Ricky "You can blame my slide in the standings on Justine Henin nightmares" Dimon: Federer in 4 (7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2) - Yes, Davydenko has ended his 12-match losing streak to Federer with a bang, earning recent victories in London and Doha. But beating Federer in a Grand Slam is a completely different scenario. Federer has won 15 of these things and Davydenko has never even been to a slam final.
Furthermore, the Davydenko-Verdasco fourth-round encounter was the worst five-set match in the history of the ATP Tour. Even though he won, I'm not sure how the Russian can regain his form after that one. Federer, on the other, looked awesome against Hewitt. Sure, Federer could look awesome against Hewitt in his sleep, but still.... The world No. 1 should win this without much trouble.
Cheryl "If Nadal has knee tendinitis, I have predicting tendinitis" Murray: Federer in 4 (4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4) - Prior to last week, I might have actually picked Davydenko to win this match, but you know...Federer is looking pretty good right now, and Davydenko's last match really wasn't spectacular. I'm afraid that the Russian's Grand Slam curse is going to continue following him.
Frankly, Federer's backhand would have to REALLY go off for Davydenko to even have a shot. I picked in 4 because I'm thinking that Davydenko might sneak out a set in the first or second, but you can expect Federer to handle him the way Federer's ALWAYS handled him in the big moments.
(3) Novak Djokovic vs. (10) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Tsonga leads the head-to-head series 4-2, and all six meetings have been played on hard courts.
Ricky: Tsonga in 5 (6-4, 6-7(4), 4-6, 6-3, 12-10) - If you did not see the Tsonga-Almagro match, don't be fooled by the amazing scoreline. That was not the Nicolas Almagro against whom Tsonga was playing. It had to have been some other Nicolas Almagro. Because the Nicolas Almagro is not capable of what that player produced on Monday. Either way, Tsonga came up big against whichever opponent he was playing.
Djokovic, meanwhile, has been on fire. While it's better to spend few hours on court than a lot of hours, Djokovic has not been tested AT ALL. And i'm not so sure that's a good thing. It's like he is going from the Challenger circuit to a Grand Slam final-esque macth in a span of two days. Furthermore, Tsonga has fared well against Djokovic in the past. As long as The Frenchman stays within striking distance early, I think he can pull off another five-set thriller.
Cheryl: Djokovic in 3 (7-5, 6-4, 6-2) - I don't think Nole is going to have much trouble with Tsonga. Nothing against Nico Almagro, but when a clay-courter takes you to five and you were up two sets to begin with...? That's not promising. Djokovic has been pretty impressive as well. He's playing way better than Tsonga and even though he hasn't so much been in the headlines as much as his other Top 5 colleagues, that doesn't mean he isn't a real contender for the title.
While Djokovic hasn't had to beat any big-name players to reach this stage of the tournament, he's certainly produced some eye-catching tennis at times. His volleying seems to have improved significantly and he's moving exceptionally well. I think he'll edge Tsonga in an exciting four-set encounter.

i still have Djokovic winning it all
I just have him losing this particular match :-)
RickyDimon , 1/26/10 9:02 PM
Ricky, I had disagreed with your full predictions.
But now, I concur with your pick! :D
I also think Djokovic hasn't been tested at all since last week.
Hope Federer will finish off in 3.

RickyDimon , 1/26/10 9:02 PM
hahahaha :D. that makes no sense, but it's very funny
Sib69 , 1/26/10 9:59 PM
that simply means when he doesn't pick Novak, Novak usually wins and the rest is very clear :)
rfzr , 1/26/10 10:33 PM
djokovic v tsonga: djokovic. true, djokovic has not been tested, but he is well rested as well because of that. the only reason he lose at atp finals last year is because unfit.
federer v davydenko: i will pick davydenko for first two sets, the 5-set may be advantage, but when he faced andreev, he had the same problem of previous h2h meetings. now, he face davydenko which he recently has problems. so either davydenko in 3 or federer in 5.
nully , 1/27/10 6:57 AM
Nole playing very well. I hope he gets to the semi to meet Fed there. Will be an interesting contest. I like Nole's chances. How about a Nole/Murray or Nole/Cilic final?
luckystar , 1/27/10 11:14 AM
nole is too defensive
no winners ...
