Wimbledon expert picks are on their second to last stop as the semifinals are on tap for Friday afternoon. Join the experts--including guests vamosrafa and vmk1--for a chance to be the guest picker for Sunday's title match.
(2) Rafael Nadal vs. (4) Andy Murray
Ricky: Upsets wreaked havoc in the top half of the draw, but this is one semifinal that everyone anticipated when the draw came out two weeks ago. Nadal decimated Murray in their only previous Wimbledon encounter (2008), but Murray handled Nadal with relative ease in this year's Australian Open quarters. Expect this blockbuster to be in between those two extremes, resulting in what should be one of the best matches of the tournament. Nadal is coming off an impressive win over Robin Soderling and Murray has dropped only one set in five matches. The Scot might have an edge in a hard-court match, but the grass and Nadal's experience of having reached three Wimbledon finals should make the difference. Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5.
Cheryl: This could be a fantastic match; of course that's what we thought the last time they played at Wimbledon and Nadal creamed Murray. Generally speaking, Nadal is a better grass-court player than Murray is and though this match could go either way, I'm inclined to give Rafa the slight nod especially after he beat Soderling on Wednesday. Murray's serve means everything in this match. If the Scot serves about about 60%, he'll get to his first ever Wimbledon final...but if he shows Nadal too many second serves, it's going to be another semifinal for the Spaniard. Nadal 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 8-6.
Cheryl: This match may just come down to experience. Berdych just doesn't have the experience in these huge-match situations. Yes, he defeated Federer, but that wasn't Roger at his best. I think Berdych is going to make this difficult on Djokovic, but I expect the Serb to come out on top in the end. Djokovic 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2.
vamosrafa: When the draws came out, barely anyone would have thought these two would be able to navigate their ways into the last four in such emphatic fashion. Berdych overcame all odds to become only the second man in seven years to beat Federer at Wimbledon. Djokovic has not lost a set in two previous meetings with Berdych, but this is a new version of Berdych , a version that has at last learned to fulfill its enormous potential. Djokvic is more lethal in the return of serve than Federer, so look for Berdych to face more obstacles in his service games. Both have a good chance of reaching a first-ever Wimbledon final, but a slightly more versatile game, a better return of serve, and better defensive skills will provide the edge to Djokovic. Djokovic 7-5 4-6 7-6 6-4.
vmk1: Djokovic has done well to reach the semis of his least preferred slam, but this is where I believe the journey ends as Berdych is just coming off the second biggest Grand Slam upset of the decade. The match should be competitive initially, but Berdych should upstage Djokovic to earn a spot in his first Grand Slam final. Berdych 6-4 6-7(4) 6-3 6-4.

mriiidula , 7/2/10 8:10 AM
for the berdych djokoboy match,
i want djokoboy to win..
but the current trend says berdych..
'coz this year the person who defeated the defending champ in the two slams so far at the QF stage has gone onto finish as runner up..
So, for the sake of picks i'll say..
berdych 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 (I wish i'm wrong..)
as for murray nadal..
nadal 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3
clayking , 7/2/10 8:32 AM
Nadal 6-3, 6-3, 6,2
Nole 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Nole will try to finish it 3 because of his breathing problem.
Raindrops , 7/2/10 8:46 AM
Rafa 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5
Nole 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4

rafael: 6-4,3-6,7-6,4-6,9-7
nole: 6-3,7-6,3-6,6-2
vrael , 7/2/10 10:40 AM
Ricky, why the change of heart, because you picked Murray to make the finals right from the start, and if Rafa wasn't supposed to beat Soderling, whom Murray was supposed to beat to get to the SF, how on earth is Rafa expected to beat Murray? I'm confused.
nadline , 7/2/10 10:42 AM
Nadal 6-4 6-3 7-5 (Sorry Deuce)
Berdych 4-6 6-3 7-5 6-4
remi , 7/2/10 10:42 AM
Good one nadline. Personally, and based on Ricky's track record, I would have preferred him picking Andy over Rafa. :-)
phoenix , 7/2/10 10:52 AM
Nadal 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
Djokovic 6-7, 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3
smr , 7/2/10 11:05 AM
Nadal 7-5 4-6 6-3 7-6
Berdych 7-6 6-4 2-6 6-3
Sanela , 7/2/10 11:35 AM
wow, nadal has a 100% record ! no one has picked muzza here so far.
vamosrafa , 7/2/10 11:42 AM
Now I would like to see Djoker against Murray (i.e A new Wimbledon champ for sure).
But it looks like it will be
Nadal in 5.
Djoker in 4.
Nadal and Murray is the one to enjoy....

