  • Indian Wells semifinal expert picks

    2010-03-20 17:54:34

Masters Series events are back, and so too are expert picks! We’re picking the rest of the way in Indian Wells, and it continues with Saturday's semifinals.

    Rafael Nadal vs. Ivan Ljubicic

Kelli: The 31-year-old veteran is playing some inspired tennis in the twilight of his career, but he hasn't beaten Nadal since 2005. Ljubicic possesses a terrific serve, and while Nadal's return of serve isn't the best, making it past Isner in the round of 16 was a big challenge. This late in a tournament, with championship points to defend, I can't see betting against Nadal with the head-to-head 5-1 in his favor. Nadal 6-3, 7-6(4).

Ricky: Ljubicic has lost to Nadal five straight times and what's to say anything will change this time around? The Croat can't beat Nadal on clay, can't beat Nadal on grass, can't beat Nadal on hards, can't beat Nadal insider, outside, or even when Nadal isn't at his best. Now, Nadal is in fine form and at one of his favorite tournaments (he happens to be the defending champ). Ljubicic has done well for himself this week, but by his admission he got a gift from Novak Djokovic in round four. No gifts from the Spaniard in the semifinals. Nadal 7-6(4), 6-3.

Vamos Rafa: Nadal seems to have shaken off his knee injuries. Moving as good as ever, serving cleverly (jamming tall guys with heavy body serves), the Spaniard is on a mission. He has been quick to swoop upon short balls and the forehand has been working with brutal efficiency for him. Ljubicic is playing great tennis in his own terms, serving big, venturing the net with the help of hard penetrative shots off both wings. Rafa owns him in terms of head-to-head but Ljubicic's playing style can somewhat distort Nadal's cadence. Given the way Rafa has been handling big servers this week (put more than 50% of Isner's 1st serves into play), I expect the Spaniard to sail into Sunday's final and improve his IW record to a stagerring 27-3. Nadal 6-4, 6-4.

    Robin Soderling vs. Andy Roddick

    Kelli
: Roddick has played well this week, although he hasn't faced much of a challenge en route to the semis. With Baghdatis taking out the American's main competition in Federer, Roddick's road to the final four consisted of Lu, De Bakker, Melzer and Robredo. Soderling, on the other hand, ran through Korolev, Lopez, Tsonga and Murray. The Swede hasn't dropped a set to Roddick in two previous meetings- I don't see him losing one on Saturday. Soderling 7-6, 6-4.

    Ricky
: Neither man has really been troubled in Indian Wells, but Soderling is far more battle-tested against top-notch competition. Roddick has simply steamrolled guys he always owns, while Soderling was impressive in victories over Tsonga and Murray. Furthermore, Soderling is 2-0 lifetime against the American (yes both of those wins came indoors, where Soderling excels, but still....). Look for a steady dose of big serves and huge forehands to the Roddick backhand to be enough to get the Swede another victory. Soderling 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3.

Vamos Rafa: Soderling has been crunching the ball regularly all week. After slaughtering Murray in the 1st set, he strongly fended off some resilience from Muzza in the 2nd. Both Soderling and Roddick will earn a lot of free points on their serves but Soderling's groundies are heavier and more powerfully struck. Robin possesses a world-class double handed backhand while Roddick's backhand is perhaps the weakest shot in the Top 15 so that does not bode well for Andy at all. Roddick defends better and neither of the two will be willing to venture the net. It will primarily be the battle from the baseline and I expect Soderling to overpower his opponent in front of the American's home crowd. Soderling 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2.

RickyDimon , 3/20/10 7:48 PM

haha :D thanks man you are great :)

vamosrafa , 3/20/10 8:03 PM

one of the reasons why nadal has such a great record at IW is his unmatched ability to deal with windy conditions ! it is often so windy in IW that players cant find their rhythm.

vamosrafa , 3/20/10 8:23 PM

yeah. he gave murray wind clinic in last year's final.

RickyDimon , 3/20/10 8:35 PM

The master is at work.

Vamos!!!

carrie , 3/20/10 9:01 PM

Off topic, Delpo has pulled out of Miami.

carrie , 3/20/10 9:26 PM

so has Nishikori. KRAJINOVIC got his WC.

RickyDimon , 3/20/10 9:38 PM

oh i see...rafa just gifted that game ..its a boring match to be honest ,due to the windy conditions. i hope its 5-5 instead of 6-4 lju!

vamosrafa , 3/20/10 9:40 PM

I'm gutted!!!!!!!!!!

carrie , 3/20/10 10:46 PM

Cant believe it. Nadal just messed up in the tie break. To me he didnt keep up his aggressive play through out the match and especially in the tie break and that cost him. I really am disappointed...

TopDog , 3/20/10 10:51 PM

middle of the second set to the end of the match were..... :scared:

RickyDimon , 3/20/10 11:01 PM

what the hell was that !! :@ had such high hopes from this tourni :( inexplicable loss on many ways :(

vamosrafa , 3/20/10 11:04 PM

Well so far the ... ummm experts are right on track! (just kidding) ... but Soderling is a set and a break down.

smr , 3/20/10 11:52 PM

Oh no ... I've jinxed AR. One set apiece.

smr , 3/21/10 12:21 AM

Thank goodness for the tournament directors.

smr , 3/21/10 12:59 AM

All experts got it wrong...

torres9 , 3/21/10 2:30 PM

vamosrafa , 3/21/10 4:10 PM

torres9 , 3/21/10 4:42 PM

thnx fellow :D

vamosrafa , 3/21/10 7:26 PM

Oh vamosrafa I forgot to say I thought your posts were well written and very expressive also. Kelli and Ricky, of course, did well in the writing department.
As far as the picks go .... funny thing ... Cheryl was left out of the semi-final choices but it seems she is still in the lead.

smr , 3/21/10 10:38 PM

hahah..yess she is still in the lead !! lol...and thank you :) . btw no predictions have been made for the final by the xperts??!! luks like all experts are sad abt losing the top 4 before the final! lol

vamosrafa , 3/21/10 10:52 PM

even Roddick and Ljubicic know that they arent worthy of having an entire blog devoted to them.

