Rome expert picks wrap up on Sunday with an all-Spanish final between Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer. Will it be smooth sailing for Nadal, or did Ernests Gulbis expose a vulnerability in the four-time champion on semifinal Saturday?
Rafael Nadal vs. David Ferrer
Ricky: Nadal is 10-3 lifetime against Ferrer and the favored Spaniard has won their last seven clay-court encounters (Ferrer's lone victory on the clay came in their very first head-to-head meeting way back in 2004). That statistic is hard to overlook, nor is there any reason to overlook it. Ferrer scored a monumental win over his countryman at the 2007 win U.S. Open, but he simply does not have the game to trouble Nadal on a consistent basis, especially not on clay. Gulbis' performance will give other players some hope, but Nadal is going to treat that as a wake-up call and he will be out to make a statement on Sunday. Nadal 6-3, 6-3.
Cheryl: So Gulbis made Nadal dig deep - and you can bet that Ernie is going to be the player everyone will be looking for at Roland Garros...but on Sunday it's Ferrer that Nadal has to worry about. Nadal's form on Saturday wasn't the best, but that has mostly to do with the pressure he was under from Gublis. Ferrer has been in good form this week as well, but the way Nadal played at the end of the semi suggests that another straight-set win is in store for him over Ferrer. Nadal 7-5, 6-4.
Kelli: Ferrer has expended the least amount of energy this week, especially during his match with a visibly weary Verdasco. Gulbis gave everything he had against Nadal, who played a surprisingly passive match in the semifinals. Still, Nadal does what Ferrer does on clay, only 10-fold better. Expect Ferrer to put up a fight, but it won't be enough against the defending champion. Nadal 7-6(2), 6-2.

Couldn't bear 2 watch Nadal/Gulbis match, in fact stopped watching after he lost 2nd set, then came back a hour later 2 check out the comments here & was ecstatic. Tough match so my predictions: Nadal 7-5 : 7-6

well today it is not at all interesting..
we know the winner..
and we have an idea of scores..
still here is what i think..
nadal 6-3, 6-2
clayking , 5/2/10 5:42 AM
ferrer 6-2 6-0.
nadal will get massacred once again!
attackingtennisrulez , 5/2/10 7:15 AM
this match is not going to be interesting. Even tho clay is ferrers favourite surface, nadal actually prefers playing clay court specialists like ferrer to big hitters like gulbis. Simply becoz nadal plays a similar style to ferrer-but does it 50 times better. Unless nadal is shanking his groundstrokes very badly, its nadal in 2. 6-2 6-3
tj600 , 5/2/10 9:57 AM
another SLAP coming ATR's way :P rafa in 2
6-3 6-3
vamosrafa , 5/2/10 10:09 AM
i agree with tj600. how come nadal and nalbandian never played on clay, that would be a cool match !!
croc , 5/2/10 10:15 AM
I love seeing Rafa smoosh the competition the way he did in MC. And Rafa seems cool with that, but he really loves a dogfight. It's where he eats. It's why he plays tennis. He was jumping around like a big frog after the Gulbis match. I think he'll play well today and win in two. No score prediction from me though.
Ramara , 5/2/10 10:37 AM
hey vamosrafa, watz up? dont worry, atr has got a tennis IQ higher than anyone in the world(even Roger Federer) His predictions always end up being correct..NOW THAT IS THE MOST SARCASTIC COMMENT YOU WILL EVER HEAR :P
Anyway, nadal will own ferrer. Clay court specialists dont trouble Nadal. What troubles nadal is when big hitters find their range and put him under constant pressure. Ferrer doesnt do any of those things.
On another note, if gulbis is doing so much damage now, imagine what will happen when the hard court season comes around..
tj600 , 5/2/10 10:45 AM
Think Rafa will make quick work of another countrymans first final 6-1 6-3
SGHIceman , 5/2/10 11:26 AM
nadal 6-4,7-6
vrael , 5/2/10 11:30 AM
Agree with your Iceman, so I'll make it more looks easier. Nadal 6-1, 6-1.
Raindrops , 5/2/10 11:36 AM
Well, I want to see a proper dogfight so....Rafa in 3: 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. There, you can all have a good laugh at me afterwards!
deuce , 5/2/10 12:01 PM
hahaha deuce, my aching jaws. With that scoreline, you combined the talent of Roger, Soderling, Gulbis, Del Potro, Celic and Davydenko in one person. He's just playing Ferrer...The Small Ferrer...remember that post from topdog of which The Small Ferrer said: be afraid, be very afraid hakhakhak.
