If you have ever watched Teimuraz Gabashvili play, you will most likely not have forgotten about it. The Georgian-born Russian has a unique style on the court, continuously shaking his head between points and often looks like his mind is somewhere else. Some players don’t like his court antics and have gone as far as calling him an idiot. However, to his credit, he is a very good fighter and has gutted out some very good wins recently. Has the oddly looking figure with the oddly sounding name finally got his breakthrough after reaching the quarterfinals in two consecutive ATP level tournaments (Rotterdam and Zagreb)?
What is notable about Gabashvili is that he has been stranded on the same level for the past few years, qualifying into a huge number of tournaments but never seeming to be able to beat the higher ranked players. His ranking has constantly been somewhere between 70 and 140 since November 2005, which is a very long time to be stranded in that region.
Most players either move up or fall down after a while, but Gabashvili has remained on this “right in between ATP and Challenger”-level for the past 28 months. He has had a great record in qualifying into ATP events, managing the feat three times during 2006 and a whopping eight times during 2007. However, he was a first round loser in all three attempts in 2006 and in five out of eight in 2007. It will be very interesting to see where his season goes from here. With a current ranking of 112, does he have what it takes to move on and become a regular ATP entrant or will he continue to be the qualifying-king who once in a while wins a match on the main level?
