World Tour Finals? No. 2 vs. No. 9 in the world? A rematch of the biggest upset of 2009 and one of the biggest upsets in tennis history? During work hours for people in both the U.S. and Europe? Yep, sounds like this one calls for a live blog!
Follow along and join the discussion before, during, and after the showdown between Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling. The rematch of their French Open clash will kick off approximately 2:00 PM London time, 9:00 AM Eastern.
Robin Soderling defeats Rafael Nadal 6-4, 6-4: Soderling, constantly running Nadal all over the court, converts his second match point to beat Nadal in straight sets. Just 18 winners and 24 unforced errors for Nadal, who was generally outplayed throughout the match.
Soderling 6-4, 5-4: Two routine holds and Soderling is one game away from victory. Nadal will once again serve at 4-5 in order to stay in the set. It did not work out well for him last time.
Soderling 6-4, 4-3: Nadal holds at love, Soderling holds to 30; struggled more on his serve than Nadal did, but nowhere near the Swede's previous service effort. Both are playing relatively well now, but Nadal making too many errors. He has to keep his errors to a minimum sice he is not winning a lot of points with winners.
Soderling 6-4, 3-2: Soderling breaks when Nadal, after saving two break points to reach 30-40, hits what is called a winner. Again, however, the challenge system is cruel to Nadal and it is showed long. Soderling then survives a 12-minute service game to hold for a 3-2 advantage. Nadal in serious trouble as Soderling is winning all of the big points.
Soderling 6-4, 1-2: Nadal holds easily and then breaks to regain control of the match. Soderling double-faulted twice and also failed to put in a first serve on break point. Nadal is playing well, but Soderling is letting him back in the match. If the Swede makes first serves, he should win this match. It's that simple, but it's also a lot easier said than done.
Soderling 6-4, 1-0: Soderling holds easily. Major trouble now for Nadal. He has to keep holding; since he is serving second again in this set, he will have the pressure of playing from behind.
Robin Soderling wins the first set 6-4: A bizarre end to the first set. Nadal goes up 30-0, eventually goes up 40-30, then hits what turned out to be an ace for 5-5. The ball is called out, however, and Nadal declines to challenge (replay showed it was in). Soderling won the point with a winner and two Nadal errors later, the set was over.
Soderling 5-4: Nadal comes back from 0-30 down at 3-4 for a clutch service hold. Making first serves has been and will continue to be critical for the world No. 2. He can't let Soderling dictate rallies by getting looks at second ones. Soderling holds at love; he, too, has picked up his level since getting broken at 3-1.... Tiebreaker?
Soderling 4-3: Routine holds for both players. After Soderling won 12 of the first 14 points, Nadal won 12 of the next 15. Soderling, however, gets back on track with an easy service game at 3-3. Key for both men, even Nadal, is to play aggressive, and both are doing it right now.
Soderling 3-2: Nadal is back in the match. He is working his backhand slice to Soderling's backhand over and over again. Soderling cannot afford to keep playing long rallies; Nadal is winning all of them, whereas Soderling is winning points whenever he goes for his shots right away. Could be great match.
Soderling 3-0: Ideal start for Soderling, who is in dominant form. He has lost only two points in the first three games. That's 12-2 in points for those counting. For now, Nadal looks like he has no answer for Soderling on a hard court (this is their first hard-court meeting).
Soderling 1-0: Routine service hold, to 15, for Soderling. He is, of course, trying to keep points as short as possible and going for big shots. Nadal's second-serve return was poor that game.
Carlos Bernardes is in the chair for this one. Good choice. You can bet het won't be tolerating any imitation nonsense from Soderling. Nadal wins the coin toss and elects to receive.
---------------
Pre-match analysis: Although a significant underdog on paper, Soderling should have a few advantages heading into this one. He has nothing to lose as the last "seed" in London, he beat Nadal the last time they played each other, and he is at his best on indoor hard courts whereas Nadal obviously prefers clay.
