Expert picks are back for the second week of Wimbledon, beginning with the best round four has to offer. Join the fun and become a guest picker later in the tournament.
(1) Roger Federer vs. (16) Jurgen Melzer
Ricky "OK, OK, I admit I picked Mahut to win" Dimon: Melzer spent the first decade of his career losing in the third round of Grand Slams. Now he's made it to two straight. The veteran Austrian is tough to beat on grass due to his big serve and aggressive style. Federer, meanwhile, struggled in his first two matches. Unfortunately for Melzer, the world No. 2 picked up the pace against Arnaud Clement and I think that means it's full steam ahead for Federer. Federer 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 7-5.
Cheryl "the Mahut to Ricky's Isner" Murray: This could actually be more difficult than you would first think. Sure, Melzer is only ranked 16 to Federer's 2, but the Austrian has had a great year. In fact, he just made the semifinals at Roland Garros. Though he's had good success on clay this year, Melzer is still better on the quicker courts, generally speaking. Federer should come through, but Melzer will probably snag at least a set. Federer 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-3.
(2) Rafael Nadal vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu
Ricky: Nadal owns Mathieu; but then again, Federer owned Robin Soderling leading up to this year's French Open and we all saw how that turned out. Quite frankly, it would not be THAT big of a shock to see Mathieu do the same at Wimbledon. Nadal has been to five sets in two consecutive matches and the knee questions are back. PHM is playing his best tennis of the season, but I don't think he will have quite enough. Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5.
Cheryl: Mathieu has been playing the role of Nadal Pigeon for the past 8 years. Since 2003, Mathieu has played Nadal 9 times -- and he's lost 9 times. Mathieu did well to get past a quite tough 4-setter against Thiemo De Bakker, but beating Rafa on grass is a different matter altogether. Nadal has had a couple of 5-setters, but the Spaniard has been playing well. Nadal 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(7).
(3) Novak Djokovic vs. (15) Lleyton Hewitt
Ricky: Regardless of what the rankings and seedings say, this is just a horrific matchup for Djokovic on grass. It's his worst surface, and it is arguably Hewitt's best. Hewitt is a former Wimbledon champion, and that's something Djokovic can only dream about. Who knows, it might happen one day for the Serb, but it's not going to happen this year. Hewitt 6-3, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3.
Cheryl: This is going to be an upset on paper, but since Hewitt is a WAY better grass courter than Djokovic, it won't really be an upset in practice. Hewitt has been playing absolutely fantastic tennis over the past few weeks. Expect him to exploit Nole's poor movement on the grass. Hewitt 6-3. 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
(10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (32) Julien Benneteau
Ricky: Have any two players still alive in the draw made less noise than Tsonga and Benneteau? Tsonga scored a big five-set win over Aleksandr Dolgopolov, but in general both Frenchmen have simply taken advantage of favorable draws. Tsonga is coming off a win over...TOBIAS KAMKE!!!!!....and Benneteau is coming off a win over...FABIO FOGNINI!!!! Benneteau definitely has a chance in this one, but Tsonga's power should make the difference on grass. Tsonga 7-6(4), 4-6, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4.
Cheryl: Tsonga has actually been playing quite well at the All England Club. Benneteau is tricky on the quick surfaces, but Tsonga is more solid off the baseline. Tsonga 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-5.

RickyDimon , 6/28/10 10:52 PM
whats the deal with dissing Nole's grass court game? didn't he play that AWESOME match against Rafa at Queens? And reach the Wimby semis in 07? Sure he lost early to Safin (SAFIN) in 08 and Haas last year, but I would stop short of calling Hewitt "a WAY better grass courter".
I guess he showed you guys though. His game was leagues above leyley's today (barring set 3)
stu , 6/28/10 11:16 PM
re: "Nole's poor movement on grass"
from Hewitt himself: "He's able to hit a lot of winners out there, you know, on any surface and he moves extremely well."
stu , 6/28/10 11:23 PM
stu, that's exactly what i said, that there was no way nole was losing to hewitt; he is much more versatile and more complete player than llayton. i think it was a bit of a bandwagon thing once hewitt managed to beat roger in germany.
rfzr , 6/29/10 1:33 AM
It is a very long time since we have seen Djokovic playing like that. I would venture to say not since AO 2008. Health problems or not, he has suddenly reverted to that free-swinging, what the hell kind of tennis that propelled him to No.3 during 2007.
ed251137 , 6/29/10 2:17 AM
Well. That was interesting.

...so much for experts haha...
I told ya... Fed will go dawn in SF... Nole is best when everything is against him...
AJDE NOLEEEEE¨¨¨¨
..."way better player on grass...". "upset on paper..."
...then commentators "Novak doesn't dominate...it's just Hewitt making too much UE..." " He had nose operation..."about 20 time...
...and in same time every miss from Hewitt... comments are..."Aye,aye!!!","What a shame...", "Oh, he missed it for millimeters ..."
I mean he's No3 for 3 years... not to mention No2, because of Rafa's sickness ...
At the end of 2008 he was 10 points...TEN ATP POINTS behind No2 Fed...
He was only guy who was chasing Rafa thru clay season last year...
AND ALL THAT achieved with health problems... !!!
...and still he don't get attention that he more than deserve... so sad...so sad...
Nole is going to the finale this year... with Andy or Rafa... for me thats more than enough...never mind who will win!!!
zare , 6/29/10 5:40 PM
zare: I'm really really hoping Novak will beat Fed because then could Andy become Wimbledon Champ.........skipping hastily out of the way of a big slap from you......!
deuce , 6/29/10 7:21 PM
deuce, that is, if Andy gets past Rafa who needs to get past Robin. :-)
phoenix , 6/29/10 7:39 PM
yes phoenix, of course its all ifs and buts....but I can dream...
deuce , 6/29/10 7:43 PM
i just hope that you don't end up dreaming at the back of the sofa, deuce. really hoping. :-)
phoenix , 6/29/10 7:57 PM
zare, in a way...............i fell your pain!

Expert picks for quarter finals??
Ricky must be off playing baseball.
smr , 6/29/10 11:46 PM
Ok I'll start ... the top four seeds will go through. Yep, I know ... living on the edge. :)
smr , 6/30/10 12:35 AM
I think Sodahling gets thru in 5, and the usual suspects in the othet matches?
I hope Muzza vs Tsonga is competitive?if Muzza's gonna win this trophy he'd better be tested at least once before the final!
stu , 6/30/10 12:49 AM
I think sod will reach his third major final and suffer his third consecutive loss in a final.
seethetruth , 6/30/10 12:59 AM
its 5 am here and i cant wait more for the expert picks :) i will wake up late and then if ricky has put them up ill try to mail me picks ASAP :)