1st set tsonga 7-6
i think nole may loose today, unless he is agressive...
chenna , 1/27/10 12:04 PM
that breathing problem cost novak a set, n now a break down in 5th set.
he needs to win, otherwise i can't put my money on tsonga against federer... sigh..
nully , 1/27/10 2:17 PM
As much as it galls me to admit it, Ricky's Tsonga pick probably qualifies him for the Golden Racquet award. :( Ugh, of all the luck.
cherylmurray , 1/27/10 2:32 PM
repeat after me: "Federer in 4, Tsonga in 5, Federer in 4, Tsonga in 5..."
RickyDimon , 1/27/10 2:39 PM
Ugh. I just knew you would be insufferable. :(
:D
cherylmurray , 1/27/10 2:50 PM
WiHOUT DOUBT!!! ricky now desrvedly holds the golden racket :D clearly the bset of the tournament ! welldone man :D
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 2:53 PM
what happened to djokovic? 2 sets to 1 up and won just 4 games in last 2 sets, Its only januray and he is just 22 ,irrespective of what his problem was today whether he is injured or hurt that was a meek surrender.
I guess we over estimated his form going in to this match, this was his real test as he had not faced any seeded player or dangerous floater in the tournament before. Djokovic has wasted a golden opportunity to add to his collection of majors, he has now won 0 of the last 8 majors and hard to see him adding to it before the US Open.
tennis2010 , 1/27/10 3:07 PM
djo disappointed big time...his favorite court perhaps ...for rafa it was his weakest atleast.
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 3:14 PM
Well for rafa it was his 2nd weakest surface, the hardcourts in Australia suit nadal more than the faster hard courts of US Open, still i dont think this was such a bad event for Nadal, but Djokovic and davydenko were was the form players at the tail-end of 2009.
tennis2010 , 1/27/10 3:19 PM
Australian open and US open are the best opportunities for Djokovic to win a major its not that he lost its also the nature of his defeat.
tennis2010 , 1/27/10 3:26 PM
2 men clearly stand out after today's epic battles, RICKY DIMON and JO WELFIRED TSONGA :) here are the new standings with only two days remaining :
1.Ricky:25 points (thanks to a 'genius' and gutsy forecast blasts his way back to the stop and yells " BRING IT ONNN " !! )
2.Vincent:25 points( arrogantly utters 'not so fast ricky' ,once more anchors his position with the top spot and stands a good chance of winning the competition)
3.Cheryl :24 points ( shy of just ONE point and fighting hard ,still with a good enuf chance to challenge for the top spot, Ms murray may shine together with andy murray :D )
4.Kelli : was injured so could not compete on 3 occasions, however due to her being my favorite ( albeit for no abvious reason LOL) might be assinged an average soon. COmpetitors and spectators please decide whether kelli should be assigned an avergae increment or not? CAUTION : if we do that the result will be hated by SOME competitors LOL so please tell me
*Ricky Dimon finally shattered the strangle hold of kelli demario to grab the prestigious golden racket. KELLI PLEASE MAKE YOUR PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEXT 2 DAYS !!!
VAMOS COMPETITORS !!! 2 moer days to go ,be tough mentally and physically LOL
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 3:58 PM
sorry 3 more days to go
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 4:18 PM
and its Jo-Wilfried, not "JO WELFIRED" :-)
but other than that, another Pulitzer Prize worthy post
RickyDimon , 1/27/10 4:32 PM
haha, congrats Ricky, you picked up your form as the tournament progresses. You'll be lethal in the finals.
rfzr , 1/27/10 5:00 PM
hahaha..sorry about that ,it was a typo. and thank you so much for ur lovely comment ricky i feel really appreciated and good .I love doing this and I hope I can do this more often :) ,our tennis experts rock :P
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 6:15 PM
vamosrafa - i agree. I think we should bring it back for the Masters, starting with Indian Wells.
