  • Expert Picks: Federer vs. Soderling, Berdych vs, Youzhny

    2010-06-01 04:48:45

We're down to the quarterfinals and the expert picks are bigger and better than ever. Roger Federer, Robin Soderling, Tomas Berdych, and Mikhail Youzhny make up the Tuesday schedule.

    (1) Roger Federer vs. (5) Robin Soderling

Ricky "Bounce-back" Dimon: How many times in a row can't someone beat Soderling? First he said 10. Then after the French Open final he said 11. Now it's up to 12. So what is it? 13? 14? 15? 20? 50? 100? On Tuesday it's going to extend to 13, because Federer is not going to lose to Soderling. The world No. 1--as expected--is heating up after a few lackluster months and while Soderling has been on fire in Paris, he does not have the clay-court game to beat Federer. This won't be as bad as last year's title match because a quarterfinal is obviously a much smaller stage, but Federer will once again cruise. Federer 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-4.

Cheryl "Needs a miracle" Murray: LOL. Okay, fine...I shouldn't laugh at poor Robin...but goodness gracious, it's hard to argue against a 12-0 record. I mean, how many ways is Fed going to beat this poor guy? I admit that it's hard for me to even take it seriously. If the Sod is going to beat His Highness, it is surely not going to be on clay at a slam. I wouldn't expect Tuesday's match to be any more competitive than the last time they played at Roland Garros. Federer 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

"All hail" vrael: Roger is playing better than what he was playing like here last year in the initial rounds. He is more than capable of handling a hard, flat hitter like Soderling. I expect no surprises in this match. Federer 4-6,6-3,7-5,6-2.

    (11) Mikhail Youzhny vs. (15) Tomas Berdych

Ricky: The 11th--yes, eleventh--meeting between these guys should be a good one, as both are in remarkable form. Especially Berdych. A mental midget prior to this year, Berdych took out Federer in Miami and it has been full steam ahead for him ever since. He was nothing short of scary against both John Isner and Andy Murray. Youzhny has been rock-solid and he has done what I expected him to do when the draw came out: reach the quarters. I initially had him winning this match in my pre-tournament picks, but right now it is too tough to go against Berdych. Berdych 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-6(4).

Cheryl: This is a curious quarterfinal for RG. Neither Berdych nor Youzhny are traditional clay-courters, yet here they are and Ferrer and Ferrero are nowhere to be seen. Youz holds a slight head to head edge on Berdych (6-4), but they've only played on clay twice and they split those wins. I think Berdych is playing better tennis right now. He isn't necessarily a better clay-courter than Youzhny, but that doesn't seem to matter this year. Berdych 6-4, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

    vrael
: Berdych is striking the ball like a dream. Youzhny hasn't been tested in his previous match and Tomas is coming off a big victory over a Top 4 player in Murray. The Czech looks confident and should be able to finish this without much trouble. Berdych 6-3,4-6,7-5,6-4.

and vrael is the guest picker AGAIN. Will someone beat him?!??!?!?

RickyDimon , 6/1/10 5:10 AM

i hope not!!!

muhahahahahhaa!!!

vrael , 6/1/10 5:14 AM

Soderling in 4: 7/5 6/4 3/6 6/4

Reasoning - Soderling has has a harder draw than Roger and has played brilliantly. Roger hasnt played anyone that could test him and therefore come close to giving us any indication of how well he is actually doing.
I predict a shock loss!

Berdych in 4: 7/6 3/6 6/2 6/4

isabeau77 , 6/1/10 6:12 AM

i think...

fed: 7-6 4-6 7-5 6-3

berdych: 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4

homos , 6/1/10 6:16 AM

every body expected murray to win at aus open ..look what happened

federer will be 200% careful.. he won't give any chances for soderling..

it's super tough to win against federer..

chenna , 6/1/10 6:23 AM

SoBerling 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
Verdict 6-3, 6-2, 6-4

Raindrops , 6/1/10 7:03 AM

Heart says Soderling but mind says Federer 6-4 7-6(4) 6-2
Berdych 6-4 7-5 6-4

vmk1 , 6/1/10 7:14 AM

Chenna- Careful is what Roger cant be! Soderling will blast him off the court. Roger needs to play aggressive, free tennis to win.

isabeau77 , 6/1/10 7:39 AM

Federer 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6
Youzhny 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2

karalee , 6/1/10 7:49 AM

Here goes -

Fed 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5

Berdych 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

Nativenewyorker , 6/1/10 7:59 AM

Federer 6-1 7-5 6-2
Berdych 6-3 6-2 6-7(3) 6-4

ts38 , 6/1/10 8:10 AM

Soderling 64 36 76 64
Berdych 62 46 64 75

anand , 6/1/10 8:12 AM

Federer: 6-3 4-6 7-6 6-4
Berdych: 7-6 2-6 6-3 6-3

If the weather is gloomy then Federer can actually win in 3. Something makes me feel that this is not going to be a straight set affair at least

iMaFaN , 6/1/10 8:49 AM

Federer: 6-4 7-6(4) 7-5
Berdych 7-6(2) 6-3 4-6 6-2

On a sidenote,if it is windy, both Berdych and Soderling will go down, and it will be very ugly.(they both suc* in windy conditions)

tj600 , 6/1/10 9:52 AM

Unfortunately there is a strong risk these QFs will be interrupted by rain.