With nothing--figuratively--to lose, Soderling needs to go for his shots like Verdasco did in the first two sets against Federer on Sunday. The 25-year-old Swede has the power to blast Nadal right off a hard court, and if he is connecting with his forehand, he could do just that on Monday.
Judging from the two completed matches, however, the surface is playing slow and it is difficult to hit through it. Furthermore, the balls are bouncing low; while Nadal hits a heavy topspin forehand, his low backhand slice could give Soderling trouble. Soderling does not move well and generally despises hitting balls below waist level.
Prediction: Nadal in 3 sets.
Head-to-head history: Nadal 3-1
2006 French Open first round: Nadal 6-2, 7-5, 6-1 - Probably the least interesting of their four meeting. Of course, it became more interesting in retrospect, as three years later Nadal STILL had never lost a match at Roland Garros.... Until he ran into Soderling again.
2007 Wimbledon third round: Nadal 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(7), 4-6, 7-5 - Nothing suggests that Nadal and Soderling were friendly to begin with, but this is where the heated rivalry (if you can call it that after four matches) was born. Soderling tried to get into his opponent's head by mocking Nadal's butt-picking, but it was to no avail.
2009 Rome third round: Nadal 6-1, 6-0 - It was a beatdown of the highest order, but it was not a sign of things to come.
2009 French Open fourth round: Soderling 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-6(2) - Previously thought of as an indoor-court specialist, Soderling scored one of the biggest surprised of all-time by handing Nadal a clay-court loss; Nadal's first ever at the French Open. Soderling, of course, ended up going all the way to the final.

I'm far too nervous to contemplate this match. In fact so nervous it will be all I can do to watch it.

alik , 11/23/09 1:11 PM
7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
And yes, Söderling will win!!!
Maglor , 11/23/09 1:35 PM
I don't want this...but I am afraid it will be Sod in 2...6:3, 6:4...
Don't jump on me Rafans...I hope am shure that Rafa will find way with new body weight and style...but there wasn't enough time.
zare , 11/23/09 2:12 PM
I'll go with Nadal: 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-4
Don't think Sod can keep it together in the tight moments.
Bonker , 11/23/09 2:18 PM
rafa
7-6 6-4
phoenix: if you are correct, i'll send you a souvenir myself!!
homos , 11/23/09 3:10 PM
vrael: poor henry, it was really the referee and linemen's fault :P
homos , 11/23/09 3:15 PM
weird. rafa had just finished talking to mark petchey when my rafa nadal calendar arrived through my front door :D
Sib69 , 11/23/09 3:21 PM
homos - i agree with you it wasnt henry's fault,it was more of a blunder from the referee........besides i love henry and i love arsenal(which henry was a part of)
vamos rafa......vamos wenger :)
vrael , 11/23/09 4:37 PM
Henry even called for a replay of the match. He is the good guy in all this.
Speaking of replays, Nadal is getting killed by them.
RickyDimon , 11/23/09 4:46 PM
ok well...tbh, henry knew he shouldn't have touched the ball. he's not the goalkeeper. he did it subtly to keep it from going out. so while i still say the referee and linesmen to blame, henry is not that innocent. he knew there wouldn't be a reply. why not admit to the referee on the spot? :)
homos , 11/23/09 4:57 PM
game set and match, Soderling
RickyDimon , 11/23/09 5:12 PM
i could only see the second set and i was pleased to see rafa all fired up in this match....all those fistpumps......."VAMOS'S".....MADE ME FEEL GOOD but alas rafa cudnt hold his serve.....soderling just played better, better at the bigger points....
hope rafa gets better in the other matches he has got left against kolya and nole!!
vrael , 11/23/09 5:22 PM
Ooooh, Rafa. :( :( To lose to Bobby Sod again, and in straights?
Didn't watch a lot of it, only most of second set, but I think Sod was getting all the big points and Rafa was struggling a little with his serve in general...but sigh. I was hoping for Rafa to exact revenge and to be honest didn't think he would lose. Sod ain't exactly superb under pressure.
