko is really struggling. He wont be at the WTF,and he will be out of the top 20 by the end of the year.

tj600 , 9/30/10 5:27 AM

luckystar :)
Bit sad about Debakker's loss I watched much of that match and I really thought he would win ... i guess Brands just kept on serving strong. Dolgo was just unlucky in drawing a hot Youzhny.

smr , 9/30/10 5:49 AM

De Bakker is one of my favorite together with Dolgo boy, among the up and coming 21-22 year olds. I hope to see them in the top twenty soon and compete well against the top ten guys. Both Davy and Delpo are really affected by their wrist injuries. Well after seeing how Rafa suffered after his injury last year, I guess we shouldn't expect too much from these two guys. They are very good players, so like Nalby, they'll move up the rankings soon even though they may suffer now.

luckystar , 10/1/10 5:35 AM

luckystar, the only difference being that Rafa's losses during the time he was recovering from injury are constantly being used as a stick to beat him with, because I'm sure that Delpo's loss to O. Rochus is not going to be held against him, or Davy's loss to Andreev.

nadline , 10/1/10 11:24 AM

Filler

smr , 10/1/10 4:30 PM

@ Nadline: I think people are more likely to be sympathetic owards DelPotro due to the fact that he's been off the tour for several months., e.g., 9 months to be exact, as opposed to Nadal being on and off on several occasions. It's similar to employee (a) being out with the flu for two weeks, when employee ()0 is out of work for only 3 days with the same flu. That said, a wrist injury is extremely serious and a player is very handicapped trying to serve and returning.

Von , 10/2/10 5:07 AM

watching rafa's semi right now and oh my...the guy is playing AWESOME hard court tennis. I have NEVER seen him play this type fo hard court tennis, not even at the Us open, and he is the best volleyer in the game now (johhny mac was right!! ) .

what about all those stupid theories regarding the court speed doing this to rafa, doing that bla bla bla !! LOL....the court speed of this indoor surface is doing NOTHING against nadal and he is just using the speed to hsi own adv and enjoying out there.vamos rafa !! conquer the indoor season

vamosrafa , 10/2/10 10:32 AM

argghh the poor break point conversion rate continues for rafa though..the only thing that is frustrating me right now abt his game is this one...

vamosrafa , 10/2/10 11:02 AM

2/21 break points so far

SGHIceman , 10/2/10 11:06 AM

22 bp...lets see...sigh

vrael , 10/2/10 11:09 AM

22nd vanished...23rd now..lol

vrael , 10/2/10 11:10 AM

has any1 earnt and then lost so many bp's in a best of three EVER?????

INSANE!!!

vrael , 10/2/10 11:14 AM

I have no idea vrael, what I know is that, Nadal is susceptible to LOPEZes lolz. You know Feliciano at Queens early this year right?

Now the score is 3-3 of 2nd set, time to finish the show Rafa, VAMOS !!!

Raindrops , 10/2/10 11:23 AM

hehe he lost the 2nd set 6-7. This is interesting!

Raindrops , 10/2/10 11:58 AM

5-2 Lopez at 3rd Set.

Rafa, good luck, let's see if you can pull this off !!!

Vamos !!!

Raindrops , 10/2/10 12:25 PM

what the hell was that??!! LOL ...those missed chances just frustrated rafa sooo much and he just couldntn concentrate..very strange match... never mind, tokyo next..still rafa playing GREAT , those missed chances against lopez were just miraculous! nothing to worry about. good match from lopez though.

vamosrafa , 10/2/10 12:31 PM

Lopez BP was just one of one. Lol.

smr , 10/2/10 12:42 PM

I am sad that Rafa lost today, but a good thing is that he got one more day to rest before the next tournament, which begins in Tokyo on Monday. He will start to play there from the 1st round.

Augustina08 , 10/2/10 12:48 PM

loss is a loss, STOMACH PUNCH to all Rafans haha. Where is the improved serves? He is still struggling at H/C deal with it.
