  • French Open Expert Picks: Day 7

    2010-05-29 02:57:24

Expert picks are back for Saturday at the French Open. Join the fun in the comments section for the right to become a guest picker later in the tournament!

    (7) Fernando Verdasco vs. (30) Philipp Kohlschreiber

Ricky: I'm not going to fall into the trap and pick Kohlschreiber to win this one. Yes, Verdasco is tired due to an ill-advised schedule, but he played only two matches in the last six days (which, for him, is a STREAK of rest!). He has been looking OK so far at the French, and Kohlschreiber (last year's win over Novak Djokovic notwithstanding) never beats players whom he is not supposed to beat. Verdasco 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.

Cheryl: Verdasco is going to get really tired sooner or later. I'm betting on sooner. Kohlschreiber has actually looked good this week and Verdasco has looked...well...a little ragged. He had a really weird match against Florent Serra in which he was bageled in the third set. Kohlschreiber is good on this surface and Verdasco has frankly played too much tennis this spring. Kohlschreiber 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

    (19) Nicolas Almagro vs. Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr.

Ricky: Dolgopolov is starting to make a name for himself, but let's not overreact to his win over Fernando Gonzalez. Gonzo is a shell of himself right now. Almagro, meanwhile, is one of the hottest clay-courters in the business at the moment, which is not out of the ordinary for him. Almagro 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Cheryl: Almagro has been surprisingly solid this clay season. Dolgopolov has had a bit of a breakout, but the Spaniard has been pretty well ruthless on clay - except against Nadal, of course. I'd expect this to be a straight-setter for the Spaniard. Almagro 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

    (14) Ivan Ljubicic vs. (24) Thomaz Bellucci

Ricky: This should be the best match of the day, as Bellucci is lethal on clay and Ljubicic is an underrated clay-courter himself. All things being equal, this would just about be a toss-up, but Ljubicic went to 10-8 in the fifth against Mardy Fish and most of that match was played on Friday. Bellucci 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-3.

Cheryl: Hmmm...this is an interesting matchup. Ljubicic just went the distance against Fish of all people and no offense to Fish, but Bellucci plays a heckuva lot better on clay than Fish does. I don't see Ljubo coming out of this one. Bellucci has been quietly impressive so far and I expect that to continue on Saturday. Bellucci 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

Nadal games against count: How many for Hewitt?

    Ricky
: Nadal has won his last four meetings with Hewitt, three of which came on clay and two at the French Open. Hewitt got 10 games and five games last year. This should be somewhere in between. Nadal is finally on fire again, and Hewitt's performance against Denis Istomin does not suggest he will reach double digits. Eight games for Hewitt.

Cheryl:  This is a HORRIBLE matchup for Hewitt on clay.  Or to put a finer point on it, Nadal played Hewitt at the French last year, when he had no knees left, and Hewitt managed five games.  This is going to be ugly for the Aussie, though I imagine it will delight Nadal fans a lot. Six games for Hewitt.

clayking , 5/29/10 6:42 AM

Ricky,

I really like your prediction of Almagro beating Dolgo. I don't like this business of jumping on bandwagons when a player gets a few good wins under his belt. I am not even sure it will go to four sets. I am with Cheryl and am leaning toward a straight set win.

I also agree that Bellucci will beat Ljuby. It could go four sets, not sure about this one.

Tired or not, I will still pick Verdasco in a tough four setter against Kohls.

I love this game of picking how many games Rafa's opponent will win against him! Nice! I don't see Hewitt posing much of a threat right now for Rafa. I am thinking five games.

Nativenewyorker , 5/29/10 6:42 AM

hi vamos,
i have replied to your argument on that borg nadal matter..
do read that when you get time, that is if you have not read it yet..
cheers..

clayking , 5/29/10 6:56 AM

Verdasco will go on feeding backhand Kohl which will break after 6-7 shots - Verdasco in four.
Hewitt might target forehand corner of Rafa and get 9 games.
Almagro and Bellucci in four.

eskay , 5/29/10 7:22 AM

yeah why on earth did verdasco choose to play in Nice? he is a class player so he should prevail against kohlschreiber in 4 set. the german is not consistent enough for the upset

croc , 5/29/10 11:23 AM

??? I don't think Verdasco needs these points for ranking purpose that badly. He can earn these even beyond the clay season.

eskay , 5/29/10 11:27 AM

7 games for hewitt(just averaged ricky's and cheryl's picks)

:)

vrael , 5/29/10 11:59 AM

vamosrafa , 5/29/10 12:10 PM

Are the matches started? The scoreboard is gone what happened?

Raindrops , 5/29/10 12:26 PM

yep...the matches have started...roddick's probably gonna lose the 2nd set too...

vrael , 5/29/10 12:28 PM

ginepri takes the first set (ferrero) ... 7:5

rfzr , 5/29/10 4:48 PM

had cheryl picked kohli in 5, she would have had a good chance of stealing the golden racket from Ricky, 5th set to get underway soon...

vamosrafa , 5/29/10 5:55 PM

oops..nando gets both breaks of serve back.

vamosrafa , 5/29/10 6:11 PM

nd great fightback from ferrero ! in a good position to level at 2-2 sets

vamosrafa , 5/29/10 6:14 PM

Can't believe that both Ferrer and Ferrero lost today

SGHIceman , 5/29/10 7:09 PM

^^^I can't believe Ferrero lost to GINEPRI. On clay. Yikes.

cherylmurray , 5/29/10 7:15 PM

Thank you...thank you, experts.
Since you are not speaking about Nole's matches in day 6 and 7, I am presuming that you are all sure in his victory...
AJDE NOLE... ROAD TO RAFA IS OPEN!!!!... and then in SF, it's gonna be war!!!

zare , 5/29/10 7:55 PM

nole's draw opened out a bit ... will be interesting to see whether bellucci can mount any challenge to rafa.

rfzr , 5/29/10 11:48 PM

I know that in SF Rafa is huge, I mean HUGE favorite... but if we don't hope...then what's the point of being someone's fan???
btw... it's early to speak... one got to reach SF first.
AJDE NOLEEEEE!!!

zare , 5/30/10 1:02 AM

did Cheryl ACTUALLY pick Kohlschreiber? Or did she just misspell Verdasco "k-o-h-l-s-c-h-r-e-i-b-e-r"????

RickyDimon , 5/30/10 3:17 AM

Will someone please post an update on the Cheryl/Ricky race, please? Thanks, I want to know who to bet on for this week. :D

Kelli , 5/30/10 3:57 AM

RickyDimon , 5/30/10 5:32 AM

Oh sorry experts and followers, I was not able to update the scoreboard on time.Anyway, The verdasco-kohlschrebier match proved to the critical one and turned out to be the defining pick of the day. Here is how the two forecasters stand:

1.Ricky= 12 points , outshining cheryl for the 3rd consecutive day of competition, the DEMON escalates to a healthy lead.

2.Cheryl=9 points, trying hard but unable to catch up with her ARCH rival who seems to be too much to handle at the moment.

*Ricky is gradually increasing his ascendancy over cheryl and Cheryl MUST stop the bleeding as soon as possible!

*Ricky is still holding the golden racket (i wonder is he ever gona leave it)

*Good luck experts :)
