  • Approach shots: Nadal goes for five straight at French Open

    2009-05-23 20:32:25
"Approach Shots" is Ricky's weekly look at what's ahead (or "approaching") on the ATP Tour. Every Sunday he'll preview all the tournaments scheduled for the upcoming week. This is the fourth of Ricky's five-part French Open preview series, running through Sunday.

    Part 1: Nadal vs. Federer
Part 2: Top 25 contenders at the 2009 French Open
    Part 3: Draw analysis
    Part 4: Weekly "Approach Shots"
    Part 5: Full tournament predictions

    French Open

    Where: Paris, France
    Surface: Clay
    Prize Money: 5,590,800 Euros
    Points: 2000
    Top Seed: Rafael Nadal
    Defending Champion: Rafael Nadal

    First-Round Upset Alerts

Marcos Daniel over (1) Rafael Nadal – Since this is three out of five instead of two out of three, there is a good chance Daniel will manage to defeat Nadal in one game; maybe even a few.

Leyton Hewitt over (26) Ivo Karlovic – Karlovic is slumping and even though Hewitt hasn't been much better, clay gives him a real shot at what would only be an upset on paper.

Gaston Gaudio over (18) Radek Stepanek – Stepanek should win this, but he has cooled off and Gaudio knows all about producing magic at Roland Garros.

Fabio Fognini over (25) Igor Andreev – Fognini loves clay, already came through qualifying, and Andreev has been dealing with an abdominal strain.

Arnaud Clement over (21) Dmitry Tursunov – Tursunov said that he was pulling out due to injury, but apparently he lied. He might not make it through this match.

Marc Gicquel over (27) Rainer Schuettler – Schuettler has been in terrible form and is only seeded as a result of a shock semifinal appearance at Wimbledon last year.

Bobby Reynolds over (11) Gael Monfils – Monfils did not go as far as Tursunov, but he did say he would most likely withdraw. If he takes the court, he probably won't be able to finish the match due to knee tendinitis.

Simone Bolelli over (19) Thomas Berdych – Berdych can go in the tank at any moment, and he's even more likely to do it against Bolelli, a solid clay-court player.

Notable Momentum Builders (Players looking to continue recent good form)

Rafael Nadal – Won the Australian Open, the Masters Series Indian Wells, and two clay-court Masters events.

Novak Djokovic – Finished runner-up to Nadal twice on clay, won the title in Belgrade, and had three match points against Nadal in the Madrid semifinals.

Andy Murray – Cooled off only slightly on clay, and he did enough during the hard-court swing (highlight was the Masters Series Miami title) to take over the No. 3 spot in the world rankings.

Juan Martin Del Potro – Huge wins over Nadal in Miami and Murray in Madrid should have Del Potro poised to make a third straight Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Andy Roddick – Looks like a new player under coach Larry Stefanki, and—shockingly—that might even be the case on clay, as well (took a set off Federer in Madrid).

Fernando Verdasco – Has reached at least the quarterfinals in every single event he has entered this season, and his Aussie Open semifinal showdown against Nadal could go down as the best match of the year.

Fernando Gonzalez – Sat out the previous two weeks citing an ankle injury, but Gonzo most likely just wanted some rest of winning so many matches.

Stanislas Wawrinka – Proving his win over Federer in Rome was no fluke with consistently solid results week in and week out. Clay gives him his best chance of Grand Slam success.

Juan Monaco – Probably everybody's favorite unseeded darling heading into the French Open; and for good reason. He has been a force on clay.

Ivan Ljubicic – Almost out of nowhere, the veteran Croat has made it to the quarterfinals of three Masters Series tournaments this year, including two on clay.

Notable Slump Busters (Players hoping to resurrect their games)

Gilles Simon – Still hasn't recovered from losing two crucial Davis singles rubbers to the Czech Republic. By pre-2008 Simon standards, however, he is doing OK.

Gael Monfils – Not slumping, just hasn't been playing. With tendinitis in both knees, he might not even take the court.

Marat Safin – Can't win any matches in which he gets behind. Can't win any matches in which he gets ahead…even by a set and a double-break. It's going to be a long last season on tour.

Dmitry Tursunov – Has been sidelined due to injury and said he was going to pull out of the French. There's still time for him to do it.

