Wimbledon expert picks are going full steam ahead with Wednesday's quarterfinals. Can Berdych beat Federer again? Who will win the Nadal-Soderling rematch of the rematch? Will YSL's dream run continue? Will Murray ever lose a set? The experts weigh in, and we hope the readers do too....
(1) Roger Federer vs. (12) Tomas Berdych
Ricky: Say it again with me--this is the NEW Tomas Berdych. Unfortunately for Berdych, he appears to be facing not OLD Roger Federer, but the Roger Federer of old. Fed was awful in rounds one and two, but he is pretty much on fire now. Berdych has the talent to pull it off and he should at least be competitive, but I don't think he is getting Federer at the right time. Federer 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Cheryl: This could be more difficult than people think for The Federer. Not for a moment do I believe that Berdych is going to beat Fed in a best of 5 match, but he might well take a couple of sets and make Roger really work for it. Federer 3-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
(2) Rafael Nadal vs. (6) Robin Soderling
Ricky: As everyone reading this knows, I picked Soderling to win this match when the draw came out. I felt better and better about it after week one, but Nadal's win over PHM and Soderling's struggles with David Ferrer throw a wrench into the equation. I'm not bailing on Soderling because I think he has too much powere for Nadal on grass, but all I can say is that he better hope his opponent is not at 100 percent. Soderling 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(6), 6-4, 8-6.
Cheryl: This rivalry is almost reaching Fed-Rafa proportions...or it would if Soderling were more popular. This is going to be killer for Nadal. The one bit of good news is that Ferrer pressed Soderling in the 4th round and the Swede could be a tad tired. I still think Nadal can win it, but it won't be easy. Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6(9), 6-2.
(3) Novak Djokovic vs. Yen-Hsun Lu
Ricky: What an amazing tournament for Rendy, who had lost in the first round of his last five Grand Slam tournaments. This really came out of nowhere, and while he took advantage of a kind draw during the first week, he delivered something special to upset Andy Roddick. Another stunner over Djokovic is too much to ask, although it is not out the question if Djoker runs into breathing difficulty. Djokovic 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Cheryl: This was supposed to be Djokovic/Roddick, but now the Serb gets to play Yen-Hsun Lu instead. Lu played magnificently against Roddick, but I don't see him with two huge upsets in a row. Lu might nab a set, but this Nole should make his second Wimbledon semifinal. Djokovic 6-2, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
(4) Andy Murray vs. (10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Ricky: Tsonga has done well to reach his first Wimbledon quarterfinal, but let's not anoint him as some kind of grass-court king. He had only been to the fourth round once before and he hasn't had to play anyone yet (no disrespect to Dolgo and Julien). Murray will be a rude awakening for someone has faced three unseeded players and the No. 32 seed. The Scot, meanwhile, has not dropped a single set. He won't drop more than one--at most--on Wednesday. Murray 6-4, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2.
Cheryl: Another match that won't be as easy as it looks. Muzza is certainly the favorite. Tsonga is not exactly known as a grass-courter...then again, neither was Nadal. The Frenchman has played great so far and could make life difficult for the crowd favorite...then again, Murray has been playing great tennis too - and he'll have the crowd behind him. I'm calling for all 4 top seeds to get through to the semis. Murray 4-6, 7-6(5), 7-5, 6-3.

Rajat - well you are in luck: the good news is that people here are smart enough to figure that out.
Picking the winner and the amount of sets actually means something.
Picking the exact scores is just fun. We have fun here.

