  • U.S. Open quarterfinal expert picks - Part I

    2010-09-08 07:18:46

Expert picks are back for the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Part 1 includes a pair of enticing clashes; Roger Federer vs. Robin Soderling and Novak Djokovic vs. Gael Monfils. Join in the fun for a chance to be a guest expert for part 2 of the quarterfinals or later in the tournament!

    (2) Roger Federer vs. (5) Robin Soderling

Ricky: "Nobody beats Soderling 11 times in a row." That's what Soderling said at the 2009 French Open when Federer extended his head-to-head dominance of the Swede to 10-0. Soderling was wrong, as Federer soon made it 12-0, but the world No. 5 finally got the best of Federer at this year's French. Still, there is a difference between beating Federer on clay and beating him on a fast hard court at the U.S. Open, where the Swiss is a five-time champion. Federer 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3.

Cheryl: No way Soderling wins this time. OK, he's playing better than he was at the beginning of the tournament, but the faster surface is going to see the Swede rushed too often. Plus, Federer isn't shanking the ball on every other point. Soderling MIGHT get a set, but he's not going to take three. Federer 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Kelli: Soderling had Federer's number at Roland Garros, but he won't enjoy a repeat performance at the US Open. On a faster surface, the Swiss carries a clear edge, having won six consecutive hard-court matches against the Swede. Power and a few errant groundstrokes from the five-time champion may afford Soderling a set, but no more than that. Federer 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.

    (3) Novak Djokovic vs. (17) Gael Monfils

Ricky: Monfils was terrible in his first-round win over Robert Kendrick, but he has been his typical entertaining self over the past three rounds. He can trouble Djokovic by getting ball after ball back in play, but the Frenchman does especially well against players who are off their game. That was the case for Djokovic heading into the U.S. Open, but the Serb is now on fire having blown out James Blake and--far more impressively--Mardy Fish. Djokovic should have too much power from the baseline in this one. Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

Cheryl: I can't imagine picking against Nole in this one. Sure, Monfils can track a bunch of balls down, but Djokovic is 4-0 against him, which is evidence that the Serb's pace of shot will eventually beat out Monfils' retrieving. There is a chance that the Frenchman will take a set, if for no other reason than that Djokovic's serve can be shaky at times. Nole through to the semifinals. Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Kelli: After a really rough beginning to the tournament, Djokovic seems to have his game in place. He leads this head-to-head 4-0 with three hard-court victories. Monfils is a gifted athlete, and his natural ability might earn him one set. A steadier, more experienced Djokovic should move into another Grand Slam semifinal. Djokovic 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Federer in 3.

Soderling has looked impressive so far because he generally had a soft draw, he hasn't played anyone really substantial, and that includes De Bakker, who may be good one day but he isn't yet. I think Roger will beat him in straight sets, probably one going to 7.5 or a tie-break, because Federer himself hasn't really been tested so it's hard to know where his form is.

Djokovic in 4 or 5

Monfils is a difficult player, even though is game is very defensive, he is so good at it that it's not easy to swat him away. The only way Djokovic could take control of the match is to impose his game on Monfils, but Djokovic tends to play everyone at their own game, so he might have to work hard to get passed Gael. Monfils tends to run out of steam, surprise, surprise, so if the match goes to 5 sets, he'll be done towards the end.

I'm surprised that the experts have soda winning a tiebreak against the fed on the us hard courts. Fed in 3 (7-6, 7-5, 6-3)

If djoker shows up awake, Djok in 4 (7-5, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4)

Soderling is playing well(serving very quick)..Fed need to play a tactical game (which he hardly do)..If Fed play with a good plan, Fed in 4.

If Fed fails to play as per the plan and starts making the error then we can see Sod pulling it off.

Djoker playing well there should not be much trouble for him to win this won in 4..

Federer in 5
Monfils in 5 - I can't get Novak's French Open quarterfinal loss out of my head. Hope he proves me wrong.

Ice , 9/8/10 5:58 PM

Im going to be bold and perhaps totally irrational here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sod in 5; Monfils in 5!!!

Monalysa , 9/8/10 6:10 PM

Monalysa,

Why irratiional? Robin is a formidable top 5 player and he has huge serve and powerful ground strokes at both wings. Enough to keep Roger off balance. If Roger has a problem covering the slowest court at RG due to powerful play of Robin, then imagine how Roger can survive much faster skidding balls.

Come on Robin, do it nice and good.

Expert Picks: Nadal vs. Verdasco, Youzhny vs. Wawrinka - http://tiny.cc/n2e2o

smr - you won, email me to pick either the second day of quarterfinals or the semis, if you want to

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 5:55 AM

Thanks Ricky ... bit of a thrill to win.
You know I find if I make predictions ... I don't enjoy the match the way I would if I hadn't. I'm too involved with numbers of sets etc.
I usually just like to choose who I think will win rather than score lines.
Although, I thoroughly enjoy all your expert picks.

smr , 9/9/10 6:16 AM

actually your failure to pick the exact scores should have disqualified you :-)

RickyDimon , 9/9/10 6:38 AM

Perhaps my disqualification can become someone elses win? :)