Rainer Schuettler – Got double-bageled by Robin Soderling at the World Tennis Championships this week. Enough said.

Nicolas Almagro – Used to be the player everyone wanted to avoid in clay-court tournaments, but this year he is even bad on clay (aside from a title in Acapulco).

Ernests Gulbis – Struggling to win any matches of any kind. Once thought to be on a meteoric rise, Gulbis will most likely fall to around No. 90 in the world if (when) he loses early in Paris.

Thomaz Bellucci – Last year's clay-court sensation is enduring a massive "sophomore slump."

Marcos Baghdatis – Fallen off the map due to injuries and lack of fitness. Clay courts and a first-round date with Monaco won't help Baghdatis emerge from his slump anytime soon.

Tommy Haas – Both hurt and not playing well, but he had two match points against Roddick in the Madrid first round.

vrael , 5/23/09 8:47 PM

Odesnik-Simon and Benneteau-Tsonga could be upsets too. Very nice blog, still laughing about the nadal joke lol

orion , 5/23/09 9:03 PM

Me too orion--LOL

fan4tennis , 5/23/09 9:11 PM

yep, mentioned Simon-Odesnik as one to watch in the draw analysis

Benneteau has a minor chance. I did not like the way he looked at the end of today's match, though. Maybe if they let him rest until Tuesday or Wednesday he MIGHT have a chance.

RickyDimon , 5/23/09 9:40 PM

Vamos Rafa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rafans, here is a video to warm your hearts until Rafa takes to the courts at RG.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV7P5uBAmic&am...p;feature=playe r_embedded

VAMOS RAFA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

carrie , 5/23/09 10:09 PM

Gulbis-Querrey will break my heart. Why do all the nice ones have to play each other first round? So unfair... Love the Swiss Bloke and all, but I'm not too keen on the idea of him making the final. I still want a Rafa-Nole final. ;-)

I also think Odesnik could take out Simon. He did quite well last year. I hope Ljubicic comes away with a decent result. I've always liked his game (and anyone who annoyed Murray like he did in IW is cool in my books lol).

BTW, hilarious joke about the Daniel-Nadal match. I didn't know you had such a great sense of humour, Ricky. I'm thinking...1, 1, and 1. Sound good?

tennisdeva , 5/23/09 10:38 PM

tennisdeva - Hmmm, Daniel would have to be an extraordinarily big fan of breadsticks in order to come up with a result like that.

I'm thinking more like 1, 0, and 2

RickyDimon , 5/23/09 10:54 PM

Ricky - LOL Daniel would just have to be a fan of bread in general. Hmmm...why does that scoreline look familiar? I know! That's the same score Nando managed against Rafa last year in the R16. Ha! I'm not rusty in statistics hehe. Almagro got the breadsticks in the QF.

I'm so good *does a little dance*

tennisdeva , 5/23/09 11:10 PM

C'mon , Daniel is not that bad on clay. He actually beat Canas and Ljubicic before losing to seppi in Belgrad. also won a challanger on clay 2 weeks ago.

Shockwaves , 5/23/09 11:14 PM

I never said he was bad on clay, Shockwaves. But Rafa takes even good clay court players and eats them for breakfast. Plus, it was just a running joke. That's all. ;-)

tennisdeva , 5/23/09 11:29 PM

i genuinely panicked about the rafa thing at the start... til i realised it was a joke, haha

vamos rafa!!

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/may/24/rafael-nadal-french-open-i nterview

For Rafa fans, this is a great article! This guy seems to understand the "essence of Rafa" for lack of a better word--lol.

fan4tennis , 5/24/09 5:26 AM

If Tipsarevic survives Montanes (in five sets I think), he will go over Lopez and he may as well surprise Murray in the third round. Serbia's result in Dusseldorf should boost him nicely.

HogarTheHorrible , 5/24/09 10:22 AM

Would anyone actually be surprised if Tipsy beats Murray?! I know I wouldn't.

danica , 5/26/09 1:07 AM

Murray might be tough. I didn't see his match but all the reports say he played a great first match.

fan4tennis , 5/26/09 1:53 AM

Yeah I'd be stunned. Nice work beating Monty, though.

