  • Expert picks: Cincinnati third round

    2010-08-19 05:26:42

With the U.S. Open just two weeks away, it's time for the return of Tennistalk's expert picks in preparation for the final Grand Slam of 2010. And what better way to start than with the third round of the Cincinnati Masters, as a host of blockbuster matchups are on Thursday's schedule.

    (4) Andy Murray vs. Ernests Gulbis

Ricky: An ankle injury at the French Open halted the biggest hot streak of Gulbis' career, but the 21-year-old Latvian is still playing relatively well. Murray triumphed in Toronto and while he might tire out in Cincinnati, it probably won't come against Gulbis. Murray 7-6(4), 6-3.

    Cheryl
: Ooooh, this could be a good one. The Murray that beat Feds and Nadal in Toronto was nowhere to be found on Wednesday. I think Gulbis is going to press him hard. The Latvian for the upset win. Gulbis 3-6, 7-5, 6-2.

    (2) Novak Djokovic vs. David Nalbandian

Ricky: This looks like a 50-50 showdown with Nalbandian still borderline on fire and Djokovic having reached the Rogers Cup semifinals. The fact that they are playing in the heat of the day at 2:00 on Thursday could tip the scale in Nalbandian's favor if Djokovic runs into any breathing problems. Nalbandian 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Cheryl: This is another interesting match, though it's interesting because neither guy is playing all that well. Nalbs was down a break when Isner had to retire on Wednesday. And Djokovic has just been off. I'm calling Nole on this one, mostly because Nalby looked tired to me. Djokovic 6-4, 6-4.

    (7) Marcos Baghdatis vs. Tomas Berdych

Ricky: Berdych is one of the hottest players on tour right now and who knows how far he could have progressed in Toronto had he finished off Roger Federer in the quarters. Baghdatis is also in fine form and is dangerous on fast hard courts, but Berdych is on too much of a roll. Berdych 6-4, 7-6(5).

Cheryl: I think this one might be the easiest pick of the bunch. Baghdatis has won two matches this week, but he's had to work awfully hard to do it and Berdych has looked pretty solid. The Czech through in straights. Berdych 7-5, 6-3.

    (6) Nikolay Davydenko vs. (10) David Ferrer

    Ricky
: Back in the day of the "Big 3" (Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic), Davydenko and Ferrer spent several seasons battling it out for the No. 4 spot in the world. That's no longer the case, but they have taken turns playing unreal tennis (Davydenko last fall, Ferrer this spring). The quality won't be quite as good on Thursday, but if nothing else, it should be a baseline thriller. Ferrer 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Cheryl: Davydenko has not been himself for most of 2010. While at his peak he's a better hard-court player, the Russian ISN'T at his peak. Ferrer can hold his own on hards too. Ferrer 6-3, 6-4.

    (5) Robin Soderling vs. (9) Andy Roddick

Ricky: Roddick has been dealing with mono and he somehow lost a set to Sergiy Stakhovsky, but he beat Thiemo De Bakker in straights on Wednesday and looked really excited about the effort. Soderling did well to beat Lleyton Hewitt in three, but Roddick's ability to win free points on serve could be the difference. Roddick 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5.

    Cheryl
: THIS is the matchup of the day. Soderling has looked a touch shaky this week, but Roddick's game is one that doesn't give Sod so much difficulty. Roddick beat Soderling in three in Indian Wells; I think the Swede gets revenge on Thursday. Soderling 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-2.

i agree with all of cheryl's picks!

Why have Rafa and Fed been left off the picks?

nadline , 8/19/10 12:20 PM

Ferrer over Davydenko : 6-4 2-6 6-3

nadline - because their matches arent going to be competitive

vamosrafa - WHAT is your Gulbis-Murray score?!?!?!

