Expert picks are back for the semifinals and final of the Sony Ericsson Open. Part one features semifinal Friday, with Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Tomas Berdych, and Robin Soderling in action.
Rafael Nadal vs. Andy Roddick
Ricky “Don’t lose that number” Dimon: Rarely have I seen Nadal play hard-court tennis like did against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday night. He was in Nikolay Davydenko-esque form, standing on top of the baseline and moving a more powerful opponent with ruthless precision.
Even the biggest Roddick supporter will admit that the American has no chance if a lot of baseline rallies are contested on Friday. Roddick does not have to apologize for enjoying an easy path to the semis, but he is going to get a rude awakening when he goes from guys like Stakhovsky, Becker, and Almagro right to Nadal. Unless Roddick has one of his best serving days, this one should not be terribly close. Nadal 6-4, 6-3.
Cheryl “Just call me Federer ‘cause I’m gonna win Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back” Murray: It's about time for Rafael Nadal to break his semifinal curse. The Spaniard has so far spent his 2010 season getting close, but never quite sealing the deal. He hasn't had any bizarre early round exits like the rest of the top 4, but he seems to get tight at the money end of the tournament.
I think this could be his moment. Sure, Roddick is playing well right now and yes, he has that nasty serve, but Nadal was on FIRE against Tsonga. He's going to pounce all over Roddick's second serve. Nadal 7-6(5), 6-4.
Tomas Berdych vs. Robin Soderling
Ricky: If this was the old Tomas Berdych—you know, the Berdych of about two weeks ago—I would predict a straight-set blowout for Soderling. Suddenly, though, it looks like the ATP has a new Tomas Berdych on its hands. It’s not that he reached the Miami semifinals, it’s the way he did it: saving a match points against the No. 1 player in the world then battling back from the brink of defeat two days later against Fernando Verdasco.
Soderling, though, has been in awesome form for a full year now. The old Berdych might get double-bageled by Soderling; the new Berdych will do well just to make this one close. Soderling 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2.
Cheryl: Berdych vs. Soderling is probably not what the Miami tournament directors expected for a top half semi, but that's what they got. With most eyes on the Nadal-Roddick match, Soderling or Berdych will have a chance to fly in under the radar.
Their prior playing record would seem to indicate that Soderling will have the edge going into Friday's match, but Berdych has been playing unusually well. If the Czech can keep his unforced errors in check and his intensity up, there is a real chance at an upset. He already beat Federer for the first time in eight tries this week - no reason to think he can't keep up the momentum. Berdych 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.

i see the typical picking-nadull-to-win-everything here.
did u guys pick nadull to win the french open match against robin ''nadull destroyer'' soderking as well?
i remember ppl picking nadull to win the aussie open this year aswell, lol.
completely forgetting he hasnt beaten a top 5 player since god knows when.
when nadull beats a top 5 player and wins a slam again, then wake me up.
roddick is a much better hard court player than nadull.
and combine it with nadull's awful semis record plus the recent choking, i dunno how anyone can bet against roddick here.
nadull will have to play the match of his life to beat roddick.
nadull is very inconsistent thesedays, not only during different matches but now even during sets.
against ferrer he couldnt hit a backhand to save his life.
and besides how many times has he choked in miami?
in 2005 was up 2 sets to love against federer and choked, then in 2008 he was the red hot favourite but ended up getting mauled by davydenko.
and last year choked against del potro and gave jmdp confidence to thrash him later that year in the US open semis.
and on countless occasions nadull has lost his serve just after breaking serve, showing lack of concentration.
when he has his man down, he lets them back into the match, he has lost that ruthless finishing.
when federer has his man down, majority of the time he keeps them down and delivers the knock out punch.

with the soderling vs berdych match, its soda in 2, 6-4 6-4. Berdych has played well so far, but hes probably mentally drained from his last 2 encounters; the same cannot be said about the swede.
with the nadal vs roddick match, its nadal in 2, 6-4 7-5. However, roddick has a decent shot if he serves well and keeps the rallies short, coz if the rally goes on for more than 4 to 5 shots, he may as well just hit the ball into the stands. Period.