I too was hoping that Ricky would stick to his guns.

Djokovic 7-5 6-4 6-2
Rafa 4-6 7-6 4-6 6-2 7-5
altho the rafa-muzz semi will be tight, i think the first semi will be a better match in terms of shot making.
stu , 7/2/10 12:58 PM
so ricky dimon has picked nadal?
ok so now its 100% guaranteed nadal will lose.
my prediction:
murray will win 6-2 6-1 3-0 ret.
attackingtennisrulez , 7/2/10 1:06 PM
hahah ATR is great, now i am sure nadal is gona win :D whe ATR picks rafa to win then i would be worried :P
vamosrafa , 7/2/10 1:10 PM
It's on the big stage that the big boys come out to play. Murray and Djokovic have both suddenly started playing with a fire that has been absent for most of the season. Murray is gonna take it to Nadal, and Berdych is going to hit a brick wall in the form of Novak's defensive skills.
Murray in 5
Djokovic in 4
Topspin , 7/2/10 1:23 PM
Wow, Ricky getting roasted here. You guys are brutal. :D
cherylmurray , 7/2/10 1:59 PM
anticipated, yes
predicted, no
and of course my opinion of Nadal's level has changed. I picked him to lose to Soderling and he BEAT Soderling, so why would I NOT think better of Nadal now than I did before the tournament?
RickyDimon , 7/2/10 2:00 PM
because everytime u pick nadal to win, he loses.
ur like that sean randell guy from tennis-x.com
useless at predictions.
like a jinx.
attackingtennisrulez , 7/2/10 2:03 PM
ricky is nothing like randell!!!! can't stand that guy.
homos , 7/2/10 2:33 PM
im surprised so many ppl think rafael's gonna win today.....
vrael , 7/2/10 2:41 PM
murray
6-4,7-5,6-7,7-6
saxenanalin , 7/2/10 2:46 PM
ferocious from berdych!
vrael , 7/2/10 2:47 PM
Nole having trouble today...but that was a good hold.
cherylmurray , 7/2/10 2:48 PM
Carlos Ramos being tough today. Gives Berdych a time delay warning. Good thing for Rafa that he's not officiating THAT match.
cherylmurray , 7/2/10 2:57 PM
i picked Nole to lose in the 1st set. oh no did i jinx him? :-(
phoenix , 7/2/10 3:10 PM
i hate carlos ramos. ihate cederic mourier too.
best umpires are the 2 american umpires, cant remember their names.
attackingtennisrulez , 7/2/10 3:27 PM
I don't think Murray will play his normal defensive game, he'll be coming to the net a lot, and playing lots of drop shots.
nadline , 7/2/10 4:16 PM
My picks:
Berdych 6-3 7-6 6-3
Murray 6-4 7-6 7-5
bjawad , 7/2/10 4:29 PM
bjawad: having just seen the first match and looked at your prdiction...why I live in hope!
deuce , 7/2/10 4:38 PM
The last picker is a cheat.
phoenix , 7/2/10 4:40 PM
So, the trend continues from AO 2010 and FO 2010..
the guy who beats the defending champ in QF reaches the final..
And so far, loses in the final..
clayking , 7/2/10 4:59 PM
My picks:
Berdych 6-3 7-6 6-3
Murray 6-4 7-6 7-5
bjawad, 7/2/10 4:29 PM
Goodness Jawad, if you didn't let your revenge agenda ruled you and chose Nadal then you must be the guestpicker. You're the closest I think.
Raindrops , 7/2/10 8:17 PM
Rain, he cheated and posted his picks after the Berdych win.
phoenix , 7/2/10 8:23 PM
Remi won
Remi, whats your email?
RickyDimon , 7/3/10 2:24 AM
phoenix, too bad some posters don't realize the comments are time-stamped.
Vamos Rafa!!