RickyDimon , 3/21/10 11:14 PM

Ricky,

Too funny! :)

Nativenewyorker , 3/22/10 2:35 AM

ooh Ricky-harsh!

deuce , 3/22/10 6:33 PM

Well well,
First half- Fed Vs tsonga and rafa Vs Cilic
Second half- Murray vs soda and Djoker Vs A-rod

A Roger-rafa semi in the offing??

FEDistheGOAT , 3/22/10 7:32 PM

for miami that is.. djoker again gets papa lubo in his side :)

FEDistheGOAT , 3/22/10 7:36 PM

Whoops.. either that or i have rad the draw table all wrong.. i guess it is murray in fed's half and Rafa is in djoker's half.. sorry for the misleading posts..

FEDistheGOAT , 3/22/10 7:39 PM

man why dont we get the prospect of a roger-rafa semi !@ forget the match, even a prospect wud be exciting. and i dont think papa lubo will be able to make a huige impact on this one, after his heroics in IW.

vamosrafa , 3/22/10 8:38 PM

the correct quarters are:

Federer vs. Cilic
Murray vs. Soderling
Roddick vs. Djokovic/Monfils/Querrey
Nadal vs. Tsonga/Isner

RickyDimon , 3/22/10 9:09 PM

my picks considering the above lists

federer vs soderling
nadal vs roddick

final-nadal vs soderling. gota look for early matches coming for these guys, may b they will be upset sooner

vamosrafa , 3/22/10 10:16 PM

@vamosrafa
roddick over djoker on this surface?

FEDistheGOAT , 3/22/10 11:07 PM

Miami is on hard courts. Djokovic would probably lose to Roddick on anything other than clay right now.

RickyDimon , 3/22/10 11:10 PM

vamosrafa I don't think Soderling will beat Federer.

smr , 3/22/10 11:40 PM

@FEDisthe GOAT .. yes this hard court is relatively quick.ROddick will hold the edge if they meet, as ricky poiinted out. bt i said if djo catches his best roddick might be in trble

@smr....fully agree..actually that prediction was based on a feeling rather than plain logic and insight, logic/records say fedex owns robin and he will win again and that is so sensible to say.But in a lot of previous masters federer has been falling to players against whom u wud expect him to roll over normally. Whenever i have been sending federer strait in to the semis/finals i am given a surprise when roggie exits early doors. That is what make me feels robin might win , his abu dhabi success and then words "finally i beat him" mite also help him. BUt i am not doubting roger's quality, if he produces his A game, BYE BYE SODERLING :)

vamosrafa , 3/23/10 12:10 AM

vamosrafa, my picks often reflect my feelings rather than rationale ... maybe even this one. I do like your pick for the other finalist :)

smr , 3/23/10 1:15 AM

I was disappointed to be wrong about Nadal. I was too ill to see the semifinal, but I was told it was kind of a wacky one. :)

Kelli , 3/23/10 8:11 AM

oh, what happened to you kelli?

vamosrafa , 3/23/10 12:37 PM

Problem #1 is a broken leg, vamosrafa. Problem #2 was somehow getting the flu from the meds I have to take to monitor #1. Nice, huh? Lol, it's getting better- thanks for asking. :)

Kelli , 3/23/10 6:21 PM

Kelli ... a broken leg!! Ouch, sorry. Okay we all want to know ... how did it happen?

smr , 3/23/10 11:27 PM

aww that is a pity. yes kelli, we want to know how did it happen?

vamosrafa , 3/24/10 1:59 AM

Thanks a lot for the concern, I really appreciate it. I missed the chance to see IW in person and the resulting cabin fever is a killer!

I was hiking with family and somehow misjudged where I was on top of the levee. I lost my footing and tumbled into the gorge below. Human vs. ground/Mother Earth? You know I'm coming out on the short end of that one.

Healing nicely though, all is well. Except for the itch. ;)

Kelli , 3/24/10 3:36 AM

aww thats sad but the way you present things , there is always that element of fun :)
wish you a speedy recovery :D

vamosrafa , 3/24/10 12:29 PM

Ahhh Kelli ... mother earth takes no prisoners. Tumbling into a gorge is a good story, though. The last time my leg was in a cast, I spent my convalescence discovering the joys of internet Tennis ... always something positive.
Good luck with your mend and get lots of rest.

smr , 3/24/10 12:52 PM

kelli: a very nast shock, I guess. Get better quick!

deuce , 3/24/10 8:19 PM

Lol, thanks very much. Worst part is mental, but I hope to be back in fighting shape for clay season. :)

Kelli , 3/25/10 7:29 PM

Hurt my achilles last year, I then realised how truly AWFUL daytime TV is in the UK!

deuce , 3/25/10 7:48 PM

haha deuce i think that's something most countries have in common...at least those with tvs!

sorry about your fall kelli. as they say "get well soon".

homos , 3/26/10 9:32 AM

Deuce: Daytime TV pretty much anywhere is the pits. I live in France but have FTA English channels as well - there is not a lot to choose between them I can tell you!

But we do get a lot more tennis coverage than in the UK. Only problem is they will focus on matches featuring French players at the expense of a far more important match being played. Dont mind when this is the adorable Gilles Simon (lol) but otherwise it's very frustrating. I often resort to watching a Live Stream (or even two) simultaneously with the TV.