vamosrafa , 6/30/10 11:42 AM
all predictions are according to ranking except for seethelies, sabs, missyRF, bjawad, champ, and saxe. why do i get the feeling that these are all fedlovers?
phoenix , 6/30/10 12:13 PM
phoenix,
The final I would love to see is Fed-Nadal , but the problem is not that they are not playing their best, but the issue with Nadal is his Knees , which may cause him lose the otherwise I can't think Sod beating nadal in a best of 5 set match(100% or even 95% fit nadal).
champ00289 , 6/30/10 12:35 PM
Ricky,
Do you feel Fed take undue advantage of being a champion that he always plays on center court. What I have heard is that Fed has played on court1 (outside center court) for the first time since 2007 or 2008.
Todays match that should have played on center court was Rafa and Sod.
It seems fine that Murray is home favourite and thats why he alse get the chance to play on Center court.
champ00289 , 6/30/10 12:58 PM
Federer 7-6(5) 4-6 7-5 3-6 6-2
Soderling 6-4 3-6 7-5 7-6(4)
Tsonga 7-5 4-6 6-3 7-6(5)
Djokovic 6-2 6-4 6-3
tj600 , 6/30/10 1:03 PM
Federer in 3: 6-4 6-3 7-5
Nadal in 4: 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3
Murray in 3: 7-5 6-4 6-2
Djokovic in 3: 6-2 6-4 7-5
pigirl1 , 6/30/10 1:50 PM
champ - Federer played on court 1 last week. He doesn't always play on centre court.
cherylmurray , 6/30/10 1:52 PM
Ricky:
I'm not bailing on Soderling because I think he has too much powere for Nadal on grass, but all I can say is that he better hope his opponent is not at 100 percent. Soderling 6-3, 3-6, 6-7(6), 6-4, 8-6.
Your prediction seems more like a hope than an expectation.
nadline , 6/30/10 1:52 PM
It's funny how all the Fedfans choose Sod over Nadal, and most of the Nadal fans choose Berdych over Fed; seems like some Rafans are a little bit more objective.
nadline , 6/30/10 1:57 PM
If it goes 5 sets, Rafa will win it. If Soderling wins this match it'll be in 4, not 5. I'm fairly certain of it.
Darren Cahill and Patrick McEnroe just predicted that both Federer AND Nadal will lose today. I think they're nuts.
cherylmurray , 6/30/10 1:58 PM
yea cheryl, cahill and patrick have been making crazy picks ! and i totally agree with your say on the nadal-soderling.
vamosrafa , 6/30/10 2:15 PM
off topic so sorry for that..
clayking, vrael and all members of the indo-pak members, i hope u guys are following the progress of the indo-pak duo (aisam-rohan) ..they are into the qtr finals , really happy for them :)

oztennisfan , 6/30/10 2:40 PM

BRING ON THE MATCHES, the long "wait" is killing me!
Vamos Rafa !!!
Raindrops , 6/30/10 2:54 PM
vamosrafa,
I wish they will make it to Semis..But melzer and Petzschner played a good last match..
Comon Guys go for another win , without taking any pressure on yourselg.
champ00289 , 6/30/10 2:58 PM
yup champ, i really hope do win another one. the bryans are the most likely next opponents but even a semi final would be FANTSTIC result for both.
vamosrafa , 6/30/10 3:03 PM

Fed in 4: 6-4,3-6,7-5,6-2

vrael , 6/30/10 3:14 PM
Of course vamos..
I'm..
specially since both paes n bhupati are out of men's doubles..
clayking , 6/30/10 3:25 PM
Cahill and McEnroe probably aren't chumps after all - considering the trends set by the first set in the Sod-Nadal match.
samprallica , 6/30/10 5:07 PM
vamos, vrael and fellow friends from Indo-Pak
Bopanna-Qureshi are on their way out..
however they will be in top 40 as a result of their great performance..
clayking , 6/30/10 5:23 PM
good to see these 2 coming far at wimby CK........hopefully they will win a gs at some pt in their careers....
vrael , 6/30/10 5:28 PM
vrael,
Both are 30..It seems tough for them to get it after 5 years(If they keep on Playing togher).
champ00289 , 6/30/10 5:45 PM
So Ricky, bad day at the Bookies then.
nadline , 6/30/10 7:21 PM
@Cheryl: This rivalry is almost reaching Fed-Rafa proportions........
Are you serious? This rivalry was vamped up just because Sod beat Rafa at RG and the WTF when Rafa was at his lowest physically and emotionally. I'm glad he's put Sod back in his place.
VAMOS!
nadline , 6/30/10 7:25 PM
"all predictions are according to ranking except for seethelies, sabs, missyRF, bjawad, champ, and saxe. why do i get the feeling that these are all fedlovers?"
Not only are these guys wrong in predicting Sod over Rafa, all of them got it wrong in Fed over Berdych too. That's what you get when you let your emotions (wishes?) get the better of you. :-)
phoenix , 6/30/10 7:28 PM
I wanted Berdych to beat Federer and was cheering for him the whole match. I just picked Federer to win here because I was afraid he would.
ts38 , 6/30/10 7:39 PM
Ricky choking at the big moment. :( Only 2 for 4 today....
:D
Federer will be ranked No. 3 after Wimbledon
cherylmurray , 6/30/10 7:42 PM
looks like vmk1 is our next guest picker!!
clayking , 6/30/10 7:45 PM
Isn't this the first time ever that Djokovic is ranked above Federer?
stu , 6/30/10 8:13 PM
i sucked at these predictions, but i am not unhappy with the results. all my top 3 favorites (Rafa, Nole, AndyM) are in the semis. i so wished Rafa to take the trophy though.
phoenix , 6/30/10 8:16 PM
stu - yes, it is. And it's the first time Federer won't be top 2 since like 2003.
cherylmurray , 6/30/10 8:19 PM
Wow am i really the guest picker. Guess that Berdych hunch took me over the line. Vamos
Shall I send you the predictions Ricky?
vmk1 , 6/30/10 8:43 PM
where is bjawad "nadal to retire' ahahahahaahha pity such guys
and congrats to nole for the no.2 rank he deserves it.
@clayking, vrael, champ yea it was a good run and lets hope they make better runs in the future :)
vamosrafa , 6/30/10 8:45 PM
Wow am i really the guest picker. Guess that Berdych hunch took me over the line. Vamos
Shall I send you the predictions Ricky?
vmk1 , 6/30/10 8:47 PM