mara,
not only are the comments time-stamped, there are also nerdy Rafans (like me) who checked on the thread after every set to see who got it right. :-)
phoenix , 7/3/10 8:36 AM
where's the expert's picks for the finals? has Ricky given up already? i so hoped he choose berdych. :-)
phoenix , 7/3/10 1:59 PM
they will be up today. And why would i give up? I am WINNING the expert picks. I had Nadal AND Berdych!
RickyDimon , 7/3/10 6:20 PM
hehehe. yes Ricky, i realized too late that you've got it right THIS TIME. :-)

the last 3 years have clearly given us one trend. The AO is the cursed slam. Whoever wins AO has a horrible rest of the season.
atul1985 , 7/4/10 2:14 AM
and the parallel's between Federer's 2009 and Nadal's 2010 are striking
RickyDimon , 7/4/10 4:07 AM
well duh, of course my berdych prediction was meant as a joke!
bjawad , 7/4/10 11:33 AM
Nadal sud skip the AO 2011 and let federer win it again. :-)

EXCLUSIVE: Andy Murray ready to sack his coach after Wimbledon failure
By Malcolm Folley Last updated at 12:16 PM on 4th July 2010
Andy Murray's search for a major championship is likely to cost coach Miles Maclagan his job.
After Murray's failure to reach today's Wimbledon final, the British No 1 will review his future ahead of next month's US Open.
Maclagan, 35, was under pressure to retain his job even before Wimbledon.
But Murray's revival over the past fortnight may not save him.
His replacement could be Australian Darren Cahill, who shared success with Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi.
Cahill is under contract with adidas, who, through Simon Fuller's company, 19 Entertainment, signed Murray to a five-year $15million contract at the start of this year.
Maclagan joined Team Murray at the end of 2007 along with physical conditioner Jez Green, physiotherapist Andy Ireland and conditioning trainer Matt Little.
Andy Murray is desperate to win a major
Trophy hunter: Andy Murray is desperate to win a major
Before Wimbledon, Murray had been in a slump for much of the year since the Australian Open final against Roger Federer.
Recently he has been seen to express his frustration at Maclagan as matches slipped from his grasp.
Murray behaved the same way with previous coaches Mark Petchey and Brad Gilbert, who were both fired by him.
'Under the law of the tennis jungle, when results dry up, the main man around the player pays the price,' said an insider.
With Murray desperate to win a major, changing his coach is an option he will consider seriously, in consultation with his mother, Judy.
After his semi-final defeat by Rafael Nadal, Murray is not scheduled to play again until the Rogers Cup in Toronto on August 9, the start of his preparation for the US Open three weeks later.

nadline , 7/4/10 7:00 PM
Hi nadline: this is interesting, though Daily Mail is a v. unreliable source. They were also talking about it on TV. Apparently Andy can sorta use them anyway as they are under contract to 19. I actually think Andy needs someone whose been in the finals of slams, lost and then come through, to be his mentor. Agassi probably. Miles just doesn't have that hands on experience. Andy is such a prickly stubborn character that a new coach would have to be chosen most carefully. Remember Brad Gilbert? A disaster! I remember Andy mouthing f-----g t--t at him during a match. What a gr8 moment! Also look what Tod Martin did for Djko-nothing!
deuce , 7/4/10 9:05 PM
Im sorry but......
Coaches can only work to improve your game................but they CANNOT work to improve on your attitude and your own desire to win!!
Andy, ask Rafa and Roger!!
Monalysa , 7/5/10 10:05 PM
Monalysa: don't agree. In his corner Andy needs someone who has actually been in a grand slam final, like Agassi or johnnie mac, and someone who helped get him there, like Cahill. Someone to help sort out that second serve would be nice too! Too much is given away with negative body language. Miles has done wonders but it's a fine line between cosiness and complacency.
deuce , 7/6/10 8:28 AM
I don't think Cahill or Agassi would stand for any abuse directed at them by Andy, so if he does hire one of them he'll have to mind his language.
Just thought that Richard Williams might have a little time on his hands to help Murray out, look what he did with his two girls, and he had never even played tennis ever. If the Williams family had been British, Richard Williams would have been made a Knight by now in recognition of his contribution to British sport.
I've never understood how anyone can coach a player if they have never played themselves, but the proof is there, it can be done.
