Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo had a day off today. Perhaps, the 30-year old spent some time reflecting on everything that he has experienced over the past seven days. It has been quite a ride in the world of tennis for the seasoned Spaniard. A week ago from today, Ramirez-Hidalgo was on center stage at Monte Carlo Country Club against the best athlete in the world. Ramirez-Hidalgo had qualified into the main draw and defeated Gilles Simon in the first round.
Against Federer, he was up 5-1 in the third set and appeared to be the likely winner. Especially at 30-15 when he just had to put the ball into the court as Federer slipped and fell down on the clay. This was to become the turning point in a match that had all the spectators at MCCC gasping at what was taking place in front of them. They were to calm down when Federer finished the match off winning the third set tiebreak in a very decisive fashion.
The Swiss maestro then went on to reach a third consecutive final in Monte Carlo losing to the same player as always, Rafael Nadal. For Ramirez-Hidalgo, life went on in a different way. On the day after his loss, he boarded an airplane to Barcelona, where he was to qualify for the ATP event taking place in the beautiful city by the Mediterranean Sea. Three days after the loss, it was time for another match for the 30-year old. The venue was replaced from Monte Carlo Country Club to Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, and the opponent was now ranked 340 spots below Federer and a 21-year old countryman with the name Guillermo Alcaide.
However, the result was almost identical. This time around, Ramirez-Hidalgo was on the winning side but not until a decisive tiebreak had to be played. The player who is constantly pulling up his right sleeve then went on to only win five games against Max Mirnyi on the following day. As a lucky loser entrant, he was given the chance to take part in the main draw, but was defeated by Denis Gremelmayr. It was the end of an eleven day stretch that had seen him play seven matches, of which he had won four, against players ranked 315, 75, 33, 1, 341, 263, 85.