I wonder wat this schmuck would say if rafa beats andy today......
let me guess " NADAL DID NOT WIN IT,RODDICK GAVE IT TO HIM"......getting so repetetive these days........hardly any fun!
VAMOS!!!!!!!!
vrael , 4/2/10 10:38 AM
Thanks Experts! Soda will have to improve his serve to beat Berdych ... Rafa/Roddick ... just hope it is a good match for all the paying customers.

nice to see the experts back ...
Its interesting to note that the score lines predicted by both experts have been seen before..as in rafa beat roddick 6-4 6-3 in indian wells 2007, then in indian wells 2009 he beat roddick 6-4 7-6(5) :).... its unlikely for roddick to snag a set from rafa. rafa said in his presser that he needs to be aggressive when needed, hope he stays aggressive and avail opportunities like he did in the tsonga match. Roddik's bachand is similar to tsonga so thats a BIG advantage for rafa, he can dominate rallies by pummeling andy's bh and then hitting that lethal down-the-line finish !
vamoss !! another victory against top 10 is on the cards , go rafa go !
vamosrafa , 4/2/10 12:37 PM
i predict a 6-4 7-5 rafa victory !
vamosrafa , 4/2/10 12:38 PM
Roddick's serve is the only thing that will trouble Rafa, but if Rafa can return most of them, then he'll be in with a very good chance.
I'm glad that Rafa's match is on first, because I have to go to bed early tonight as we are going on holiday tomorrow. I won't see the final, but if Rafa bites the trophy, I'd be happy to watch the recording.
nadline , 4/2/10 12:53 PM
dont know...I have a bad feeling on this one. Rafa pls do it this time for all of us.
atul1985 , 4/2/10 12:57 PM
Nadal will beat A'dick in 2, Sod wins in 2 then best current rivalry in tennis for the final. That should be a spectacle. I might make that 90-mile drive after all.
chr18 , 4/2/10 1:59 PM
I think Berdych will beat Sod, the match between Sod and Youzhny was a non event, they both played very badly.
nadline , 4/2/10 4:25 PM
chr18, I'm surprised that you would go to so much trouble to watch Rafa play, as you hate his mannerisms so much. How are you going to cope with all the fist pumps?
nadline , 4/2/10 5:03 PM
TT, it would be nice to have an updated poll, the current one doesn't mean anythig anymore.
nadline , 4/2/10 5:58 PM
ricky, this time i think i am late but anyway, i have sent it .. do post it if you get it on time :D
vamosrafa , 4/2/10 5:59 PM
Vamos Rafa has Nadal 6-4 7-5 and Soderling 6-3 6-7 6-2
looks like Cheryl is the only one on the Berdych train
RickyDimon , 4/2/10 7:20 PM
good going rafa good going...he took adv of that game in which the quality of roddick's serve fell
vamosrafa , 4/2/10 7:51 PM
Ricky, I'm tipping Berdych to win as well. Soderling didn't play that well against Youznhy despite the scoreline.
nadline , 4/2/10 8:13 PM
of course nadal fans would want soda to lose as they are scared of soda! dont worry, nadal is out so doesnt matter!
GoMuzza , 4/2/10 10:44 PM
And that would be the sound of Cheryl taking the lead from Ricky.
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA :D
cherylmurray , 4/3/10 3:45 AM
Oh, the dreaded creature atr is back again to post more inane ramblings on Rafa.
It would be nice to blame Ricky for picking Rafa, but unfortunately this loss falls squarely on Rafa's shoulders! Also, didn't cheryl pick Rafa, too? They thought the same thing I thought - this was finally Rafa's time. Not to be.
Nativenewyorker , 4/3/10 10:38 AM
Congratulations Cheryl! :)
Predictions for the final? Berdych usually starts well ... I think if he can keep his focus till the end then he will win.
