Welcome to the third of four installments in the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters expert picks competition! Both semifinals are on Saturday's menu. Join the fun and make your own predictions in the comments section for the right to become a guest picker for the final!
Rafael Nadal vs. David Ferrer
Ricky: Ferrer knows how to beat Nadal on the big stage, as he did just that in the fourth round of the 2007 U.S.Open. Even though Ferrer is at his best on clay, however, there is a gigantic, humongous difference between beating Nadal on the hard stuff and beating Nadal on the slow stuff. Furthermore, Nadal has won five straight meetings with Ferrer (three on clay) and there is no reason to think anything will change now based on Nadal's trio of performances earlier in the week. Nadal 6-4, 6-4.
Cheryl: Excellent semifinals, considering the lack of top players in Monte Carlo. And while the idea of two top hard-hitting clay courters sounds scintillating, this is Nadal's to lose. To put things in perspective, the last time Ferrer beat Nadal was in 2007 - and the only time he beat Nadal on clay was in 2004. They played the final in Barca last year - Nadal wasn't playing nearly as well then as he is this year, and Ferrer didn't manage to take a set. Nadal 6-3, 7-5.
Kelli: Ferrer has three wins over Nadal, but none on clay since 2004. The 28-year-old is a grinder, which is something Nadal does 10-fold better to begin with, sans the weaponry to threaten the five-time defending champion on his best surface. Players have been struggling all week long to take games from Nadal, who enters this one in full-on miser mode. I can see Ferrer keeping competitive for the majority of the opening set, but no more than that. Nadal 7-5, 6-2.
mriiidula: There's no denying that Ferrer plays his best on the red stuff. But Nadal is in a whole other league. Its going to be close, but its clear who's going to emerge victorious. Nadal 6-4 6-4.
Novak Djokovic vs.Fernando Verdasco
Ricky: Despite reaching his first career Masters semifinal, Verdasco cannot be feeling good about his second-set meltdown against Montanes. He did look good against Berdych in round three, and the Spaniard will have to repeat that performance to have any chance in this one. Djokovic entered Monte-Carlo in a minor slump, but he appears to be in outstanding form on clay for a second consecutive season. Barring a service relapse, Djokovic should roll over Verdasco just like he did over Nalbandian on Friday. Djokovic 7-5, 6-3.
Cheryl: Djokovic's form has gotten better and better since he's been in Monte Carlo (and since he fired Todd Martin). The confidence he lacked on hard courts is back now. He was merciless against Nalbandian on Friday - but I was more impressed with his win over Wawrinka in the third round. Don't count Verdasco out though. This Spaniard has made a career of winning at the most unlikely of times against the most unlikely of opponents (see last year's Australian Open). I think Verdasco might give Nole a run for it. This one is going the distance. Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5).
Kelli: Djokovic carries a 5-2 edge in the series, in addition to being the superior clay-court player. Verdasco showed that he is vulnerable when closing matches, which spells disaster against a player of the top seed's caliber, whom he has not defeated in almost four years. Djokovic looked sharp during the match with Nalbandian, and while I think Verdasco could eek out a set, plan on a Nadal vs. Djokovic final repeat come Sunday. Djokovic 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3.
mriiidula: There's no doubt that Verdaso has the game to trouble Djokovic and cause the upset. However, Djokovic seem to be getting better and better as the tournament progresses, and given Verdasco's complete meltdown in the second set against Montanes (he was 5-1 up and then lost in a tiebreaker) I'm going to have to go with the top seed. Djokovic 6-3 7-5.

Djokovic 7-5, 4-6, 6-4

With the nadal vs ferrer match, if the rally goes on for more than 4 swings, ferrer may as well just hit the ball into the stands.
Nadal 6-3 6-3
Djoker 7-5 2-6 6-2

Nativenewyorker , 4/17/10 7:31 AM
Everybody does, so I am tempted to blot my picks too ;-(
Nadal 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 - Nadal will start very strong at first set and will drop his intensity at second set due to stamina issue. Then he will prevail at 3rd set as Ferrer will be running out of gas by that time.
Jowker 6-2, 7-6(3) - same thing with Jowker, he will start strong at the first set and then will run out of gas at the second set but will manage to close out the match in 2 sets.

More rain :( . You go clayking with your Verdasco prediction ... it could happen.
smr , 4/17/10 1:55 PM
Rafa tanked his last service game just to make my scoreline true... :-)
Hope veradasco will make my day by winning over Djoker...
janadevchp , 4/17/10 3:12 PM
janadevchp hits the Nadal-Ferrer mark ON THE NUMBER. Nice one!
RickyDimon , 4/17/10 3:13 PM

