  • U.S. Open quarterfinal expert picks - Part II

    2010-09-09 04:15:32

Expert picks are back for the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Part 2 features two Spaniards and a pair of unexpected quarterfinalists; Rafael Nadal vs. Fernando Verdasco and Mikhail Youzhny vs. Stanislas Wawrinka. Join in the fun for a chance to be a guest expert for part 2 of the quarterfinals or later in the tournament!

    (1) Rafael Nadal vs. (8) Fernando Verdasco

Ricky: Nadal is in absolutely ridiculous form, something I have never seen before on a hard court. Even the "old" hard-court Nadal would handle Verdasco with relative ease; the "new" hard-court Nadal should blow his fellow Spaniard out of the water. Verdasco's win over David Ferrer was epic, but he won't have much left for the quarters. That's an especially bad recipe when you are playing Nadal. Nadal 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

Cheryl: The odds are simply stacked against Verdasco in this matchup. First, Nadal and Verdasco have played 10 times -- Verdasco has won exactly three sets in all 10 of those matches and he certainly has never posted an actual win. Added to that, Verdasco comes into the match off a 4.5 hour barnstormer of a match over Ferrer. With Nadal playing so well and having been so solid mentally, I'd be surprised if Verdasco won so much as a set. Nadal 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Kelli: Nadal has never lost to Verdasco, and you'd be hard pressed to see this trend reversed at a Grand Slam. I think Verdasco will put up a fight, especially early on, but he doesn't have the consistency to pull off a big upset. Nadal may finally drop serve, but he won't lose this match. Nadal 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

    (12) Mikhail Youzhny vs. (25) Stanislas Wawrinka

Ricky: Youzhny wasn't exactly in stellar form heading into the U.S. Open, but the one-time semifinalist is back in business in New York. He navigated a relatively tough draw during week one, and now he is the beneficiary of Andy Murray's early exit. Wawrinka came up huge in wins over Murray and Sam Querrey, but he can't have much left. The Swiss is talented enough to hit his way to a set, but the rock-solid Youzhny is going to carve him up. Youzhny 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

Cheryl: Stan has been playing a ton this tournament, especially with that huge win over Murray in the third round. But he's hurt, and Youzhny is playing well also. I expect Stan to start off pretty well, but lose steam around the 90 minute mark. They have split previous wins at 2-2, but Wawrinka just had a tough five-setter against Querrey. Good run for Wawa, but the buck stops here. Youzhny 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Kelli: I thought the round of 16 was it for Wawrinka, who looked to be struggling quite a bit physically during his match against Querrey.  The Swiss No. 2 has turned in a terrific showing in New York, but I think he may be out of gas. A hard-court capable Youznhy is playing well and should move on to the final four with little trouble. Youzhny 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

Nadal easy over tired Verdasco
6-3 6-1 6-2

For Youzhny to have a chance of taking a set against Nadal in the semi, it has to be in straight sets:
7-6 6-4 6-4

bjawad , 9/9/10 9:42 AM

youzhny has the capability to beat nadal

it's so bloody arrogant they schedule the big matches at night time so europeans can't watch the matches!

but wawrinka and youzhny should be an entertaining match as well, two really elegant players!

croc , 9/9/10 10:27 AM

sorry guys out there for being so bloody arrogant!

anyway isn't tennis largely a sport for snobs in usa, europe, chile, argentina and australia... where in oz perhaps not so much only for snobs...

peace

croc , 9/9/10 11:42 AM

croc, I feel your pain, but now that the Labor Day week-end in the US is over, these great matches are scheduled at night so that the WORKERS in the NYCity area can come to them!

:) :)

What I don't get is how could the organizers book an unentertaining doubles match between washed out, has-been players at 7 in front of the Nadal-Verdasco match. Why make them wait another hour or so and play into the wee hours?

Also, since when was Kournikova worthy to return to play in an exhibition when she's never won a tournament? Why don't they just ask her to show up in a bikini cause that's the true allure of her being there!

She won a couple of grand slam tournaments in doubles with Hingis and she is a popular player so not totally undeserved

I won :)

Congrats on winning the picks, vrael!

grafight , 9/10/10 3:18 PM

i think overall for the quarterfinals (parts I and II, all 4 matches) vrael and bjawad tied, down to the correct # of sets won and lost. I haven't yet calculated it down to the # of games, but we might as well call it a tie!

RickyDimon , 9/10/10 3:43 PM

thnx grafight

vrael , 9/10/10 4:08 PM