RickyDimon , 5/26/09 2:09 AM

Agree with you about Gulbis, Ricky. He is exiting early in many tournaments. I think he'll drop in the ranking and will not see his potential to be a real force in the game as first thought. Do you think it's a mental issue, Ricky, or confidence?

homos , 5/26/09 3:07 AM

I couldn't watch Murray - Chela match, but friend o mine told me that Chela sort of "stopped running" after first 4 - 5 games (tired or something). Is it true?

HogarTheHorrible , 5/26/09 7:11 AM

homos - It's mental (which goes hand in hand with confidence). And he doesn't have a coach right now. He has a whole lot of issues.

Talent-wise there is no reason why he should not be Top 15 RIGHT NOW - right there with Cilic or even better. Unfortunately, this year is going to be pretty much a wash. After the French he wont be able to get in any tournaments other than the Grand Slams.

Basically barring some kind of miracle run at the French, Wimbledon, or the U.S., Gulbis will just have to go back to the Challengers, get some confidence, and regroup for 2010 with a new coach and pretend 2009 never happened. He will probably start 2010 right around 100th in the world and should make it his goal to get well inside the Top 50 by the end of the year. At that point he would be on a similar age/progress curve with Bolelli...not good enough for Gulbis, but considering where he is at now, that would be a decent start.

RickyDimon , 5/26/09 3:02 PM

Thanks Ricky. That makes sense yes - mental and confidence. What happened to coach?? I didn't know he has no coach now. Yikes. He needs one. Maybe a sports psychologist as well. Looks like he needs all the help he can afford :) Definitely forgetting about 2009 is a good idea. A bit of a shocker for someone of his potential.

homos , 5/26/09 4:53 PM

Thanks F4T for the article on The Guardian, very nice XD

Shireling , 5/26/09 5:14 PM

Parted ways in March after Gulbis got absolutely destroyed in like four straight matches.

Pilic is with him at the French, but not for anything more than that.

RickyDimon , 5/26/09 5:52 PM

Who do you guys pick for women's title? My guess is Safina

orion , 5/26/09 6:58 PM

Not Serena, thats for sure after today's performance.

Probably Sharapova.

RickyDimon , 5/26/09 7:57 PM

Sharapova for the title? Enough sarcasm, who is your real pick lol

THIS SHUD WORK

vrael , 5/26/09 8:08 PM

Ricky , did you hear that Nadal may have sustained an injury (left knee) during yesterday's match? Sorry I asked this twice.

smr , 5/26/09 8:43 PM

Yes. It's the same "problem" he had the last four times he won the French Open easily.

RickyDimon , 5/26/09 9:19 PM

Thanks Ricky hee hee ... I don't remember this from last year, but he didn't play all that well during his first match in 08.

smr , 5/26/09 10:04 PM

has nadal genuinely got an injury? someone on a different site said he did, but i can't find anything when i attempted to google it

i guess we'll see in his match tomorrow

Sib69 , 5/26/09 11:06 PM

Apparently, Toni said Rafa had some pain in his LEFT knee (not the same one that caused him to withdraw last year at Madrid) that was aggravated in the 2nd set but Toni and Dr. Cotorro both told French newspapers that it is nothing to worry about.

fan4tennis , 5/27/09 12:13 AM

Hey Ricky,
Getting cheecky with the quotation marks when you write Nadal has a 'problem' in his knee? :)
If his knee doesn't feel 100 & during a match, is he not allowed to mention it to his trainer?

Shireling , 5/27/09 12:10 PM

Shireling....for all the comments on rafa's knees etc....he has one of the best teams in the world around him...who will no doubt manage his injuries...all players will have them and it is how they are managed that counts.....as you know........

Alllleeeezzzzzzzzzz roger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

malteser1 , 5/27/09 1:00 PM

Yes he does malty! If his doctors and team are saying it is nothing to worry about, then I won't either.

fan4tennis , 5/27/09 7:25 PM

Are we still going on about Rafa's knees.............The King Of Clay has just broken another record.......30 matches at RG unbeaten, so there is nothing wrong with his knees is there?

carrie , 5/27/09 7:58 PM

no carrie there isn't....thanks for informing us....the uninformed.......

**claps for carrie****

malteser1 , 5/27/09 11:43 PM

Right you are malteser, these guys are treated like racing horses.. every little discomfort is promptly cared for..
I was just saying that they're allowed to say 'this and that hurts' (it goes for everybody, not just Nadal)

Shireling , 5/28/09 9:45 AM
