  • Top 25 French Open Contenders: Part 7

    2010-05-21 04:27:59

Leading up to the start of the French Open, Ricky is counting down the Top 25 biggest threats on the red clay of Roland Garros in groups of two, three, or four players. Part 7 features contenders 3 and 4.

    4. Fernando VerdascoPros: Ever since his memorable run to the brink of the 2009 Australian Open final, Verdasco has been tinkering with elite status; both in ranking and at Grand Slams. He made fourth-round appearances at last year’s French and Wimbledon and at this year’s Australian, and he reached the quarters of last year’s U.S. Open. Recent results—which include a runner-up finish in Monte-Carlo, a title in Barcelona, a semifinal performance in Rome—suggest that Verdasco could be ready for even bigger at better things this time around at Roland Garros. Plus, his No. 9 ranking will earn him a Top 8 seed and thus he will be the second highest-ranked player in one of the quarters.

Cons: Although Verdasco has made it to the French Open fourth round three times, he has never been past that stage. In a worst-case scenario, the Spaniard would be fatigued due to too many matches and he would go down yet again before the quarterfinals. After all, he fell to Jurgen Melzer in straight sets in the Madrid third round and he struggled with Sergiy Stakhovsky on Thursday in Nice. In fact, his Nice participation makes it five tournaments in six weeks for Verdasco. That’s just brutal, especially heading into a Grand Slam.

Bottom line: Verdasco is playing like he can beat anyone in the tournament other than Rafael Nadal. The question, of course, is will his body hold up? Perhaps more than any other player in the draw, Verdasco has all-or-nothing potential. An early loss would not be a total shock, but if he is feeling fine, he has a legitimate chance to reach his first Grand Slam final.

    3. David FerrerPros: Ferrer is in absolutely ridiculous form right now. So far this clay-court season he has reached the semifinals in Monte-Carlo, the semifinals in Barcelona, the final in Rome, and the semifinals in Madrid. He did not get knocked out until running into Nadal, Verdasco, Nadal, and Roger Federer, respectively. So it’s pretty clear what it is going to take to knock Ferrer out of the French Open, where he is a two-time quarterfinalist.

Cons: There is really nothing bad to say about Ferrer. His only real drawback is that he will not be seeded as high as he deserves (which is definitely Top 8). Instead, he will be the ninth seed and that means he could run into one of the 5-8 seeds in the fourth round and one of the 1-4 seeds in the quarterfinals.

Bottom line: Ferrer always has been and almost certainly will continue to be lethal on clay. Nobody wants to see him anywhere near them in the draw. Anything less than a quarterfinal appearance would be a huge disappointment and if Ferrer is on the opposite side of the draw from Nadal, he has a real shot at making it all the way to final.

VAMOS DAVEED!!!

sadie , 5/21/10 5:00 AM

go ferrer the small

vamos nando!!!

vrael , 5/21/10 6:41 AM

V.Fernando came into lime light for the trouble he gave to Nadal in the Semis of A.O. David too has similar capacity. But basically they are trouble makers not champions - no disrespect intended. Playing against smaller mortals, they lift trophies. But they do not have in them to roll past two top ten in a row in a G.S. They appeared to be in good form this clay season, but one of the Latin Americans can ambush them on his day.

eskay , 5/21/10 8:37 AM

very true eskey.....they need to believe in themselves a lot more...nando and ferrer just roll over for rafa and roger!

vrael , 5/21/10 9:03 AM

Serious contenders other than Rafa and Roger should have beaten these two and can have self-belief on the bigger theatre that they can do it again. Since Delpo and Davy are out, names which come to mind are Djoker, Berdych, Tsonga, Soderling and Andy. Verdasco and Ferrer should come after them.

eskay , 5/21/10 9:28 AM

Berdych, Tsonga, Soderling and Andy can only bring surprises on dirt, while Ferrer and Verdasco are consistent playing on clay. So consistency versus surprise.

Djoker is a good clay courter no doubt, but his recent form is not promising since Indian Wells he loses early. RG is best of 5 sets tournament so his chance is very slim.

Raindrops , 5/21/10 9:55 AM

i dunno y..but i feel nole will go deep at rg this year......maybe its the law of averages clay king mentions.....

i hope the dreaded law of averages doesnt apply to rafa this year....

vrael , 5/21/10 10:42 AM

Raindrops I would say Djokovic is more than a good claycourter. He is amonst the best and has already proved himself at RG with a QF and 2 SFs. 4 of his 17 titles have been won on clay which is a better ratio than the 9 out of 62 for Federer.