vamosrafa , 4/17/10 3:17 PM

Congrats Janadevchp.
Raindrops , 4/17/10 3:18 PM
Thanks Ricky.. hoping for Veradasco win.. fingers crossed :-)
janadevchp , 4/17/10 3:19 PM
got mine backwards :P
rafa did that on purpose.
well done janadevchp!
homos , 4/17/10 3:24 PM
My goodness. So far the 2nd semi-final seems mainly to be focussed on answering the burning question "which is the biggest DChoker?"
Ramara , 4/17/10 4:17 PM
Verdasco is up a set and a break ... I'd say Djokovic has it in the bag.
smr , 4/17/10 4:48 PM
djokovics new nickname mite b chokovic..*sigh*
tj600 , 4/17/10 4:50 PM
It's not over! Don't forget, we got two world class chokers here!
Well, not really. Djoko's got all kinds of 1st serve problems. But he's also mixing some really awful groundies in with really good ones.
Ramara , 4/17/10 5:00 PM
it's over. were clayking and janadevhp the only ones who predicted a nando win?
ricky, will you have to pass your silver racket to janadevchp?
homos , 4/17/10 5:16 PM
Vamos! An all spanish final! I didnt watch d match, so can anyone tell me if nando played good or nole was having a vacation inside his head?
ekattor , 4/17/10 5:21 PM
This sucks. I'm soooo disappointed. Actually, disappointed is an understatement. I don't know what the hell happened coz I had a horrible stream goin on, but losing 6-2 6-2 means it was a freaking demolition :(
mriiidula , 4/17/10 5:27 PM
Wow...went out after the first set expecting a fight back from Djoker, by the time I came back it was an easy win in the end for nando..
janadevchp , 4/17/10 5:33 PM
somebody just tell me???
is anything wrong with my eyes or did djokovic get drubbed 2-6, 2-6..
i could not watch the match, nor could follow it, but now i just checked it and i think i'm seeing things.. help me guys..
p.s. even thouh my prediction is right, but the scoreline is just out of any realms of imagination..
clayking , 4/17/10 5:38 PM
Well well well, after rafael nadal lived up to expecations surprising whereabouts were on display. Our experts struggled big time too and here is how they stand
1.Kelli Demario=9 points : she did what was required to sustain the lead and stands a VERY good chance of winning the 1st ever masters 1000 on clay.
2. Cheryl Murray= 8 points: she is still in contention but looks like her chances of wining the title are infinitesimally small.
3. Ricky Dimon = 7 points : like the top seed djokovic, out top seed Ricky dimon has been ousted from the title. He has already headed towards the practice courts to maek amends come rome masters :)
*Cheryl can level things up the top and then a tie-break will decide the winner
* It has been an entertaining week and hope we have a great ending tomorrow, until then, good bye :)
vamosrafa , 4/17/10 5:42 PM
you are right clayking, no one can imagine that score line..Djoker was making a match in the begining, but in the end he lost the plot completely..
janadevchp , 4/17/10 5:43 PM
hey vamosrafa another good one from you!! keep it up!!
homos , 4/17/10 5:53 PM
Nicest thing you could say about Djoko's play today was: inconsistent. First serve % hi 40's - and it didn't seem that high! Tons of UFE's especially late in the 2nd set. Dunno, maybe he's sick. If he wasn't he probably is now. Nando played pretty well but nothing astonishing. Certainly nothing that explains the scoreline.
Ramara , 4/17/10 6:01 PM
hey!!
actually i'm quite new to tt..
just 2 weeks old...
and i was wondering..
why is there never a discussion about doubles..
as far as i know, it is also part of atp..
i know everyone loves to see two guys slugging it out than four guys playing shorter matches...
but still just curios to know why is doubles not discussed?
clayking , 4/17/10 6:33 PM
Good to see Verdasco make it to his first Masters final but he won't have a chance tomorrow. Djoker did look winded from the start. I thought something may have been wrong. That was confirmed for me when I saw him blow his nose into the towel. Glad I wasn't that ball kid. No Kleenex on court though I guess so no choice. If he's sick, it's just as well he didn't get to the final. Better luck next time.
chr18 , 4/17/10 6:34 PM
@HOMOS...thanks....glad you liked it :) . now lets hope rafa wins tomorrow , group hugs and collective fist pumping awaits :P
vamosrafa , 4/17/10 7:25 PM
janadevchp wins it with an absolutely amazing day of picking. EXACT score of Nadal-Ferrer and correct upset winner in Verdasco-Djoker.
janadevchp - email me ASAP at ridimon@gmail.com or ricky.dimon@tennistalk.com to do guest picks for the final.
RickyDimon , 4/17/10 8:47 PM
DAmn I won yest and i just found out. Had no access to comp for a day! But I am happy i won.
ANyway prediction for final is Nadal 6-3 6-3 :)
vmk1 , 4/17/10 9:29 PM
clayking, I've asked that question about doubles as well. Many years ago, they used to pay a lot of attention to doubles because the top singles players were also the top doubles players, but becuase the top singles players only play as and when they feel like it, they just ignore it. They should at least show all the doubles finals on TV, and they should be played on the show courts.
nadline , 4/17/10 9:50 PM
clayking, a lot of it does seem to be what nadline alluded to.
I know there was a lot more attention paid to the doubles at IW when Rafa and Marc won their championship.
(The cynic in me wants to say the singles game also shapes itself to a more dramatic sports narrative. Even with the ladies.)
I *can* tell you Nestor/Zimonjic will play Bhupathi/Mirnyi tomorrow for the championship, following Rafa and Fer's final. :-)
mara002 , 4/17/10 10:30 PM
final expert picks - http://tiny.cc/uia1d
doubles pick - Mirnyi/Bhupathi 7-6(5), 4-6, 10-8
RickyDimon , 4/18/10 3:30 AM
well nadline and mara..
what i am asking is why is doubles NOT discussed in a tennis forum like tt..
showing it on tv or playing it on show courts is beyond our reach..
but what we can do is atleast have some discussions about it in say once a week or so..
in 2 weeks i'm yet to see a doubles discussion..
well maybe i'm saying this because my country has produced two great doubles players and none in singles, but even you would accept that a part of atp tennis deserves a mention on tt..
p.s. i'm from India.. time difference.. +5:30 GMT
clayking , 4/18/10 4:54 AM
And, clayking, the doubles final will be on Court Central.
(I do share some of your annoyance with TV coverage. I remember for the first two rounds of Miami, you couldn't even get coverage on TC. Of a US tournament! In the States! For even the singles rounds, let alone doubles! *mutters*)
mara002 , 4/18/10 6:49 AM
clayking: I find lack of doubles coverage/discussion strange too and for me especially just now cos Murray/Hutchins seemed to put up a really good fight against those maestros the Bryan Brothers and there was NO mention anywhere, leave alone opportunity to see it.