On balance one would expect this to work in favour of Federer and Berdych. ie. if either Soderling or Youzhny have won a set they will lose momentum if there is a rain break and their opponents will have time to regroup and raise their game.

ed251137 , 6/1/10 10:26 AM

Söderling in 5 and Berdych in 4

Maglor , 6/1/10 10:34 AM

i'm not officially participating in predictions..
heart says soda can and berdych (like vmk1)
mind says fed and youzhny (berdych is pretty fragile, while youzhny is a strong boy)

clayking , 6/1/10 11:08 AM

federer 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 11:20 AM

AidanZ , 6/1/10 11:44 AM

I am no expert but I am going to contradict your expert picks regarding the Fed - Sod match:P

Soderling in 3 simple sets: 7-6 6-2 6-2

eduardvalalex , 6/1/10 12:16 PM

hello Aidanz and eduardvalalex........just want to ask y are u predicting a sod win....u must have ur logical reasons!!!

vrael , 6/1/10 12:34 PM

of course i have my logical reasons. federer is playing sub par... soderling is playing above par. soderling made it last year through the finals. and sure he did not test federer then, but this year is going to be different simply because both of em are not playing the same tennis. it's a 65% federer vs a 150% soderling. and we know what soderling is capable of even when he's not 100%.

eduardvalalex , 6/1/10 1:01 PM

weldun vrael boy :P 2-time guest picker now :D

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 1:03 PM

"I am no expert" Ramara: The Sod beat Fed in an exhibition in January. I think that's the ONLY place he can beat him. Fed at a slam is a whole different Thing.

Fed in three

Berdych is starting to make a believer out of me, which probably means he's due for a let-down. Still:

Berdych in four

Ramara , 6/1/10 1:08 PM

fedex in 3 sets
6-3,7-6(5),7-5

saxenanalin , 6/1/10 1:31 PM

Fed in 3
7-5 7-6(2) 7-6(5)

Max , 6/1/10 1:35 PM

Fed in 3

6-4 7-5 6-2 ( Sod can win max. 11 games in IMO)!!

berdych vs Youzhny ... Berdych in 4 sets!

mani4Tennis , 6/1/10 1:47 PM

Fed 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-4,6-3

Berdy 6-7(5), 7-5,6-7(4),6-3,6-1

chr18 , 6/1/10 1:55 PM

Sod in 3...
Youzni in 3...

zare , 6/1/10 2:31 PM

...just wanted to be original:-)

zare , 6/1/10 2:33 PM

@VAMOSRAFA....ill try and get a hattrick atleast....lol..ill probably achieve that at queens...lol

:)

vrael , 6/1/10 3:21 PM

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 4:20 PM

vrael , 6/1/10 4:53 PM

LOL, u are my nearest challenger then ..LOL ,,,gota stop ur progress ! heheheh

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 5:05 PM

wow my prediction is going PERFECT

and soderling has given a blow to the experts here..lol.... nt sure why the experts were expecting a one-sided match !

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 5:15 PM

yep....i predicted fed in 4 too...and right now it looks probable!!!

vrael , 6/1/10 6:13 PM

You two ... vrael and vamosrafa ... have been hanging out with RD too much! Lol.

smr , 6/1/10 6:31 PM

CONGRATS to my fellow tennis fans who root for Soderling namely: isabeau77, anand, AidanZ, Maglor, eduardvalalex, zare.

Double SLAPS on your faces: chenna, maxi (10x), FIG, torres9 (20x), chr18 (15x), saxenanalin and most of all SPANK to big mouth Roger Federer.

Raindrops , 6/1/10 7:57 PM

Except for the first set, i was almost spot on.

Soderling in 3 simple sets: 7-6 6-2 6-2

eduardvalalex , 6/1/10 8:02 PM

anand is the closest.

Raindrops , 6/1/10 8:04 PM

Raindrops: I had a feeling Soderling would cause this upset.
I predicted: 7/5 6/4 3/6 6/4
Score: 6/3 3/6 7/5 6/4

(The sets are a bit jumbled, and one set should have been one game less, but boy I am shocked!)

isabeau77 , 6/1/10 8:05 PM

@smr....thts prepostorous...:)

caongrats eduardvalalex....aidanz and all those brave ppl who predict!!ed the upset!!!

vrael , 6/1/10 8:11 PM

Raindrops , 6/1/10 8:20 PM

@smr..LOL....
brave prediction ,all those who picked soderling welldone.