RickyDimon , 1/27/10 6:20 PM
that is AWESOME ricky ! i already love tennistalk and this thing is just driving me crazy in love with it :D I wud love to do that , and please give suggestions guys abt that kelli scenario ,shall I add the average but if i do it mite be unfair with the other competitors .please suggest ! and RICKY momentum is firmly on your side now but dont become complacent ,focus hard and think wisely LOL good luck :D
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 6:25 PM
vamosrafa--I think your "typo" for Tsonga was apt...
he was "well-fired"-up!!!
rpcv , 1/27/10 6:26 PM
lol..well said :D
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 6:30 PM
we will say the Kelli was eliminated by finishing 4th in the first week of the tournament
after the semifinals, it looks like CHERYL will be eliminated
RickyDimon , 1/27/10 6:40 PM
Murray vs. Cilic is up - http://www.tennistalk.com/en/blog/Ricky_Dimon/20100127/Match_of_the_Da y:_Murray_vs._Cilic_-_Expert_Picks
RickyDimon , 1/27/10 6:41 PM
Okay I will be as kind as possible to Kelli
KELLI DEMARIO was forced to retire from the championships after battling through the first week but a nagging 'torn abdominal muscle' forcefully caused the feisty competitor to haplessly retire ,leaving it to a three-way battle. :( :P
And ricky dont count out CHERYL as yet,if she can pull of a couple of amazing points she can end up with a joint top spot with any of you guys, and remember in case of a tie we will count who scored the most number of EXACT PREDICTIONS,i.e who was rite even in terms of the number of sets predicted :)
CHERYL he is trying to pressure you ! dont panic LOL :P
VAMOS CHERYL !!
vamosrafa , 1/27/10 6:48 PM
lmao...too funny you all. I'll be recuperating here at home with my Golden Racquet. It was an honor to be asked to compete.
Enjoy the rest of the tennis and good luck to my colleagues! :)
(In my defense, I had some major work to do behind the scenes vamosrafa. Will be revealed at a later date. Your support was awesome though, ty very much. xoxo)
Kelli , 1/28/10 1:38 AM
LOL..my pleasure kelli and it was great to have you in the competition,i think u had a strong chance to win but please make sure you join in the fun next time to the fullest :D . and the 'cruel' Ricky Dimon also snatched the golden racket from you yesterday so i think you had a tournament analogous to nadal ,falling in the qtrs (and injured LOL).
okay now that you are done , make a prediction regarding who will win the competition on TT:)
vamosrafa , 1/28/10 11:37 AM
Hello Ricky and Cheryl,
I see that I beat both of you at the bracket challenge in tourneytopia. So whats my reward? :D
orion , 1/28/10 3:36 PM
A comparison to Nadal? Okay then, I'll take it. :D
Picking a TT winner? Wow, that's tough....let's break things down.
1) Ricky- Nobody has a greater sense of the likely outcome of a match-up than Ricky, imo. I've put down bets before *cough*, and he's been the one I've asked to help me pick a winner consistently. He has a complete knowledge and sense of the game- very, very few are at that level. Choosing Ricky for the title is as risky as picking Fed in a Slam.
2) Vincent- Vincent is the most recent addition to the TT family, so I haven't seen much of his work prior to this tournament. He was leading though, and that's very impressive. He seems to have a good idea about match results- he has a decent shot to win also.
3) Cheryl- She's the pride and joy of this whole operation.... As I had mentioned before, she picked Nadal to win Wimbledon like, a year before he did it. She was the one who said that Del Potro would beat Federer in NY- something I almost laughed at, considering what went on in Melbourne just half a season earlier. Cheryl has this gift for tennis- a comprehensive understanding that transcends the technical aspects of the game. She's part strategist, part technician, part psychologist....
I haven't had my espresso yet- let me mull this over a wee bit more.
Kelli , 1/28/10 7:58 PM
LOL ..such an interesting post kelli ,loved it,fine take your time and make a final prediction :D .I am not sure but i think it will be a tie between ricky and vincent and ricky mite end of winning the competition.

Haha Ricky, I thought you were predicting that Djokovic would win the whole thing! What has he done that led to this loss of faith? :)