Raindrops , 5/2/10 12:18 PM
We can imagine all we want about what Gulbis can achieve during the hard court season. However, whether he'll live up to expectations is yet to be seen. He may not be that consistent and produces good results week in and week out. He may end up still a dangerous player that every player, including the top players, would want to avoid in the draws, and still achieve little to show for his talent. We shall see what Gulbis is made of by end of the season. He should be a top 20 or even a top 10 player if he allows himself more hard work and more consistency.
luckystar , 5/2/10 1:48 PM
@tj600, hi there buddy how are you doin?? I appreciate your sarcasm :P ATR is roger's next coach , roger is begging him but he is thinking whether to coach roger or the next GOAT (bernard tomic) ;) ;)
vamosrafa , 5/2/10 1:49 PM
in case anyone is interested, bryan bros wins the doubles by defeating isner/querrery..
frankly the match was a boring one..
a big serve slugfest..
with hardly intersting plays..
clayking , 5/2/10 2:39 PM
clayking,
Spot on!
chr18 , 5/2/10 3:08 PM
sorry for Ferrer but it's going to be a Rafa fest
6-2, 6-0.
As far as Gulbis and all the talk about how scary he is, I wasn't all that impressed. He had a few good shots but lots of errors and he choked at the important moments. I think he's going to be a "mini-Safin".
grafight , 5/2/10 4:01 PM
@clayking
who cares about americans on clay.
americans, british and french should be banned from playing on clay and barred from entering clay tournaments.
they are all useless mugs.
the fact that 2 clown american double pairs reached the finals shows what a clownish 'clay' court this rome masters is.
attackingtennisrulez , 5/2/10 4:04 PM
this schmuck's at it again....what a disgrace
vrael , 5/2/10 4:08 PM
doubles results say nothing about the surface
RickyDimon , 5/2/10 4:19 PM
yes it does, its shows how fast the clay is and allows serve freaks to ace ace ace ace ace ace ace ace ace ace.
BORING zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
attackingtennisrulez , 5/2/10 4:26 PM
There's alot of posts listed on each thread but it is quick reading thru them once you get the hang of seeing ATR and then just not reading it's posts and just scrolling by them. Makes for such a nicer experience!
fan4tennis , 5/2/10 5:10 PM
I wonder the match will be postponed till tomorrow.
nadline , 5/2/10 5:36 PM
Ahaha Raindrops my score for first set much closer than yours...think second set might be yours though.
deuce , 5/2/10 6:18 PM
So far Cheryl is in the lead. :)
smr , 5/2/10 6:22 PM
deuce,
yeah I concede and I doubt if anybody have guessed the right score for the first set, so I think my Silver Racket is safe.
Raindrops , 5/2/10 7:05 PM
I WAS in the lead before Ferrer threw in that clunker of a service game. :(
cherylmurray , 5/2/10 8:42 PM
NOW it is time to CALCULATE and find out who won our 2nd masters 1000 predicting competition. As a reminder, the scenario is such that a tie break is needed to decide the winner between cheryl and Ricky, both of whom stand at 9 points EACH.
*stay tuned, the results will be posted REAL SOON :)
vamosrafa , 5/2/10 9:05 PM
Yes Cheryl looks like Kelli may have edged this one.
smr , 5/2/10 9:05 PM
I have the results, it was AMAZINGLY close ! after playing a borg-Mcenroe-1980 wimb-final tie break , we have the winner. Actually it was ONE match that did the final adjudication, the match between ferrer and murray.... and the winner isssss ::
CHERYYLLL MURRAYYYY!!! :) she picked ferrer in 2 while ricky said ferrer in 3, too close but cheryl is the winner
*Ricky's record in tie breaks is weak (0-2 :p) , mentally weak perhaps? learn from rafa ricky !! :D lol
*raindrops still holds the prestigious silver racket :)
*well-done experts , hopefully you ppl will entertain us even more in madrid
*from now , GOOD BYE FROM ROME
*MANYY CONGRATS TO ALL RAFA FANS :)
vamosrafa , 5/2/10 9:12 PM
Clayking, the Silver Racket is safe for at least 2 weeks.
There are 3 tourneys in progress that put the Bronze Racket at stake.
Keep at good grip on it.
