    2010-07-15 05:22:27

As the tennis—and entire sports—world knows, John Isner beat Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 at Wimbledon in the longest match in professional tennis history. They also won the ESPY award for Best Record-Breaking Performance of the past year. Let’s crunch some of the numbers and remember some of the quotes from the historic match.

    Quotes

“Really can’t belive the match that took place.” – Andy Roddick

“I'm going to tell you guys this because he (Isner) probably wouldn't: his toes were just torched. I mean, they looked like deli meat. They're disgusting.” – Roddick, after bringing Isner a dinner buffet following the match.

“John Isner is my hero.” – Bryan Brothers

“16‑14 is nothing anymore.” – Thiemo De Bakker, who beat Isner in the second round after winning his own first-round match 16-14 in the fifth.

“70‑68, I mean, it's pretty sick. When you're watching live score, you see the results. Then you see 70‑68. I think if people at home who didn't know it, watching it, I mean, they'll probably think it's a mistake or anything. It's unbelievable.” – De Bakker

“It’s just very difficult to describe. This will never be matched again. It will never happen again unless they play next year maybe.” – Andy Murray

“Was amazing match. Just congratulate both of players because they did something amazing. They make history.” – Rafael Nadal

“I love this. This is unheard of in our game. I don't know if I was crying or laughing. I have almost no words anymore watching this. It was too much.” – Roger Federer

“I think this is like a once‑in‑a‑lifetime thing. This is the first time this has happened in hundreds of years, clearly. Maybe it will take another couple hundred years to happen again.” – Serena Williams

“They’ve created some crazy news around the world. Even for people that don't have any interest in tennis, I think they read about it and see it and think how amazing it is. It's wonderful for our sport.”  - Maria Sharapova

“Nothing like this will ever happen again. Ever.” – Isner, after play was suspended at 59-59.

“We played the greatest match ever in the greatest place to play tennis.” – Mahut

“I really thought it was a dream.” – Isner

I would give anything to be able to say for the rest of my life "I was there". Thank goodness I was able to follow most of it on TV. It was a surreal seven hours for spectators, whatever must it have been like to be one of the protaganists!