Admittedly he has lost his way a bit at the moment, partly due to the ill-fated experiment with Todd Martin and also because he played himself into the ground last season. I'm with vrael on this one. If he finds his form again he is more than capable of going the distance at RG.

ed251137 , 5/21/10 12:13 PM

the draws are oouuTTT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sort of balanced draw for both....roger potentially has wawrinka in rnd 4...GULBIS in qtr finals.. and murray/soderling in the semis (if we go according to seedings)

for rafa things look pretty good...potentially 3rd rnd hewitt ( a win over lleyton was a disaster last year lol)...gonzalez 4th rnd,....nando/almagro qtr final...djokovic/ferrer in the semis !!

things look really sweet for nadal...i expect him to win Rg without dropping more than 1 set !! vamosss !! cant wait

vamosrafa , 5/21/10 12:24 PM

Gasquet - Murray in the first round is pretty juicy

SGHIceman , 5/21/10 12:27 PM

nole vs rafa in the semis would be a treat...they havent played each other yet in 2010

vrael , 5/21/10 1:01 PM

murray must be banging his head...wat a brutal first round

vrael , 5/21/10 1:03 PM

@vamosrafa
u have got it a bit wrong. Soderling is in Federers quarter. Soderling drew Gulbis for round 4. Also, murray drew Tsonga in his quarter. And he has a brutal Ist round clash with Gasquet.

tj600 , 5/21/10 1:08 PM

yea tj i have realized it..thank you for correcting tho :) actually i followed the draw chart live and was really excited so made a mistake analyzing it :D

vamosrafa , 5/21/10 1:34 PM

My quarterfinal line up: Nadal vs. Verdasco, Federer vs. Montanes, Djoker vs. Ferrer and Tsonga Vs. Baghdatis

eskay , 5/21/10 2:06 PM

good line up eskey...ricky feels monatnes can make it to the quarters as well....i doubt verdasco will be fit enough to reach quarters though...he has to be a super human...5 tournies in 6 weeks...no joke!

vrael , 5/21/10 2:35 PM

Ya, I too have some doubts. If one Fernando (v) does not make it, the other will do from this quarter - Fernando (G).

eskay , 5/21/10 2:42 PM

fernando g is very good on clay as well...probably better than fernando v if hez at his best....we will have to wait n see...the old fashioned way..lol

vrael , 5/21/10 2:49 PM

Ya, and also on hard court. Remember A.O finals. Also he brings same intensity to court as does Nadal. Never a dull moment when he is playing.

eskay , 5/21/10 2:52 PM

yes eskey...he is truly a character...he is not as flambouyant as the marcelo rios...but he still is a treat to watch.....i like seeing him play...too bad he has a one hander...he cant hope to beat rafa with a weaker backhand wind...u need to have a world class backhand to beat rafael!!

vrael , 5/21/10 3:01 PM

*wing not wind...

*the marcelo rios.....marcelo rios

vrael , 5/21/10 3:03 PM

I keep wondering why Fernando played last week... especially since he must know the kind of potential he has at RG if not tired.

chlorostoma , 5/21/10 3:08 PM

Unfathomable to me too. But ain't they practicing the same number of hours daily if they are not playing a tournament. Is it more a mental exhaustion in tournaments than physical. you may land up jaded mentally, even if the body is pushed to the limits. I hope Fernando does not have to realise the mistake as Nadal did last year.

eskay , 5/21/10 3:21 PM

Although there are now more people around capable of taking a set off Rafa at RG, if they both reach the final, I suspect it will be Federer who will lose a few more on the way than Rafa. What Rafa does not need are too many brutal 5-setters with the likes of Verdasco, Djokovic or Gonzales.

ed251137 , 5/21/10 3:26 PM

gonzales, verdasco would be broken down by rafa's forehand on clay...gonzo specially with a one hander....nole is the problem ed251137,nole at his best can compete with rafa...but i doubt he will this year...

vrael , 5/21/10 3:42 PM

@vrael
who do u think would win if both played at their best, gonzo or verdasco?

tj600 , 5/21/10 3:50 PM

gonzo, beyond doubt..

clayking , 5/21/10 4:00 PM

gonzo any day!