Hope Rafa will play better against Koyla and Nole...really want to see him in the semis, at least.
jyannis , 11/23/09 5:29 PM
your prediction is only 1/3 right so far.
It doesnt take a genius to pick Soderling over Nadal in straight sets on a hard court. Plenty of people had the same pick.

attacker's post deleted, as it was already posted in a different article. You can find it in the Nadal-Soderling match preview.

Unfortunatelly my prediction was right and the closest, I should get the promissed souvenir from the World Tour Finals of Cheryl. Still there is a chance for Rafa to adjust to the new conditions of his body and balance and to come back in 2010 at his best, at least I hope and wish so, he is a fighter, but not on this tour. Sorry Rafa fans...
zare , 11/23/09 6:20 PM
I think alik should get a prize for predicting Nadal would win "6-4, 6-4, 7-6."
RickyDimon , 11/23/09 6:21 PM
i still blame the long sleeves
grafight , 11/23/09 7:06 PM
grafight , 11/23/09 7:06 PM I second that.
ed251137 , 11/23/09 7:27 PM
what are the long sleeves?
RickyDimon , 11/24/09 6:55 AM
I was at the O2 yesterday, the match was close. Rafa made errors at the wrong time, which cost him dearly. Soderling served well and played very well, and I would say was the better player yesterday, but Rafa could still have pulled it off.
IMO, Rafa is still not mentally sharp, some of the emotional turmoil he has had to cope with this year have been overwhelming. He needs to grow up - I thought I would share with you something he said in the tournament brochure, which featured the 8 players talking about themselves:
"Being home alone at night makes me a bit nervous," he says in a rare moment of vulnerability. "I have to sleep on the sofa. I'm there with the TV on and all the lights on. I'm not very brave about anything in life. In tennis, yes I'm brave. In everything else, not so."
I'd be willing to go and keep him company anytime he feels nervous, Rafa you know where I am. Still, I hope he pulls something out of the bag in his next two matches!!
Vamos Rafa!
carrie , 11/24/09 9:48 AM
ricky, i think they mean short sleeves, which evolved from sleeveless. i haven't seem long sleeve live in my time :)
homos , 11/24/09 9:58 AM
Ricky, do you know why Rafa slices the ball so much, there were times when he should have had a forehand winner or backhand cross court, when he simply sliced it time and time again, an easy target for Soderling to do what he wanted with it.
carrie , 11/24/09 11:28 AM
RD"I think alik should get a prize for predicting Nadal would win 6/4,6/4,7/6..posted..11/23/6;21pm"
I don't understand Ricky, are you being sacrastic or something because if you are I'm not ammused.I am quite sure that I'm not the only person who perdicted that rafa would win.
Are you just saying that i was the only one that can close to the losing score..either way..still poor taste.
alik , 11/24/09 12:17 PM
Hey, alik, don't get upset! It is just that you predicted win in THREE sets..This is not a grand slam :)) I would assume it was just a typo, but still funny though...
natashao , 11/24/09 12:42 PM
Thanks for explaining natashao(xo)
Yes it was a Typo.I'm sorry, I'm a little touchy this morning..I guest some people never make typing errors.
alik , 11/24/09 1:11 PM
natashao - thanks
carrie - slice was the right play. Soderling doesnt like hitting against slice; everything else Rafa hit, Soderling was teeing off on. Until Nadal is back to 100 percent again and hitting winners, he's going to have to play defense with slice against the taller players against whom his heavy topspin has little effect.
RickyDimon , 11/24/09 2:11 PM
Thanks Ricky, you can see how much I know about the mechanics of tennis.
carrie , 11/24/09 2:43 PM
no posts for roger and juan?
Noody , 11/26/09 7:58 PM
Noody - it deserves a live blog, but too much else going on for Thanksgiving! I'll be watching it though.
Definitely will live blog the final, and maybe the semis, but right now the semis dont look like they will be amazing matchups.
