Donald Young got a main draw Wild Card to the Masters Series event in Miami as a 15-year old in 2005 and a year later in 2006. At that time, Young was miles away from being ready for a tournament of that level. Despite being granted two excellent first round draws, Young lost 6-4, 7-5 to Jean-Rene Lisnard in 05 and suffered the complete humiliation to Carlos Berlocq in 06, not winning a single game.
Two years later things are completely different. Young has strung together several good results over the past year and is now ranked inside the Top 100. The young American just missed out on a direct entry to the Main Draw, but after a third round showing at Indian Wells a Wild Card to Miami should be a near certainty. Yes, in a world without tournaments run by sports marketing and management companies such as IMG.
Donald Young used to be their brightest prospect and he was given Wild Cards to tournaments every other week. At the end of last year, Young ended his collaboration with IMG. As a result, he is no longer welcomed with open arms at Key Biscayne. And ironically, this is the first time he really would have deserved a Wild Card. Sometimes, the power of sports marketing companies becomes a little bit too apparent.