RickyDimon , 8/19/10 3:32 PM

Rafa and Roger will go forward in straights... those are the easy picks.
Since it doesn't cost money (at least here in the forum) I will place my "bets"

Murray d Gulbis 6-4 6-3
Nole d Gordo 6-3 6-1
Ferrer d Davy 6-4 3-6 7-6
Roddick d Sod 6-2 4-6 6-3
Berdy d Baggy 7-5 6-3

As far as Fed and Rafa they'll both go forward in straights

grafight , 8/19/10 3:33 PM

Gulbis 6-4 7-5
Nalbandian 7-5 3-6 6-4
Ferrer 6-4 7-5
Berdych 6-4 7-5
Soderling 6-4 7-6(2)

tj600 , 8/19/10 4:42 PM

oops it is 6-7 6-3 6-4 muzz

vamosrafa , 8/19/10 6:15 PM

They're both only getting 45% lst serves. Problem is Andy's 2nd serve is also dismal - he has only won 4 points from it. Is this an upset in the making?

ed251137 , 8/19/10 7:01 PM

If Gulbis wins this, I'm going to make Ricky call me "her royal highness" all day Friday. :D

cherylmurray , 8/19/10 7:36 PM

why? even if i lose this match, i will STILL win the day overall as Nalbandian and Roddick will win.

if i lose this match AND lose the day overall, THEN i will call u that

RickyDimon , 8/19/10 7:45 PM

Nalbandian is not going to win. Roddick might, but I wouldn't bet dinner on it.

And Gulbis IS going to win this match.

cherylmurray , 8/19/10 7:53 PM

Ricky are you absolutely sure Nalbandian will win, and cheryl, aren't you counting you chickens too early?

nadline , 8/19/10 8:36 PM

Federer has now had two walk-overs as Khols has pulled out with a shoulder injury. How lucky can you get?

nadline , 8/19/10 9:32 PM

Fortunately, Ricky and I were both wrong. When he's right he's quite insufferable. :D

cherylmurray , 8/19/10 10:06 PM

this is almost pain to watch ..yes i am talking abt rafa's mach. he is totally out of sorts and playing pathetic, he aint gona be any force this week.

vamosrafa , 8/19/10 10:39 PM

Rafa has blisters on his feet apparently.

VAMOS!

nadline , 8/19/10 11:06 PM

Rafa wins the 2nd set, but still not firing on all cylinders.

VAMOS!

nadline , 8/19/10 11:23 PM

Yeah, he has blisters because the court is so hot and slippery. Everyone's feet are sliding around on it.

cherylmurray , 8/20/10 12:44 AM

Cheryl, I had to stop watching in the second set. I'm glad Rafa got the job done in the third. Let's see how everyone else does.

grafight , 8/20/10 12:50 AM

Ricky edged Cheryl for the 3rd round, lets c what is up for Quarters.

sabs , 8/20/10 7:09 AM

Friday:

Fish over Murray 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3

Roddick over Djokovic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4

Baghdatis over Nadal 7-6(5), 7-5

Federer over Davydenko 7-5, 6-3

RickyDimon , 8/20/10 6:23 PM

Great picks Ricky because I worry whenever you pick Nadal to win.

VAMOS!

nadline , 8/20/10 6:35 PM

LOL! This is the best pick ever!

Gulbis 6-4 7-5
Nalbandian 7-5 3-6 6-4
Ferrer 6-4 7-5
Berdych 6-4 7-5
Soderling 6-4 7-6(2) tj600 , 8/19/10 4:42 PM

phoenix , 8/20/10 6:44 PM

tj600 missed ALL FIVE!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!

RickyDimon , 8/20/10 6:52 PM

We seem to be heading for a tie break. At the moment the stats for Andy are marginally in his favour.

ed251137 , 8/20/10 7:12 PM

got all four right!!!!

RickyDimon , 8/21/10 4:44 AM

Congrats Ricky. AT LAST, you got it right. :-)

Still don't agree with you about Rafa in the US Open though. Despite the QF loss, I still have faith that he will peak just in time.

phoenix , 8/21/10 5:40 AM

phoenix - just admit it: I was right about Nadal!