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 8:24 PM

I thought it would be a tough match, but I didn't expect this. Fed has always delivered the goods when there was something on the line. However, it would appear that Sod played some brilliant tennis today to beat him. I almost changed my pick of Fed to win in four sets to Sod in four or five, but I didn't have the guts. I had this weird feeling that Fed just might finally lose.

Congratulations to those who did follow through and showed smarts and courage by picking Sod for the win!

Nativenewyorker , 6/1/10 8:36 PM

Gratz to The Sod's supporters and condolences to the Fed fans. But amidst the mourning and the jubilation let's take a moment to salute the close of the greatest record in men's tennis: Roger Federer's streak of 23 consecutive semis or better appearances in grand slams. We shall not see its like again. It's one of the great records in all of sport.

Ramara , 6/1/10 8:36 PM

EXPERTS : ahem ahem :P cheryl "LOL. Okay, fine...I shouldn't laugh at poor Robin"
be careful next time you two :D ..i will post the scoreboard soon

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 8:45 PM

Ramara, true that record is astounding! I am still in shock that Federer lost ... I really thought Söderling had no chance.

smr , 6/1/10 8:49 PM

SOO much drama today , the rain interruptions and robin soderling SUMHOW knocking the great roger federer out of the competition and we saw one of the MOST AMAZING STREAKS ever in tennis come to an end today. AS for the experts, robin soderling did teach them a lesson but they sail on , LOL

1.Ricky Dimon=18 points, did well enough to sustain his lead at the top.

2.CHerl Murray= 16 points, needs a better performance than today if she is to make a winning comeback, still very much in contention though

*Looking forward to your picks for day 11, thank you experts.

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 9:25 PM

Nativenewyorker.............just like you I was not brave enough to post my prediction of a Sod win but I kinda saw it coming bcos of the way Sod was playing. However, if Sod and Rafa are to meet in the finals i think Rafa will fair better than Fed did bcos

(1) Rafa has ample time now to study Sod's game and see where Fed went wrong or did not exploit
(2) Rafa has been tested in his game with Belucci where he had to dig deep and that will work in his favour going further into this tourney
(3) Rafa is a superb grinder and a fighter, a fierce competitor
(4) Rafa is not injured.......at least not physically
(5) Rafa has tonnes of experience in winning GS!!
(6) and Rafa is the best on clay, perhaps in the history of the game!!!

...........so if that does not mean much then i dont know what will!!!!

VAMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

is this you ricky??

vamosrafa , 6/1/10 11:24 PM

Wow, Sod really did the damage here.
But come Sunday, we'll see the real test. Hopefully, nadal and sod can get to final and battle it out.

Vamos Rafa!

Almagro, Djokovic (most likely) and finally Sod, beat them all, then all this lingering daubt will die instantly!!!

The KING is getting back his THRONE!!

AidanZ , 6/2/10 3:45 AM

we (and by we I really mean Cheryl) had a golden chance to take the golden racket today with a pick of Soderling. However, we did not believe in the Sod!!!

amazing performance

RickyDimon , 6/2/10 4:56 AM

"isabeau77" and "anand" tie for the win, even down to the number of games. And they not only won among the guests, but also beat the experts (with the Soderling pick, of course)

isabeau and anand - email me if you want to be an 'expert' later in the tournament

RickyDimon , 6/2/10 7:05 AM

Wow by Soderling's performance. I'm one of those that said that Fed will always beat Soderling on clay, unless Fed has an off day. Well I can't say that Fed has an off day in the QF match. Sod certainly come ready with a game plan, and like last year, executes it to perfection. Well done Sod!! Commies to Fed!

Fed didn't play badly, but I noticed his first serves had gone down, resulting in his second serves under constant attack by Sod. It didn't help that Sod kept bombing down 1st and even 2nd serves at above 200 kph most of the time. Fed staying at the baseline to rally with Sod wouldn't help either.

If Rafa and Sod meets in the final, I'm optimistic that Rafa will fare better than Fed. Rafa will not make the same mistakes like last year, he'll most probably try to move Sod around and come to the net more often, working the angles. I think Rafa is improving on his ROS, judging by the number of times he breaks his opponents' serves. Rafa has to be careful though not to throw his own service games away.

Congrats to Berdych, as I've predicted, he'll go far in this tournament. I'm looking forward to the semi between Berdych and Sod, and contrary to what most people here believe, I think Berdych has a good chance of going into the final. He strikes the ball so cleanly and he also has a big serve, moves well and most importantly, he looks relax on the court. He even smiles at times during the match when he couldn't get to the ball or missed a shot. I like the new improved Berdych and I think he can withstand all the bombardments that Sod will send in his way, after all he doesn't shank like Fed and he can swing freely like Sod too but moves better than him.