vamosrafa , 6/30/10 8:50 PM

vmk1 , 6/30/10 8:58 PM
can't . wait . for . the . semis!
stu , 6/30/10 9:02 PM
Where is Ricky?
Busy washing off all those pies from his face. :-)
phoenix , 6/30/10 9:06 PM
"""Where is Ricky?""""
You were all wrong, Ricky is yet aware about the outcome of QFs because he still at the cornfields buying sacks of corn to consume during the Semifinals. Wasn't he told us to get our popcorn ready for Soderling/Murray match? HOW CAN YOU FORGET THAT? Duh !!!
Raindrops , 6/30/10 9:18 PM
lol, guys leave ricky alone. he is nt the only journalist to predict a soderling win , cahill gibert and i have read 2-3 more editors making the same pick so its okay.
vamosrafa , 6/30/10 9:18 PM
vmk1,
Leave Ricky alone if you want to get invited as guestpicker or else you'll end up a woodpicker lolz lolz lolz.
Raindrops , 6/30/10 9:26 PM
oh yes. thanks for reminding me Rain. i forgot all about the popcorn.
vamos, also that guy in the wimbledon site as it happens, drew lilly something.
phoenix , 6/30/10 9:33 PM
Ha ha yeah but picking on Ricky is more fun than being a guest picker!! He he :)
Vamos Rafa! what a day!
vmk1 , 6/30/10 9:45 PM
i agree. let's pick on him 'til he comes out. what a day indeed. i'm so happy that i can't bring myself to gloat at the fedtards and get my revenge. :-)
phoenix , 6/30/10 9:59 PM
yeah I hope Ricky does the story on Rafa beating Soderling :)
vmk1 , 6/30/10 10:37 PM
let's be fair to RickyDimon, he did pick nadal in 5:
http://tinyurl.com/2chyppq
rfzr , 7/1/10 12:11 AM
Where are you, Ricky ??
oztennisfan , 7/1/10 3:00 AM
good point by rfzr. The truth comes out!!!!!
i haven't calculated today's picks, but i trust everyone that vmk1 won (and vamosrafa won round 4).
So, yes, vmk1 and vamosrafa send me paragraph of analysis and exact score for the two semifinal matchups. Thanks :-)
RickyDimon , 7/1/10 3:39 AM
Congratulations raindrops, vmk1 and and clayking for having the courage of your convictions to back Berdy. I was on the verge of picking him to win but my superstitious nature didn't want to jinx him.
But who would ever have predicted Berdy serving up a baguette to RF? That was the biggest surprise ever, especially as his own serve was quite erratic during the match.
ed251137 , 7/1/10 7:02 AM
Since I can't stop thinking about possible semifinal outcomes, here's my prediction
Semi1 - Djokovic 7-5 6-4 6-2
Semi2 - Rafa 4-6 7-6 4-6 6-2 7-5

Piece of advice/feedback: Writing about preview on a match is fine....and predicting the winner is also okay ... predicting the number of sets is far fetched but still admissible, but predicting the actual scorelines? And even with the number of points in a tie-breaker? That is taking the predictions a "little" too far. The previews would be better served without that.
